Gakkô-gurashi!
(2015)

"...So if something sad happens, it's okay to feel sad." - Takeya Yuki
When I'm writing a review, I try to avoid spoilers at all costs, but in this show's case, that's impossible. However, I really want to write one about it; how can't I, when it made a bit emotionless guy, like me cry like a baby.

Here is the story in a nutshell (imagine enormous spoiler tags here): the 4 main characters of the show: Takeya Yuki, Ebisuzawa Kurumi, Naoki Miki and Wakasa Yuuri. What's the similarity between these completely different girls? They are in the School Living Club! A club, that envolves around staying at school 24/7 and doing fun stuff like sports festival or going on an adventure in the middle of the night! Well, that's what Yuki believes, as she tries to hide from the harsh reality: they are in the middle of a zombie apocalipse, and they are the only survivors in the entire town, stuck in the school building and waiting for help.

The first of many shocks literally comes at the end of the first episode: the realisation of the depressing situation of the girls, it just really hits hard. Of course, the anime could have easily run out of fuel already and all, but luckily, the plot still holds some suprises (I won't tell, no worries). But the unique plot wouldn't be enough without characters, am I right? Fortunatelly, after the big shock, making lovely, lovable, but still deep characters has become one of the anime's main goal. The absolutely brilliant soundtrack helps out to reach this goal: there are so many memorable, lovely, sad, depressing one's that I can't even count. They always change mood as it pleases, making a scene more fun or more touching. Of course, I can't say anything bad about the visuals too.

But you could still ask me, "hey dude, that's cool and all but how could this be a 10/10?". Most of the episodes are just typical slife of life moments, as the girls are trying to have fun despite the clearly hopeless situation. And that's where the anime really begins to "shine". It doesn't really matter, how lovely a scene, or how much fun does the characters have: there is always a soul-destroying, depressing feeling in the viewer. Every time, the atmosphere starts to become a little uncomfortable, you try to search for the upcoming danger, even if there isn't one; you hold your breath with the characters as they are hiding from the undead; you are laughing with them, when Yuki has a new absurd idea, like organising a sports festival. These are the moments, when you realise: the anime made you feel with these characters and to empatize with their absurd, unimaginable situation.

Of course, I could still talk about the large amount of hidden details, which just confims the fact that this show is complex, full of hard work and deserves attention. But where the anime is the strongest is still the emotions. You will feel a various range of emotions from the beginning till the end. I can and will recommend this show, because the emotional ride that it gives is so unique that it must be experienced.

White Album 2
(2013)

I didn't have a show that was totally ruined by the ending. Until now...
When we talk about a show, doesn't matter if it's a TV Series or an anime, the ending is pretty influential. It can ruin the entire thing, or even "fix" it. Of course, some people (like me) says that the ending is not the most affecting thing in a show, but the journey is much more important. I didn't have a show that was totally ruined by the ending. But we can have exceptions, right?

The story is pretty simple: the guy protagonist, Kitahara Haruki is a tipical class rep, helpful, but strict to the rules guy. The two main female characters are Touma Kazusa and Ogiso Setsuna, who were convinced by the boy to join the Light Music Association, to make a performance at the school festival. That's how their complex, emotional love triangle starts!

I don't wanna be a mean guy, so first I'm gonna tell what I liked about the show: literally everything from episode 1 to 11. The plot is plain and generic, but it's a perfect starting point and the anime really makes a good use of it. It builds up characters that we enjoy watching, doesn't matter if they are main or side ones, each of them have good, funny moments, and emotional ones (but the latter applies of course mainly to the main characters). The music is fantastic, it goes very well for the scenes and they can really easily turn the mood as they wish.

And now, episode 12 and 13, the tutorial how to destroy everything you built up just to make a "good ending". But how can I enjoy a good ending if you literally destroy the characters and make them so terrible, that's unimaginable? And again, don't get me wrong; I can't hate a character if their personality makes a complete twist. If it was built up well. If. But it wasn't, Mr. White Album 2. You can't just ruin a character without any build up, because you will ruin the experience. Yes, I'm looking at you, Haruki, you piece of sh-

So only two questions remain: 1. Why did I gave a 5 still? The answer is simple: the first 11 episodes for me were 9/10. I can't just ignore everything, just because the ending was screwed up.

