Project Eerie, the new film from Ricky Umberger the maker of The Fear Footage and its sequels The Fear Footage 2: Curse of the Tape and The Fear Footage: 3Am opens, like many found footage films, with a brief message telling us where the footage we’re about to see came from. In this case, what we are about to see was originally livestreamed on social media. And that viewer discretion is advised.
What we see does look like a typical livestream as a couple of bored idiots, Jesse (Braydan Wade) and his brother Jacob (Jacob) drive around smashing pumpkins and getting high before having the brilliant idea to sneak into an abandoned government facility. Once inside, security seems to be non-existent,...

When I was younger I was a big James Herbert fan, so watching The Survivor was something I just had to do. Confusing and slow, I’ll admit I was not ready for what I found with the film, but now with its new release on Blu-ray, is it about time to give the film another chance?
When a 747 crash lands in a Sydney suburb the only other survivor is David Keller (Robert Powell). Unable to remember what happened to make the plane crash, he starts his own investigation into what happened. With the help of local psychic Hobbs (Jenny Agutter) he discovers not only why the plane crashed, but also why some of the dead refuse to be at peace.

Unfortunately for me, before Scream Factory announced that they would be releasing Deadly Eyes to Blu-ray, I had never even heard of the film. As often as I frequented the video store(Daily, for the 5-for-5-for-5 deals), I never even saw Deadly Eyes on the shelf. Had someone explained to me back then, or any time since, that a film exists wherein they strap giant rat costumes to the backs of small dogs, and get them to attack people by stuffing dog food in their pockets, I would have been on a mission to find said movie, because that sounds awesome. Does it not? On the bright side, this means that my first exposure to this film, was Scream Factory’s gorgeous Blu-ray release, stuffed with extras exposing everything I could ever want to know about these dogs dressed up as killer rats. Even before I watched the interviews on the disc,...

Dachshunds dressed up as giant rats terrorize Toronto in a nature gone amok thriller from the director of Enter the Dragon. Guilty pleasures don’t get much guiltier than Deadly Eyes, and surprise announcements don’t get much more surprising than Scream Factory’s plan to release this 1982 creature feature.
It really would be an understatement to state that Scream Factory’s announcement Friday afternoon that they have acquired the rights to the early Eighties Warner Bros./Golden Harvest mutant rat b-movie bonanza Deadly Eyes came as a surprise to most everyone.
This slice of Canuxsploitation starring Scatman Crothers (The Shining) and Canadian scream queens Lesleh Donaldson (Curtains) and Lisa Langlois (Happy Birthday to Me) has been toiling in obscurity for so long I don’t think too many people expected to ever see it get an official release in any post-vhs form. As March nears an end, it will be noted for losing three horror novelists:
From Locus:
Writer and editor David B. Silva, 62, died in early March, 2013.
Silva is best known for editing influential magazine The Horror Show, which ran from 1982-1991 . Silva won a World Fantasy Award in 1988 in the special, non-professional category for his work on the magazine. He also edited anthologies, including Post Mortem: New Tales of Ghostly Horror (1989) and Dead End: City Limits (1991), both with Paul F. Olson, as well as books collecting the best work from The Horror Show. From 1997-2002 he and Olson co-edited industry newsletter Hellnotes, for horror professionals and fans. In 2004, the newsletter was revived as a website.
Silva began publishing short fiction in 1981, and The Calling (1990) won a Bram Stoker Award. Several of his other stories were Stoker finalists, and collection Through Shattered Glass (2001) won an International Horror Guild Award...

The tight-knit horror fiction community was left reeling last week by the loss of three gentlemen over a ten-day period; three men who’d served as inspiration, as mentors, as legends, as examples of the best the genre has to offer. They were men who, in their own individual ways, pushed against the boundaries of horror to challenge what it could do and what could be said within its confines.
David B. Silva died around March 12.
James Herbert died on March 20.
Rick Hautala died on March 21.
Each of them was in his 60s, and each was still working – in fact, each of them had published books within the last few months. Based on the outpouring of remembrances that have flooded the Internet over the last several days, each of them had a profound impact on their fellow horror writers.

On Wednesday 20th March 2013 one of the finest and most influential British writers of our lifetime passed away at the age of 69. James Herbert OBE provided pleasure for a great many people through this books and inspired more than a few of the current crop of top British writers including David Moody, creator of the Autumn and Hater series (who wrote his own tribute here), and Joseph Freeman, author of They Come At Dusk, who had known Herbert personally for two decades and valued his friendship and his advice to up and coming writers.
I personally discovered James Herbert back in 1980 when I borrowed a dog eared paperback copy of a book called The Rats from my friend Nick. His dad was a huge reader, particularly of the horror and science fiction genres, and so I was lucky enough to have been exposed to the early works of authors like...

