As we close in on the end of another regular TV season, it means final decisions will be made. There are still a number of Fox shows on the bubble, and some I need to see make it through another season. Some of these are likely going to make it, while others are very much at the bottom in terms of linear ratings and their futures are on the line.

This is a mixture of drama, comedy, and reality TV. You won’t see me write about everything regularly because I like to keep some shows as ones that I watch for entertainment, but just because I don’t write about them doesn’t mean I don’t like them.

Deadline on Monday launched the streaming site for its Contenders Television 2025, its showcase of series and TV movies that marks the start of the small-screen awards season.

The cast and creatives from a total of 27 shows appeared over the weekend in a pair of all-day affairs at the DGA Theater, with the discussions delving deep into the journeys their projects took to get made, and even to tease what’s coming next. The complete panel videos are now available.

Denis Leary said authenticity to the military is as important as being funny on his new show Going Dutch. Leary plays Army Col. Patrick Quinn, who gets re-assigned to a base in the Netherlands after ranting against the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He and the base’s soldiers engage in comic hijinx, but they’re never making fun of the Army.

“I know we’re supposed to be funny but we’re also supposed to be soldiers,” Leary said. “We’re all dressed that way. Even if we’re just in the hair and makeup trailer, generally we’re in our uniforms. It’s a constant reminder.”

Leary developed the show as executive producer with creator Joel Church-Cooper. Leary said detail is so important to him, he insists on acoutrements the audience will never see.

Fox veterans The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers have never really been on the bubble because first, they remain strong performers for the network, and secondly, due to the longer lead time needed in animation, they would always get an early renewal. That was taken to a new level this year as all three, along with American Dad!, returning to Fox after an 11-year run on TBS, have just been given four-year pickups, keeping the 20th TV Animation-produced comedies off the bubble list for the foreseeable future.

Also safe are the two Fox-owned animated comedies, Krapopolis and Grimsburg, which are not as strong in the ratings as the three long-timers but still bring eyeballs while also making money for the network via international and streaming sales. Sitcoms have a harder time than ever to really catch on to what the public wants. It's sort of a genre stable that viewers need a few seasons to get to know the characters and storylines they'll be enjoying. Unfortunately, the market is so competitive today that it's almost impossible for many new sitcoms to survive past one season. Many fresh and hilarious comedy shows have fallen by the wayside only because of low viewership, leading to a show's eventual premature cancelation. On top of that, no other sitcoms have it harder than the ones on network television, such as Fox's brand-new sitcom Going Dutch.

Going Dutch was created by Joel Church-Cooper and stars Denis Leary alongside a massive cast of hilarious characters in a show that seemingly fits Leary's charismatic and brash personality to a T. The show premiered right after the New Year on January 2, 2025, and was met with positive reviews.

Every year, the Fox television network airs new and continuing TV series. Many are cancelled and many are renewed by the season's end. Although everyone understands that Nielsen ratings usually play a big role in TV cancellations and renewals, most fans do not get to participate in that system. So, we are offering you the chance to rate Fox TV shows here, instead.

Exclusive: Brooke Shields is ready to revisit the setting that made her a global star in the 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon, with SNL alum David Spade joining her for the ride. Fox is developing Almost Paradise, a multi-camera sitcom from comedy veteran Danny Zuker (Modern Family) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Written by Zuker, Almost Paradise is described as The Blue Lagoon meets Gilligan’s Island. Its logline reads: Just your everyday, normal married couple facing all the everyday, normal challenges of being stranded on a desert Island for decades. Think Blue Lagoon, the family sitcom.

The idea originated from a general meeting between Shields and Kaplan. The two then approached Spade, on whose NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! Shields had guest starred and Zuker had worked for two seasons as consulting producer/co-executive producer.

There are still a lot of Fox shows sitting on the bubble in 2025, which isn’t surprising for this time of the year. A lot of the renewals and cancellations come just ahead of the May Upfronts.

This is a chance to look at the shows that are airing right now. We can make a prediction on the Fox shows that could be canecled or renewed, using the linear ratings for the most part. Of course, Fox looks at more than just the linear ratings, but this is a strong indication of a show’s future.

So far, four Fox shows have been renewed: Universal Basic Guys, Doc, Murder in a Small Town, and Krapopolis. One show has come to an end, 911: Lone Star. That’s a lot still on the bubble!

On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert opened “The Late Show” with a joke about Donald Trump’s tariffs. During “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Jimmy Kimmel spoke to Denis Leary about his new Fox sitcom, “Going Dutch.” And over on Netflix, John Mulaney peeped at his neighbors through a telescope.

One of these things is not like the other. Even if the gist of Mulaney’s bit sounds like it might be setting up some sort of game — similar to what “Tonight Show” viewers seem to enjoy — the execution doesn’t deliver Jimmy Fallon’s typical tomfoolery. (Every “neighbor” Mulaney saw was soon attacked by a man with a lamp.) Instead, the discomforting gag further separates “Everybody’s Live” from traditional late-night talk shows, even as it doubles down on what Mulaney already created with his 2024 cult hit, “Everybody’s in L.A.”

After a rough few years in the broadcast landscape, the 2024-25 season has brought in some rays of hope.

To be sure, the long-term structural challenges for network TV remain in a world where streaming is the default platform for the largest share of viewers and ongoing corporate consolidation continues to shrink the number of potential suppliers (and buyers) of shows. But several network shows have achieved breakout status in the past year, and each of the big four broadcasters (ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC) can claim at least one success story among their crop of first-year series. The fact that networks are also the primary suppliers of the long-running, deep-library shows that keep streaming services humming also seems to have sunk in across the industry.

Fox Corp. is planning on launching a new subscription-based streaming service by the end of 2025, company executives revealed on their earnings call on Tuesday morning.

CEO Lachlan Murdoch said the service will be priced “relatively low” and offer “existing content and existing brands.” The yet-to-be-named platform will provide a “holistic” offering of Fox programming, he added, including sports, TV shows and news.

Murdoch did not offer an exact launch date for the new service, but said it will be aimed at reaching viewers who do not typically pay for cable and other pay TV services. Fox, Murdoch noted, will be targeting a “large population outside the cable bundle.”

Shows currently airing on Fox include long-running series like “Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Simpsons,” as well as Denis Leary’s new show “Going Dutch.”
