Yes’ Prog-Rock Classic — Now Even Proggier!
Image
Together with Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and Genesis’ Foxtrot, Yes’ 1972 masterpiece Close to the Edge is probably the most fully realized album in progressive rock. It captures the band during an incredible (if fleeting) creative peak, and perfectly sums up the prog ethos; its lofty ideals and natural attraction towards the whimsical and cinematic. At its best, Seventies prog aspired to develop a universal musical language that drew equally from classical and the blues, folk and jazz, psychedelia and Eastern mysticism.

Just like The Beatles before them,...

Yes Drummer Bill Bruford Quit Music Over a Decade Ago. At 75, He’s Back Behind the Kit
Image
To many progressive rock fans, Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson represent the holy trinity of the genre. And the only person freakishly talented enough to log time in all three of them is drummer Bill Bruford, who pulled off the feat between 1972 and 1976. “I’m also the guy who left all three of those bands,” Bruford jokes with Rolling Stone via Zoom from his home in Surrey, England. “I’m famous for leaving bands.”

More recently, Bruford became famous for leaving music altogether. He stopped playing drums even for fun...

The Justice League's New Leader Replaces Batman as DC's Top Dog
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Justice League Unlimited #1The Justice League is back in action after a prolonged hiatus, and its roster has expanded to include every superhero - which means there must be a leader to unify them. Most may expect a popular character like Batman to fill that position, but instead, a lesser-known hero has stepped up to succeed as the Justice League's new leader: Red Tornado.

In Justice League Unlimited #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher, the reformed Justice League has assembled in the Watchtower to commence their operations, and the Flash gives newcomer Air Wave a tour of the base's facilities. As he races through the space station at super-speed, he surprises Air Wave by revealing that Red Tornado is in charge of assigning missions to heroes.

Rather than having Batman call the shots, DC has made the bold choice to enlist a...

Yes Singer Jon Davison ‘Deeply Hurt’ Over ‘Frivolous’ Copyright Claim
Image
Jon Davison, the lead singer of the legendary progressive-rock band Yes since 2012, is firing back at a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed last week over the group’s 2021 single “Dare to Know.” In a lengthy statement posted on the band’s website today, Davison says the new legal claim from fellow prog-rock musician Riz Story — someone he says he previously considered a friend — is an “utterly fictitious” and “defamatory” attempt at a “shakedown.”

“While my initial reaction is to say nothing in the face of these blatant lies and this frivolous lawsuit,...

Image
A new lawsuit alleges members of the legendary progressive rock band Yes used a composition stolen from fellow prog-rock musician Riz Story as the basis for “Dare to Know,” the second single off Yes’ 2021 album The Quest.

The copyright infringement complaint, filed Wednesday in Los Angeles and obtained by Rolling Stone, alleges Jon Davison, the lead singer of Yes since 2012, conspired with guitarist Steve Howe to pilfer protected portions from a song titled “Reunion.” While “Reunion” hasn’t been released as a standalone song, it was featured in A Winter Rose,...

Richie Castellano is living the dream of every pro musician: He’s going on tour with one of his favorite artists.

Castellano’s group, the Band Geeks, are hitting the road alongside Jon Anderson, the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Yes. Anderson discovered Castellano’s gang of geeks after the band published a cover of the Yes track “Close to the Edge” on Castellano’s YouTube channel.

The cover in question arrived on YouTube in 2018. “Close to the Edge” is a technically demanding, 18-minute epic, and the Band Geeks rose to the challenge. Their performance of “Close to the Edge,” which displays their virtuosity on their respective instruments, has received more than 500,000 views to date.

Anderson was one of those viewers. After watching the Band Geeks’ cover, the longtime Yes frontman phoned up Castellano to ask if he was interested in a collaboration. “They were quite amazing,...

Where to Next? Predicting Beyoncé’s Act III

Green Arrow Has 1 Trick Arrow That Can Beat Superman (& It's Not Kryptonite)
Image
Green Arrow's trick arrows are legendary, with unconventional options like the Boxing Glove Arrow and Mind-Reading Arrow standing out among the most memorable. However, there is one arrow in Oliver Queen's quiver that is much more powerful than anything else he has. In Justice League of America #65, Green Arrow unveils his most destructive arrow: the Atomic Warhead Arrow. While a Kryptonite arrow can harm Superman, the Atomic Warhead Arrow also has the potential to cause serious damage to the Man of Steel.

One trademark of DC's Green Arrow is his absurd numbers of trick arrows. Ollie has used Boxing Glove Arrows, Iron-Lung Arrows, Mind-Reading Arrows, and even Kryptonite Arrows in his time fighting crime. Some readers might assume the Kryptonite arrow is the only arrow Oliver has in his arsenal that could harm Superman – but it turns out Oliver has one rarely-used arrow that could take down the Man of Steel.

16 Most Powerful Justice League Heroes No-One Remembers
Image
The Justice League recruit only the best and brightest heroes to join their ranks, with icons like Wonder Woman, Flash, Batman, and Superman representing heroism on a near-godlike level. 15 Greatest Justice League Members Who Joined in the 90s (Ranked)
Image
The Justice League is one of the most powerful super-teams in comics, boasting a line-up of the greatest heroes in the DC Universe. The 1990s was a big decade for the team in particular, seeing them become one of DC’s biggest-selling titles, and some new heroes were influential to reach these new heights.

