Crime Novelist Don Winslow Unretires For ‘The Final Score’
Image
Exclusive: Author Don Winslow might not be the retiring type, after all.

The prolific bestselling crime novelist “paused” his retirement to write a new collection of short novels titled The Final Score. The deal was made quietly a few months ago, and it is now up for pre-orders on Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. Harper Collins/William Morrow will release the book on September 16.

“I don’t know if I am back for one more book or more,” Winslow told Deadline. “One day I just started writing again and I couldn’t stop. I wrote all of these stories in secret and for the first time in decades without a deadline. It felt good and I feel that two of these stories, Collision and The Final Score, are among the best work I’ve ever done.” Those will be the ones shopped for film and TV deals.

City on Fire: Matt Ross to direct Austin Butler in adaptation of Don Winslow novel
Austin Butler
Austin Butler has been attached to star in an adaptation of Don Winslow’s City on Fire for the last two years, but the project is finally moving forward as it now has a director. Deadline reports that Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) has been tapped to direct City on Fire for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.

The novel is the first installment of a trilogy that “focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England, until a modern-day Helen of Troy tears them apart and starts a brutal war. The main character, Danny Ryan, is forced to grow from a street soldier into a ruthlessly efficient leader to protect his friends, his family and the home he loves. Fighting the Mafia, the local cops, the feds – everyone – Danny builds a dynasty or will die trying.” Should the film be successful, I’d imagine that the other two novels,...

Luca Guadagnino's 'Sgt. Rock' Movie Cancelled at DC Studios
Image
It’s been just over a month since it was reported that Colin Farrell would star in the Dcu’s Sgt. Rock movie from Luca Guadagnino, but now things have come to a screeching halt. THR is reporting that Sgt. Rock is no longer moving forward before it ever began production. James Gunn mentioned during a DC event earlier this year with Collider in attendance that there had been some trouble getting the project off the ground. THR also included in their report that Mike Faist, who previously starred in Challengers for Guadagnino, was also in talks to star in the project. It was in pre-production in England and was planning to begin shooting this summer. It’s unclear at the time why the project was scrapped, but it’s the first under Gunn to receive the ax.

Before Colin Farrell signed on for Sgt. Rock, it was Daniel Craig...

Havoc, John Woo, and how action cinema crosses cultures and continents
Image
The action cinema of John Wick, Havoc and John Woo’s The Killer has constantly evolved as it’s travelled between filmmakers and eras.

Now on Netflix, writer-director Gareth Evans’ Havoc is an ultra-violent stew of influences. It’s set in a benighted US city, but was shot in Wales; its bullet-strewn action is directly inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.

Then again, action cinema has always been a particularly international genre, taking in disparate bits of American westerns, low-key French thrillers and more besides. When John Woo directed A Better Tomorrow, released in 1986, its contemporary gangland setting and ferocious shoot-outs changed the look and feel of action cinema forever. Widely credited with inventing what was later dubbed the ‘heroic bloodshed’ genre, it made a star out of its lead, Chow Yun-fat.

Woo continued to hone his signature style – slow-motion photography, close-quarters action, and his characters’ habit of holding...

‘The Studio’ star Chase Sui Wonders on Seth Rogen’s advice, annoying Ron Howard, and wiping nacho cheese on Kathryn Hahn

Seth Rogen. Catherine O'Hara. Kathryn Hahn. Ike Barinholtz.

It's an intimidating cast list, to be sure — and that's before you even get to the guest stars of Apple TV+'s The Studio, which reads like something out of a Hollywood Rolodex, if those still existed.

So it's perfectly understandable that Chase Sui Wonders, who plays career-hungry assistant-turned-executive Quinn, was "petrified," as she puts it, her first day on set. "Being surrounded by all of these comedy legends is a dream," she says. "But Seth and Evan and all the actors involved are really warm and welcoming, which is not necessarily the case for a room full of comedians trying to be really funny. They all want you to crush."

