Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60
(2016)

Extremely laboured, bad impression comedy
Starting with possible one of the worst cold opens I've ever seen in a standup show, Dana Carvey launches directly into impressions of political figures. While he did at least ridicule all sides of the political spectrum in equal measure, he very much played the "here's what you want to hear" card.

Impression comedy can be great in small doses, but a standup routine so littered with them, especially when they're bad, can be painful to watch. His transitions between bits bordered on the quality of his open. It seems he just wrote a list of a dozen people he can do a mediocre impression of and went through them in sequence with no adjoining material.

The general sentiment from other reviewers seems to be that Dana has other strong material, and this was just one of his bad days. In that case, you may find it worth a watch. But if this is your first time encountering Dana, I'd recommend avoiding this special.

Theo Von: No Offense
(2016)

Proof that offensive comedy can sometimes miss the mark
I'm a big fan of Theo Von's appearances on podcasts and his more natural comedy, but his standup can leave a lot to be desired. Following the trend of offensive comedy that has been succesful for a lot of other standups, Theo lacks the finesse to actually pull it off.

His lack of filter makes him one of the funniest guys to watch ramble, but when it's mixed in with his pre-written show plan, it can feel very disjointed. While there are a couple of funny moments, some of it is really cringey, and that's not because I have an issue with offensive comedy. While those like Anthony Jeselnik have the ability to make you laugh about some of the most controversial topics, Theo seems to take the same premise, and the same punchlines, but misses any of the substance in between.

Whether it was Netflix's audio editing I don't know, but the crowd looks particularly uninterested for the first half of the performance, notably showing little reaction to the punchlines and adding to that overwhelming feel of cringe.

Great comedian to keep an eye on, but standup's not his specialty.

John Wick
(2014)

Short, sweet, breathtaking cinematography.
The action shots for John Wick are some of the best in cinema. With a groundbreaking feeling on parallel to the release of another Keanu focused movie, The Matrix, action and fight sequences feel natural and steady. None of that shaky cam fake action.

The movie doesn't add any unnecessary padding that doesn't feel necessary to the story. However, this sometimes plays to it's detriment when we see characters come and go that try to show complexity without the time to properly develop them and make us care.

My biggest criticism would be in the antagonist's character, which seems to flip about halfway through the movie for no apparent reason, and feels wildly inconsistent in his behaviour and decision making.

This movie reeked of comic book adaptation, and it's no surprise that a comic book series has been put into motion after the films release. It plays off the comic book balance of just enough origin story to grasp the protagonist's motives, but not too much as to ruin the mystery or close off possible story archs in future titles.

Knock Down the House
(2019)

Beyond the politics, brilliant documentary
I've never been a big fan of AOC, but this is an amazing window in the process faced by citizens trying to disrupt the establishment bias of congressional and senate elections. Brilliant documentary style and very down to earth compared to similar attempts. Doesn't focus heavily on the politics involved, significantly more on the process.

No matter who you vote for, this is a great watch.

Black Summer
(2019)

No amount of sheer will could make this worth trying
Now I'm a big fan of the zombie genre, and nothing excites me more than another zombies series stepping into the fray, but this was a token copy paste of any generic zombie script. The characters have zero likeability, dialogue is robotic, acting is absurdly overzealous at times then confusingly mellow at others. The mood changes back and force from absolute pandemonium to abject calm in the space of 10 seconds for no clear reason.
