Heavy Metal (1981) – The Test of Time
Image
Adult animation isn’t something that gets talked about enough. Paving the way for today’s movie were things like Fritz the Cat, Lord of the Rings which is not expressly adult of course, and Wizards. Let us know if we should talk about Wizards in some form by the way. Other movies that firmly tie into a similar vein of Heavy Metal are American Pop from the same year and Fire and Ice from a couple years later. While a bunch of the animated movies listed or even not listed fall under the sex comedy, fantasy, or recreation of modern life, Heavy Metal is something else entirely. It’s an anthology sci-fi, horror, comedy, action, fantasy that has a rocking soundtrack and earns its hard R rating. It was held back from being on video for a while due to licensing issues but has become an endearing cult classic 44 years later.

These 3 Massive Mistakes Led to Boba Fett's Downfall in Return of the Jedi
Image
Quick LinksBoba Fett's Defeat Mirrored His Father's DemiseLuck Was Not on Boba Fett's Side in Return of the Jedi

Boba Fett has become one of the Star Wars franchise's most popular characters. He made a brief appearance in animated form as part of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, but he made his live-action debut in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. His unique armor and intimidating presence made him instantly iconic among film's colorful cast. Within the Star Wars universe, Boba was widely considered to be one of the galaxy's greatest bounty hunters, if not the very best. Powerful villains like Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt frequently hired Boba for important missions, and his very name was enough to strike fear into the hearts of his targets. Over the years, he has starred in many comic books, novels and even a live-action Disney+ series.

Yellowjackets Star Would Return to Star Wars 'in a Heartbeat'
Image
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher has expressed interest in returning to the Star Wars franchise. Thatcher previously played the cyborg gang leader Drash in The Book of Boba Fett.

The 2021 Disney+ series centered around reformed bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) seizing control of crime boss Jabba the Hutt's territory on Tatooine with the help of his trusted associate Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Thatcher's character Drash and fellow cyborg Skad (Jordan Bolger) initially opposed Fett before he gained their respect and they agreed to join forces.

How Star Wars Rebels Brought Back the Original Boba Fett Into Canon

Star Wars Rebels was heavily inspired by the concept art of Ralph McQuarrie, taking cues from the early ideas behind characters like Boba Fett.

10 Horror Movies Where The Killer Is A Friend Or Family Member
Image
Horror movies often feature killers who are connected to the main characters, adding twists that stick with audiences long after the credits roll. Classic slashers like My Bloody Valentine and Halloween II showcase how familial relations can drive killers to seek vengeance and terrorize those closest to them. Movies like Psycho and Scream have cemented iconic twists in horror history, exploring the dark depths of the human psyche and redefining the genre with self-aware storytelling.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!A horror movie is only as good as its villain, and in some cases, they turn out to be someone close to the protagonist. Whether that's a friend or family member, killers in movies of the horror and slasher variety often turn out to be related to the main characters. This often makes for a satisfying twist that keeps audiences engaged whilst still providing them with plenty of scares along the way.

Diving into the Musical Madness of 1983’s Rock Opera ‘Rock & Rule’
Image
With the release of films like Mad God and The Spine of Night (not to mention a poignant reminder by Guillermo del Toro at the 95th Academy Awards ceremony), it seems like Western audiences are one step closer to catching up with the rest of the world in realizing that animation is more than capable of telling complex, adult-oriented stories.

However, this doesn’t mean that older animated films avoided mature themes and experimental narratives – it’s just that many of these movies turned out to be huge flops, with the very best of them destined to become cult classics decades after they underperformed at the box-office. And when it comes to animated flops, there are few films more remarkable than Clive A. Smith’s beautiful disaster, 1983’s Rock & Rule. An unprecedented financial failure, this oddball rock opera would go on to entertain fans of weird cinema for decades...

A Star Wars Theory Explains How Lando Helped Save Han Solo
Image
Quick Links Boba Fett Knew About The Scheme To Rescue Han Solo Boba Fett And Lando Calrissian Have A History In Legends What Would This Theory Mean For Boba Fett And Lando Calrissian's Future In Star Wars? A Star Wars fan theory suggests that Boba Fett knew about the rescue mission to save Han Solo in Return of the Jedi. Lando Calrissian may have made a deal with Boba Fett or used an old trick that worked on the bounty hunter before in Star Wars Legends. This theory could set up future appearances for Boba Fett and Lando Calrissian, perhaps working together in a second season of The Book of Boba Fett.

Star Wars Didn't Pay Boba Fett's Voice Actor Much, But An Underwear Ad Did
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Ah, Boba Fett. The bounty hunter with a Mandalorian helmet first appeared in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" in an animated sequence that was slightly less bats**t bizarre than the rest of that monstrosity (which I do admit to having a soft spot for). He would subsequently return in "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back," working for Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones) and taking the body of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), frozen in carbonite, to Jabba the Hutt. His role was very small, but that character design was just too good for him to fade into the background. Fans went a little wild over him. Eventually, Boba even got a dad and a backstory in the prequel trilogy, in addition to his very own show on Disney+, "The Book of Boba Fett," starring Temuera Morrison.

