Knowing
(2009)

A film of two parts
I could have gave this film a better score but for the ending. It looks like it should have been on another film. This film in abundance had great effects, a great story and some good acting. With a blend of semi decent sci-fi and suspense its a good movie to watch and worth the admission money. Plenty of jumps and shocks but marred by the last 10 minutes but its still worth watching for the rest of the movie though. There's not many around at the minute but this is a decent Nicholas Cage film, unlike some of his more recent fares ie. National Treasure 2 and the Wicker Man. More importantly he seems to be getting to grips with his hair weave at last.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
(2008)

a must see
I've just watched this film and I dare anyone to say they didn't have a lump in their throat at the end. It is both beautiful and moving a real cinematic experience. The film starts off feeling a bit like a cross between Forest Gump and Big Fish but then moves into a class of its own. The only thing spoiling the film is the length, at nearly 3 hours it might drain your resolve but watch the end and you'll be duly rewarded. This definitely Oscar material. If it doesn't win something, even best makeup or visual effects you should feel robbed. Compared to some previous films that have done well this is well above the rest. I would have gave 10 out of 10 but the length spoils it.

Cheung gong 7 hou

CJ7 rules!!!!
At first glance this movie looked as though it was going to be another cheap and nasty effort from the Asian market. Boy was I wrong. After reading numerous different reviews on various sites I decided to watch the English dubbed version. There's not many movies on the scene to recently that will appeal to both kids and adults like this. After watching it myself I let the kids watch it and they were absolutely spellbound for ninety odd minutes. You got the whole thing in that short space of time slapstick martial arts action, humour and real tear jerking moments. Expect to go through every emotion because this is truly great. Enjoy it before the Americans remake it and destroy the beauty of it!

Mutant Chronicles
(2008)

Did I watch something else?
Did I watch something else? Having just watched this I couldn't help defend it. OK some of the effects look strange, sort of 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'-esquire, but it was gripping non the less. One unusual effect which may not be to everyones taste is the almost monochrome look to the film against the vivid red of the blood, which there is a lot of, and the orange of the fire. Some people complained of the cast and the story line..... GET A GRIP ITS SCIFI. The effects are no worse than Chronicles of Riddick which had a vastly bigger budget and it also had a better storyline. It also proves that its not only the Americans can make epic films. My only gripe is the lack of background storyline except for some incoherent babbling from Ron Perlmann hence the 7 out of 10. If you like purist SF you'll like this.

À l'intérieur
(2007)

A must see movie
If you liked the Saw and Hostel series of films you'll love this. This film really pushes the boundaries of gore to new extents. I guarantee you'll watch it thinking, or even saying to yourself, my god how much more gross can they get. Once again the French have made a film that is both disgusting and compelling to watch proving Frontier(s) wasn't a flash in the pan. The lighting and direction are first class. The blood is supplied by the bucket-full and the suspense ladled on with a trowel. I'd recommend it to everyone who likes gore. Even with subtitles its brilliant. Rumour is that these people are being lined up to make the next Halloween film. I cant wait.

The Forbidden Kingdom
(2008)

At last!!!
After the recent Jackie Chan Hollywood movies he releases this. Watch New Police Story and he looks old and in Rush Hour 3 he looks tired. Yet in this he looks great proving the point its not the man its the story. The action is fast, the choreography is beautiful and the cinematography is brilliant. All this is interspaced with humour a great story line and a tinge of romance. This is Jackie Chan back to his best and it also has some bloke in called Jet Li. The fight scenes are fast and furious but also beautiful. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes martial arts movies but is sick of the 'arty' films like Crouching Tiger and the 'dung fu' movies of Segal etc. The only problem I had is the version I got had no English subs. Before anyone says it I know Segal doesn't do kung fu but his films are still crap.

Ashes to Ashes
(2008)

not a sequel more a rewrite
People will always compare a sequel to its predecessor, sometimes rightly so, but this time they would be wrong. Life on Mars was new and unique. The story of policeman trapped in his own imagination that kept you guessing until the end as to whether this world was real or not. This is a similar idea with a twist. At the start Drake comes across as arrogant and very self assured of her policing and psychological skills but as the series progresses you can see the cracks appearing. Ashes to Ashes isn't so much a sequel as more a clever rewrite. I recommend people ignore the hype and hysteria of the media and judge for yourself.

Beowulf
(2007)

Am I the only one?
Am I the only person who thinks that this movie is a pile of pretentious waffle. Yeah it looks spectacular. The animation and effects are second to none, maybe the Final Fantasy series, but it lacks in so many places. The story line is wrong for a start and there is too many plodding moments when you sit wishing for something good to happen. You watch it thinking, is this part of a trilogy and thats why they are building the story so much, but it ain't no part one of three. I know people will say its beautiful and critics will say its groundbreaking but this time next year something will replace it your memory unlike the Wizard of OZ etc that will always be classics.

P2

Why?
Why does everyone think they are a film critic? Why cant people just sit down and watch a movie without pulling it to shreds. Yeah it had faults. Like why not set the fire-alarm off straight away but then you would have had a very short dull movie. Instead you get a nicely paced film with just the right amount of gore and obligatory cleavage to keep most people satisfied. It ain't Oscar material, but who wants to watch pretentious films about gay cowboys and be too ashamed to say it was sh*t! Kick off your shoes, sit back and watch it without any pre-thought ideas of what to expect and it is highly enjoyable no brain fodder.

Hot Rod
(2007)

hot or not rod?
Seen an 'imported' copy of Hot Rod and had a permanent grin on my face. I've watched it twice now and I still don't know if I think it is brilliantly funny or stupidly childish. I don't want to give the story away but the dancing scene outside the van was brilliant and the soundtrack is worth the watching alone. I watched Napoleon Dynamite, which this has been compared to and this is in a different league, where else do you see Lovejoy really ham it up. If you like Will Ferrel movies you'll love this but don't expect laugh out humour all the way through as I said it is childish sometimes but maybe thats why it's so enjoyable.