Anyone who is at all familiar with genre writing knows the works of James Herbert. The British author who wrote 23 novels including The Rats, Haunted, and The Fog, died yesterday at 69 years of age.
Four of his works were made into films -- most notably his book The Rats that depicts London infested with flesh-eating, mutant rodents. The novel sold out its first 1974 printing in three weeks and was loosely adapted into the movie Deadly Eyes directed by Robert Clouse.
Herbert inspired countless horror writers, including Neil Gaiman, who remembers the author:
“Jim’s [sales] numbers were extraordinary and he was very grumpy that nobody noticed. He’d point out that he had outsold Stephen King in the UK. He was a bestselling author which I think also meant that he felt he wasn’t getting the attention that he deserved. He wanted the things he wasn’t getting. He wanted...

Author and master of the horror genre whose trademark was fear
When James Herbert published his first novel, The Rats (1974), at the age of 30, it was an immediate bestseller. Copies of the book – produced cheaply in paperback with a vicious-looking rodent on the cover, its jaws open and eyes bloodshot – flew off the shelves, the initial print run of 100,000 selling out in three weeks. Behind its cover star, the title was printed in bold, red type. Edition after edition came out and changes were subtly made. The rat remained but eventually it was the name of Herbert, who has died aged 69, that dominated the cover.
Herbert's early novels were literary nasties. The Rats opens with a tramp being devoured alive. Soon afterwards, a baby is killed and partly eaten before her mother can rescue the mutilated body. The Fog (1975) continued his uncompromisingly explicit, visceral exploration of horror. Innocent villagers and...

14 year old Maisie Williams stars alongside Suranne Jones in the BBC One adaptation of James Herbert's best-selling ghost story The Secret of Crickley Hall.
Maisie (represented by Louise Johnston Management) has received much acclaim for her screen debut portrayal of Arya in Game of Thrones, which is back for a second series in April.
The Secret of Crickley Hall tells the story of family who move to Crickley Hall to start a new life after their son goes missing. But they quickly discover the building is haunted and events there begin to terrorise them.
Written and directed by Joe Ahearne, this three-part drama is a modern day ghost story especially for Halloween. Told in a dual timeframe, it is full of scares yet underpinned by the heart-breaking story of a family needing to heal and ghosts who need to be laid to rest.

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Ann Arbor Film Festival and they’re preparing an all-out blowout on March 27 to April 1 to celebrate! The fest is crammed to the gills with the latest and greatest in experimental and avant-garde film, in addition to a celebration of classic work from Ann Arbors past.
Filmmaker Bruce Baillie was there at the first Aaff — and numerous times since. He’s back this year with a major retrospective of his entire career that spans three separate programs. Baillie, who’ll be in attendance of course, will present a brand-new restored version of his epic pseudo-Western Quick Billy, plus screenings of his classic short movies such as Castro Street, Yellow Horse, Quixote, To Parsifal and more.
There’s also a program dedicated to the films of the late Robert Nelson, including Bleu Shut and Special Warning, as well as sprinklings of underground classics throughout...

After reading Tim Curran's Resurrection, I simply had to interview him. I Really loved his book, even at 666 pages (yep, you read that right – 666). Curran is a wonderful storyteller who really should be unleashed upon the general horror reading public sooner rather than later.
Read on for an in-depth look into the beautifully twisted mind of Tim Curran.
El: First off, Wow!! You put everything And the kitchen sink into Resurrection (review here). Best zombie novel I've read in quite a while! How did the book come into being?
Tc: I read somewhere about a mudslide in California. It washed out a cemetery and the coffins and corpses, skeletons and tombstones ended up in the town itself. Coffins came crashing through picture windows. Cadavers were deposited on porches and in trees, tombstones ended up in front yards. Some woman suffered a fatal heart attack when a casket came through...

The last time a novel by Michael Ondaatje was adapted for the big screen, things went fairly well. That, of course, was The English Patient, Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-hoovering epic drama. And now producer Paul Maslansky is hoping that lightning will strike twice with his adaptation of Ondaatje’s novel about the birth of jazz, Coming Through Slaughter.Maslansky first optioned the property three years ago, but finally has a script that’s good to go, by Mark Bailey, which has been given the green light by Ondaatje. Maslansky’s production partner, Lars Bloch, is currently in Venice looking for distributors and potential directors. If it goes ahead, Coming Through Slaughter – which follows the life story of Buddy Bolden, a New Orleans-bazed cornettist credited with being a major player in the birth of what is widely hailed as the only American-created art form – will stick out like a sore thumb on Maslansky’s CV.