Boba Fett's Original Actor Had One Issue With The Star Wars Special Editions
Image
A fun piece of trivia: the "Star Wars" character Boba Fett, prior to his inclusion in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" -- which didn't air until November 17, 1978 -- made a live appearance in a parade in the San Anselmo County Fair the previous September. The parade may have been before the character had been given a name, and "Star Wars" fans were tantalized to see a new, mysterious figure walking down the street next to Darth Vader. It was the first appearance of Boba Fett.

The stoic, faceless, and largely mute character, because of his cool helmet, became a fan favorite over the years, and Boba Fett's importance has grown since 1978 to the point where he got his own TV series. Boba Fett has been played by many actors over the years. In "Empire" and in "Return of the Jedi," Jeremy Bulloch wore the suit, while Jason Wingreen played his voice.

Boba Fett has been played by multiple actors throughout his 40-year history in the Star Wars franchise, ranging from voice actors to physical performers. Jeremy Bulloch is best known for physically portraying Boba Fett in the original Star Wars trilogy, while Jason Wingreen provided his voice in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Temuera Morrison, who initially played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones, returned to the role of Boba Fett in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, portraying the adult version of the character. Daniel Logan portrayed young Boba Fett in Attack of the Clones and voiced him in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, while Finnegan Garay acted as a body double for Logan in The Book of Boba Fett.

Initially introduced in The Empire Strikes Back, the bounty hunter Boba Fett quickly became a Star Wars icon, but over the course of his 40-year history,...

After Over 40 Years, Boba Fett Is Finally A Star Wars Lead
Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew in The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Though he now insists he's #NotABountyHunter, Boba Fett has been knocking about the galaxy — and, yes, bounty hunting — since 1978 when he first appeared in a different color scheme and in animated form in the notorious "Star Wars Holiday Special" (now in 4K). As of today, Fett is officially the star of his own Disney+ series, "The Book of Boba Fett," the first episode of which is now available to stream.

It's been a long road to this series. Don Francks provided the voice of Boba Fett in the "Holiday Special," where Darth Vader (James Earl Jones) secretly employed his services and called him "the best bounty hunter...

How Boba Fett Actor Jeremy Bulloch Set the Template for The Mandalorian
Image
Boba Fett’s green, T-visored helmet is a menacing visage that’s nearly evocative of Star Wars as Darth Vader’s; one first embodied on film by actor Jeremy Bulloch, who, sadly, passed away on December 17 at the age of 75. However, the legacy that Bulloch leaves behind has proven far greater than a character with minimal screentime and dubbed lines seemingly had any right to possess. It’s a legacy to which hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian owes a great deal of thanks.

Bulloch, born in Leicestershire, England on February 16, 1945, wasted little time getting himself onscreen with uncredited roles—while still an adolescent—in 1958 films Violent Playground and Titanic tragedy movie A Night to Remember, continuing to work steadily for years in U.K.-aimed films and television shows. He fielded a notable four-episode 1974 run as Hal the Archer on Doctor Who (opposite Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor); his second run on the series,...

How The Mandalorian’s Amban Phase-Pulse Blaster Went from Holiday Special Joke to Nerf Toy
Image
This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.

The Mandalorian’s Star Wars lore elements are firmly cemented in pop culture now, so the mind-blowing impact of one of its earliest teases, the title character’s devastating, disintegration-dealing Amban phase-pulse blaster, might already be forgotten. However, the signature forked firearm of Din Djarin, is now set to reach a new tier of popularity: a Nerf toy.

The Amban rifle’s Nerf treatment was recently revealed by Hasbro, which has put together an impressive foam-flinging toy that measures 50.25 inches (1.27 meters) in length. The blaster, which makes series-accurate sound effects when firing Nerf bolts, stops short of resembling a replica—for obvious safety reasons—with a toy-distinguishing grey barrel that contrasts with bright-red parts on the scope, barrel, and trigger. Priced at a hefty $119.99, the rifle won’t be available until October 2021, but it will arrive in time for Christmas (Life Day) next year,...

27 Things We Learned from Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Finian’s Rainbow’ Commentary
“Before I said I was going to do Finian’s Rainbow I should have read the book.”Finian’s Rainbow (1968)

Commentator: Francis Ford Coppola (director)

1. Regarding the film’s opening frame featuring the word “overture” onscreen, he says it’s because this was what was referred to as a roadshow production. “They were like a night at the theater. You were given a program, it was an event, and as you came to your seat there was an overture playing.” It’s a long absent format, but Quentin Tarantino recently revived it for some screenings of The Hateful Eight.