2. Do I recommend this anime? If you like to feel disappointed, than go ahead, watch it. If not, please don't. I don't want to hurt you by ruining the entire experience by this ending.

Koe no katachi
(2016)

Koe no Katachi: A Silent Voice
I don't even know how many times I tried to write a complex review about this movie. Every time when I sit down to do it, I can't put my thoughts into words. Hopefully I will be successful this time.

Koe no Katachi is a movie about a lot of subject. Here is the story in a nutshell: In the elementary school, Ishida lives his life as he wants to. He is the class clown basically, who does everything to conserve his own world. One day, a new student shows up: a deaf girl, called Nishimiya. She messes up the class life, because she obviously need support from her classmates, which becomes a burden after a short period of time. Ishida, who sees the girl as someone, who upsets the boy's life, start to bully her. Nishimiya's life becomes so horrible, that she has to change school. Clearly, Ishida is the main reason for this, so he gets back what he did to her; his friends start to bully him and everyone is avoiding him. We jump in the time: now Ishida is a high-schooler. He doesn't have any friends and he still carries the weight of what he did to his classmate. He even considers suicide, but life gives him another chance, to be forgiven and finally accept himself.

As we can see, the story is well-written and complex enough. Now talk about the characters: Ishida is obviously a dislikeable character at the beginning, but as he grows up, he realises what he did and tries everything to make amends. Nishimiya, the victim of the bullying, is the type of girl who is so lovely that makes your heart melt every time you see her. Of course, these are just character templates, but as the movie goes further, we gain insight of their daily lives, feelings and most importantly, their pain. The pain, which was left over from the past. Koe no Katachi's success would be nothing, if the remarkable story didn't have such great characters, like Ishida and Nishimiya. The side characters, naturally, are not as well-written as the main ones, but we still gain a little insight of their ambitions and their feelings too; this is mostly true for the relatives and classmates of the two main characters.

The art style is unique and beautiful, as we expected from Kyoto Animation. However, I really want to pull out the sounds and music. The sounds are so detailed, that we can't even realise it at the first time; as for the music, I can only say that every time I listen to 'lit(var)', I start to cry against my will. I'm just thinking about it right now, and it's enough to make me emotional. You can imagine how good the music is, if it can make me cry by just listening to it.

And last but not least: what is this movie about? When I first thought about it, I wrote something like "Connections with other people, and depression". Well, this is still true partly, but from now, I think the main subject is 'forgiving and accepting'. "Forgiving is easier than forgetting" - I hear this everywhere. But lets be real: you may forgive something to someone, but you will still carry that scar with you. It doesn't matter how big it is, you have to carry it in your entire life. If the scar is that huge, it can change your personality or ruin your whole life. This is the reason why 'accepting' is even more important than 'forgetting' or 'forgiving'. And this is what the movie taught me. It taught me throughthout tears and pain, but in the most beautiful way I can possibly imagine.

Purasutikku Memorîzu
(2015)

The importance of memories
I'm quite surprised. I didn't expect a slice of life/romcom genre. But I don't have a problem with that.

Plastic Memories works with the "we-know-that-the-main-character-will-die" cliche, however, our main character is not a human being, but a clumsy android. This is an overused, but still perfect setting for a drama, although the anime is not really about that, it's just the story. Isla, our female character, is well aware about her condition, so she doesn't really want to collect memories...because she will lose them eventually. Tsukasa, the other main character, accidentally meets the girl and falls in love with her eventually.

Even though, the story becomes really sad in the end, the main focus is not the drama. Of course, I was also crying in the end, but not really because of how sad it is, but because of how happy were they while they were together. The show leaves us not just with tears and used tissues, but with genuine happiness. We know that they had a really great time together, whose memories are never forgotten. This is the reason, why is it so important to collect memories with our loved ones. Because when it's time to say goodbye, that's all we will have. Isla learns this important message, along with the viewers as well.