By the time the 1990’s rolled around, the Justice League was having something of an identity crisis. The Justice League International years that saw the title swerve into a more humorous direction had played itself out, and DC’s premiere super-team struggled to find a new identity. All of that changed in 1996, however, when Grant Morrison and Howard Porter revamped the super-team into Jla, which brought back the classic line-up of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman and paired them with the next-generation heroes like Kyle Rayner and Wally West. The title shot up the sales charts...

Yes Refuses To Reunite With Singer Jon Anderson. He’s Ok With That

But when illness forced him off the road after the group’s 2004 tour, Yes decided to hire a replacement vocalist and carry on without him. Anderson has been healthy and active for well over a decade, but the band — which now features Seventies guitarist Steve Howe, Drama-era keyboardist Geoff Downes, and hired guns — refuses to take him back.

The Future of Classic Rock Tours: One or Two Surviving Members…or None?
Image
In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.

With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Dwayne Johnson has long promised that “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change” with his movie “Black Adam.” Now that it’s finally released in theaters…will it change anything?

The post-credits scene certainly hopes so. Fans had long been clamoring for Johnson’s super-strong villain to face off against another all-powerful DC hero: Henry Cavill’s Superman. Yes Guitarist Steve Howe Preps First Solo Album in Nine Years
Steve Howe and Yes
Yes guitarist Steve Howe has teamed up with the band’s current frontman, vocalist Jon Davison, for Love Is, his first solo album since 2011. It will arrive in stores on July 31st.

“I called the album Love Is because it hints at the central idea that love is important but also love of the universe and the ecology of the world is very important,” Howe said in a statement. “Alexander Humboldt went around the world and recognized we are destroying the planet, but that was 200 years ago! We are still destroying the planet and,...

Annie Clark
Musicians on Musicians: St. Vincent & Kirk Hammett
Annie Clark
Although it may not be obvious from her intricate art-rock albums, Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, is a huge Metallica fan. In fact, they inspired her to pick up a guitar in the first place. Clark was a 10-year-old violin player in Dallas when she first heard Metallica, and she immediately tried to play their heavy melodies on her instrument.

“I was like, ‘The violin fucking stinks,’” she says. Clark switched instruments and even played bass in a Metallica cover band as a teen. So she was psyched...

Rick Wakeman on His Tumultuous History With Yes, Playing on Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’
When Yes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, the surviving members of the band lined up behind a podium at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and delivered the sorts of speeches you’d expect from veteran musicians who had waited decades for this moment of validation. Frontman Jon Anderson thanked departed Yes members Chris Squire and Peter Banks, 1980s-era guitarist Trevor Rabin thanked his wife and son, drummer Alan White paid tribute to the fans, and guitarist Steve Howe read prepared remarks about how the...

Jon Anderson on His New Solo Album, Why He’s Ready for a Yes Reunion
Jon Anderson
Twenty-nine years ago, Yes lead singer Jon Anderson abandoned a half-finished solo album called Uzlot that he’d been been recording in Big Bear, California, with his bandmates Chris Squire and Alan White. Yes were gearing up for a massive reunion tour and he simply put the master tapes in his garage and gave them very little thought as the years started racing by. But just a couple of years ago, producer Michael Franklin reached out to Anderson to see if he’d let him take the tapes and finish the album.

Anderson originally called the project Uzlot, but now that it’s finally done, he’s calling it 1,000 Hands. It comes out March 31st.

Phony Ppl: Rise of a Progressive Soul Force
“I was in trouble,” singer-rapper Elbee Thrie says, recalling the day that his band — the Brooklyn progressive-r&B quintet Phony Ppl — was born in 2008. It was Thrie’s 16th birthday, and he was grounded, stuck at home. So Thrie invited over some teenage friends from his Crown Heights neighborhood — all musicians.

“I knew something was gonna be good about that day,” insists the singer, whose real name is Robert Booker. “I called my friends to come over, and we started playing. It wasn’t even a matter of ‘Oh, what are we going to do?...

Flashback: The Buggles Join Yes and Prog Chaos Ensues
Trevor Horn
The Buggles could have gone in a lot of different directions once their debut single “Video Killed the Radio Star” became a huge hit all over the world in late 1979. The synth duo (featuring Trevor Horn on lead vocals and Geoff Downes on keyboards) could have spent the next couple of years touring the world to to capitalize on their new fame. They could have headed right back into the studio and tried to craft an even poppier song. They could have even gone their separate ways under the assumption...

Last Weekend (2014)
‘Blade Runner’ Box Office Deja Vu as ‘2049’ Starring Ryan Gosling Falls Short
Last Weekend (2014)
Thirty-five years after the Ridley Scott sci-fi original (which was not an initial box office success but grew into a cult favorite), the long-aborning sequel “Blade Runner: 2049” had much to recommend it: rave reviews, Denis Villeneuve directing his follow-up to sci-fi Oscar-winner “Arrival”; Ryan Gosling’s first wide release since “La La Land”; a committed multi-generational smart sci-fi fan base.

So why did the movie fall short of expectations? It was expected to score at least $40 million domestically against a $155-185-million budget: $31 million marks a serious under-performer and suggests that to the extent that Villeneuve channeled the original, he may have delivered an artistic achievement that is not mainstream.

With most of the world outside Asia already playing the film, the initial foreign $81 million take will not yield $300-million worldwide — which is close to what the movie cost to make and market (shared by Alcon Entertainment and financier...