2. He says a benefit of 70mm productions was that “the soundtrack would be in six-track magnetic stereophonic sound and was very high quality.”

3. The Warner Bros/Seven Arts logo reminds him of his time spent at the latter company working as a staff writer when they bought WB. “It was quite a coincidence related to my directing this...

Finian’s Rainbow
As a musical it’s excellent — fine tunes and lyrics, great singing and dancing by the ever-youthful Fred Astaire, the glorious songbird Petula Clark, and the impishly weird Tommy Steele cast appropriately as a grimacing Leprechaun. The update of what was a politically acute Broadway hit in 1947 is awkward but the show is a melodious pleasure — great color, fine voices and peppy direction by Francis Ford Coppola on his first big studio feature.

Joss Whedon Returns to Marvel Comics to Tell a New Captain America Story
As many of you already know, Joss Whedon worked with Marvel Comics writing a run of Astonishing X-Men that brought Colossus back and introduced several other X-Men characters. Marvelous DA7E: Money Talks -The X-Future and Return of Big Hero 6!
Deadpool continues to rack up the dollars, so Deadpool continues to silently change the landscape of 20th Century Fox as Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice enters the final marketing push in the foreground.

First, we were supposed to get two more X-Movies this year, at least according to the previous release schedule we were working off. X-Men: Apocalypse will still drop at the end of May (as Captain America: Civil War wears off from earlier in the month), but October 7, 2016 is no longer the release date for Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. It appears that movie has been pulled from the schedule entirely.

22 things I learned from reading Peter Mayhew's original 'Star Wars' script

For the last week, Star Wars fans who follow Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) on Twitter have been enjoying a special treat. That would normally be the end of things, with fans and journalists periodically checking back to see if the news had dropped. But then Mayhew did something fun…he started posting photos of his original Star Wars script every day and promised to keep it up until the unknown day of the announcement. So far we’re eight days in. No announcement yet, but so far the posted script pages have been fascinating. From dialogue changes to more background information to characters that never saw the light of day, it’s an interesting trip down memory lane. Day One: Starting today I'll post...

The Best Films at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival
With the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival wrapping up this week, we’ve highlighted our five favorite films from the slate. Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa)

One has to appreciate Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s winking self-awareness in calling his new feature Creepy. It’s as if the Coen brothers released a film entitled Snarky, or Eli Roth named his next stomach-churner Gory. Kurosawa, who’s still best known for Cure (1997) and Pulse (2001), two rare outstanding examples of the highly variable J-Horror genre, instills a sense of creepiness into virtually anything he does, regardless of subject matter. His latest, which sees him return to the realm of horror after excursions into more arthouse territory, certainly lives up to its name...

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Poorly Cast Hoffman as Polemical Stand-Up Comic and Free Speech Advocate in Timorous Biopic
Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Robin Spry films (and dries up) the streets
Beating Schrader’s Hardcore to the punch by a matter of months, Robin Spry’s grim and gritty gutter-level drama is driven by a not-dissimilar premise, that of a man searching the seedy urban underbelly for his drug-addicted prostitute daughter. Rather astonishing that it was made for TV – the remarkably bleak opening indicates that no punches are going to be pulled, as we first see Peter Brennan (Don Francks), before the credits have even finished rolling, nodding out in a grimy cafe toilet, the needle still sticking out of his arm. This is followed by howling hospital cold turkey, as a borderline sadistic cop plays Peter a slide show of a drug-addicted girl forced into sex work, before revealing that said girl is Peter’s own daughter. We then get to see said slide show again in harrowing close-up, while Peter wails ever louder. So, once recovered, and with regular...

Review: “Fast Company” (1979) Starring William Smith, John Saxon And Claudia Jennings; Blue Underground Blu-ray
By Ernie Magnotta

These days, cinema buffs searching high and low for a lost, early work of a modern filmmaker is almost unheard of , as most everything is readily available on DVD or Blu-ray. However, back in the day, this was far from the case. Way back when, many early efforts from then current directorial masters were extremely hard to find. For example, throughout the 1980s, I can remember looking everywhere for a copy of George A. Romero’s third film Season of the Witch aka Hungry Wives (1972) as well as Martin Scorsese’s debut feature Who’s That Knocking at My Door? (1967) just to name a few. Another movie I always longed to see was a strange, little action film called Fast Company. The reason I use the word strange is because the movie was directed by the enormously talented, Canadian born David Cronenberg. Although he is now known...

Since then Valentine’s Day hasn’t been celebrated for fear of Harry Warden’s wrath. With the first dance in twenty years looming, people start turning up dead. Has Harry Warden finally returned?

My Bloody Valentine was released at the height of the Slasher craze. After Black Christmas,...

By Harvey Chartrand

So what I'm doing with this website is having you submit ideas for stories, characters, or worlds that we can use...