Kimi no suizô o tabetai
(2018)

Hardly, but it hit my high expectations
A heartwarming story about an antisocial boy without friends, and a lively, bubbly girl...who is currently dying. I had very high expectations on this one, because I only heard positive feedback about the movie. And those expectations almost broke the movie. Don't get me wrong, this is a great anime. The main characters are good, it was lovely to watch every moment of Sakura. The entire story is heartwarming and the "plot-twist" hit kinda hard. I actually started to tear at the end. The message, that the movie wants to give us is also an important one. The anime is far away from being the best, but I can only recommend it.

I'm just here for the memes
I mean, literally. The only reason why it become popular was the OP, which is still great. However, if you stay for a little longer, you will realise that the anime is actually a good comedy with dumb but lovely characters. The jokes are funny and the show luckily doesn't take itself seriously. I can only recommend it.

Anazâ
(2012)

Waaaaaaaaaasted potentiaaaaaaaaaaal
I don't even know where should I start. The entire thing is boring at the first third. The deaths are like in the 'Final Destination' series; not serious, more like hilarious. The characters are not that interesting, if they start to be, they are dead immediately. The ending could save the show from becoming a complete mess, but no. It's just made it garbage. So why do I give a 2 star instead of a 1? The OP is cool, I liked it. But that's all.

Edit: The Manga 8/10. Way better than the anime adaption.

Gôruden taimu
(2013)

Underrated, but I loved it even more.
Fantastic show with such a low rating really. Well written characters with well written goals, correct visuals and the entire thing is sprinkled with soft humor and lots of emotions. And the OPs and EDs, they are also fantastic, one of the best ones I ever heard. Definitely worthy for you time.

Kanojo, Okarishimasu
(2020)

Sumi made it watchable.
Holy... I never thought a show it can be THIS embarrassing to watch. Basically the only episodes where I didn't want to dig myself into the ground was the last three episodes. And how can someone love these characters? The only good ones were Kazuya's friends (they had some funny moments) and Sumi (who basically said like two sentences). Maybe I'm too harsh. But this is NOT a 7.3. This show is so much worse.

Hyouka
(2012)

Hyouka; aka patiently waiting for the second season, which will never come.
I really like the work of Kyoto Animation. Unique and fantastic art style, perfect music and even more perfect stories. Hyouka almost has all of them. Or to be more precise, it had the potential to have all them.

The plot is nothing complex: Oreki Houtarou, our first main character is an energy-conservative guy, who has to join the 'Classics Club'. He meets our other main character, Chitanda Eru, who is tireless and very, very, very curious. Thanks to this ever-curious girl, Oreki is dragged into many mysteries and investigations, which is, of course, the complete opposite of the boy's lifestyle.

I have the obvious reasons why I like this anime. It's written at the first paragraph: it has the characteristics of Kyoto Animation's works. However, the thing I would consider the best in this anime is, the implementation of the story. Making a show about investigating mysteries can be pretty hard, especially because it can easily be boring and/or unnecessarily complex, especially at the slice of life genre. Luckily, Hyouka manages to remain interesting and entertaining, with the help of its well-written characters. The situations are somehow remarkable and down to earth at the same time. Hyouka is a school example of how to make a slice of life anime, which maintains the interest from the start till the end.

So what's the problem with it? The answer is simple: the length. Hyouka is an adaptation of a light novel series, so it still has stories to...adapt basically. However, there is a great chance that will never happen (unfortunatelly) for obvious reasons. Still, me and everyone who loved the show will wait patiently, if it ever gonna happen.

Seishun buta yaro wa yumemiru shoujo no yume wo minai
(2019)

That one hurt really badly...in a good way?
I can only say this straight: This movie is f*king painful. But still, it's even better than the first season of the anime. The movie uses its characters the same perfect way as the show, but still gave something more to them. The plot is confusing as hell but still followable. If you loved the show, you will love the movie even more. Trust me.

Seishun buta yaro wa Bunny Girl-senpai no yume wo minai
(2018)

Don't let the title fool you!
I mean, I was very sceptical about this anime. But I heard so much good about it so I gave it a try and oh man, this is actually something really good. The plot is interesting, it has a soft humor and can become emotional, especially at the last episodes. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm 100% sure that we need a second season.