And crush she did — in fact, that first day had her filming the show's fifth episode, "The War," which pits her against Barinholtz's Sal Saperstein in an all-out, no-holds-barred battle to...

Quentin Tarantino's Most Scathing Critic Never Saw a Single Film He Made
Image
Whether an in-joke among movie fans or broad references, director Quentin Tarantino has cemented his reputation over the past 30-plus years by being a walking repository of cinema history. He's arguably more knowledgeable than many film professors. And while these asides may allude to mainstream movies, his creative reinterpretations of other films' ideas often come with a wink and a nod to film geeks, requiring citations for those casual movie-watchers.

To call him a cinephile is an understatement. But in the eyes of one of the medium's greatest creators, Tarantino is "detestable." His harshest critic wasn’t even around to see his first film. Orson Welles predicted, or rather warned against, Tarantino’s style of movie-making. Near the end of his life, Welles observed that younger directors were "marinated" in movies to their detriment. He accurately anticipated the ascent of pop-culture-quoting meta-movies that rely on having an audience that has consumed thousands of films.

‘Silo’ Season 3 Casts Jessica Henwick, Ashley Zukerman
Image
“Silo” Season 3 is already building out its cast.

Variety has learned that both Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman are set to appear as series regulars in the upcoming third season of the Apple TV+ post-apocalyptic drama based on Hugh Howey’s “Wool” novel trilogy.

Zukerman will play Daniel, described as a “young and hungry congressman,” while Henwick will play Helen, said to be a “whip-smart reporter.” Both actors recently appeared in the Season 2 finale and will continue in the same roles in Season 3.

The casting news comes roughly one month after Apple renewed the show for both Seasons 3 and 4, with Season 4 set to be the final season.

Henwick’s previous TV credits include “Game of Thrones,” “Iron Fist,” and “Silk,” while she has also been in films like “Glass Onion,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” and “The Royal Hotel.” She is repped by CAA, imPRint, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

‘Silo’ Season 3 Adds Ashley Zukerman and Jessica Henwick as Series Regulars
Image
“Silo” is growing its Season 3 cast with the additions of Ashley Zukerman and and Jessica Henwick.

Zukerman (“Succession,” “Fear Street” trilogy) and Henwick (“Huntington,” “The Royal Hotel,” “Glass Onion”) will join the Rebecca Ferguson-led show as series regulars beginning next season, Apple TV+ announced Friday. The news comes the same day as “Silo” debuted its Season 2 finale, which (spoiler alert) includes a scene that teases the new characters.

In Season 3, which was greenlit by the streamer alongside a fourth installment in December, Zukerman will star as Daniel, a young and hungry congressman, while Henwick joins the cast as Helen, a whip-smart reporter, per the official character descriptions.

“Silo” creator Graham Yost told TheWrap that Daniel and Helen are both characters from the second book in Hugh Howey’s trilogy on which “Silo” is based, but they made some changes.

“We’ve monkeyed with the origin story dramatically, renaming him from Donald to Daniel,...

Long-Rare Films from John Woo, Johnnie To, Tsui Hark & More Acquired By Shout! Studios
Image
What is quite obviously the best film news of 2025 thus far (and will be tough to beat in the foreseeable future) comes via Variety, who tell us Shout! Studios have acquired worldwide rights (minus certain Asian territories) to 156 films owned by Hong Kong’s legendary Golden Princess, comprising the likes of John Woo, Johnnie To, Tsui Hark, and Ringo Lam, to say nothing of filmmakers whose work’s been long sequestered from western eyes and is finally receiving due attention. For those who consider Hong Kong cinema between the ’80s and ’90s something of a peak for the medium itself (hello) this is a nice leavening effect the same month Los Angeles burns and Donald Trump becomes President once more.

One might expect it’ll take a second for any library so vast as Golden Princess’ to arrive. Restoration plans are unclear, minus the notice that Shout! looks to “remaster...
