Robert Picardo is enjoying a major return to form these days. The 71-year-old actor is back with the franchise after two-plus decades away. He'll make his live-action return to the franchise with the expected 2026 debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, reprising his role of The Doctor, once again. It's a role that he's awfully familiar with, having played the character for nearly 200 episodes.

He appeared in 164 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, and 17 more episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy. The latter of which was his first return to the franchise since Voyager ended in 2001. Though, with Prodigy and unlike Starfleet Academy, this wasn't live action. Instead, he returned to Star Trek to perform a voice role for the first time in years.

Prior to Prodigy, the last time he leant his voice to the franchise was for Star Trek Online in 2014.

Star Trek: Discovery's season one didn't earn any points with fans when it debuted its reconstructed Klingons that looked nothing like the ones we were used to seeing. And even though Mary Chieffo, who portrayed L'Rell, on Discovery said the Klingons belonged to a different, ancient sect, fans just weren't buying it because the Klingons looked like completely different aliens. Fortunately, they didn't hang around past season two, and we haven't seen them since. And it looks like it might stay that way.

In the Star Trek: Lower Decks' season five episode, "A Farewell to Arms," Chieffo returns as the Klingon K'Elarra, and the animated Klingon is as close to a Star Trek: The Next Generation Klingon as could be. In the "Star Trek: Picard" series finale "The Last Generation", the villain was exploded and most of the heroes were rescued. Tragically, the cantankerous-but-resolute Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) was killed on board his ship, the Titan-a, inspiring a wave of ambivalence from his first officer, Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Seven was never respected by Captain Shaw; he felt her Borg implants made her an enemy and he would always deadname her, calling her the name she had before she was assimilated.

After Captain Shaw's death, however. Seven was put in command of the Titan-a on his posthumous recommendation (he left a recording). The ship was re-christened the Enterprise-g and "Picard" ended with a tease of a spinoff series starring Ryan. "Star Trek: Picard" showrunner Terry Matalas made no secrets that he was deliberately using the final episode to tease an additional "Star Trek" spinoff he intended to call "Star Trek: Legacy.

It's not surprising that the subject of Star Trek: Legacy would come up at a convention that includes the stars of the potential series. That happened at Spacecon in San Antonio, TX with a panel that included Star Trek: Picard's Michelle Hurd who played Raffi Musiker on Star Trek: Picared. Paramount+ unveiled a preview clip of the forthcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds at New York Comic Con today, alongside the news that guest star Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) would be aboard for the ride.

Based on the years Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the CBS Studios-produced series follows the leader and his team, which features Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.

With season 1 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy still in production, the latest installment in the Star Trek franchise has been renewed for a second season by Paramount+. The early pickup was announced by Star Trek universe steward Alex Kurtzman, executive producer, co-showrunner and director of Starfleet Academy, on a livestream from the series’ Toronto set during the Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic-Con on Saturday.

Also revealed during the panel was that Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) has been tapped as a recurring special guest star in Season 1. No description of her character was provided.

On the livestream, Kurtzman was joined by Starfleet cast members Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner. The series’ ensemble also includes Paul Giamatti, Holly Hunter and Oded Fehr.

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has been renewed for Season 2 at Paramount+ before Season 1 even has a premiere date.

The announcement was made as part of the “Star Trek” Universe panel at New York Comic-Con on Saturday. It was also announced at the panel that “Orphan Black” alum Tatiana Maslany is set to appear in Season 1 of the Paramount+ series in a guest star role. The exact details of the character she will be playing are being kept under wraps.

“Star Trek” mainstay Robert Picardo made a surprise appearance at the panel to introduce a livestream from the set of Season 1 of “Starfleet Academy.” In the livestream, co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman announced to the cast that the show had been renewed.

The official logline for the series states that it “will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.

The animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” premiered a new clip from its forthcoming final season at New York Comic Con, showcasing the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos pursuing its Season 5 mission: closing “space potholes” — and meeting alternate versions of themselves as they cross through one of those subspace rifts.

The comedic yet still in-continuity show set in the wider “Star Trek” universe features the ship’s junior officers working to stop these dimensional breaks from causing problems in the Alpha Quadrant this season. According to an official description, “Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all — their own career aspirations.”

The show teases that Season 5 could feature its lowly crew getting promoted out of the titular lower decks “into strange new Starfleet roles.

Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike know that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) referred to the U.S.S. Enterprise's chief medical officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) as "Bones." The two characters were good friends, so it made sense that they should have nicknames for each other. Indeed, Dr. McCoy more frequently referred to Kirk as "Jim" than "Captain." Among the senior staff, non-mission-based conversations were kept casual.

Why was Dr. McCoy called "Bones?" It comes from "Old Sawbones," a nickname given to all doctors in the mid-19th century. During various wars of the era, you see, doctors were frequently called to the front to tend to wounded soldiers. In many cases, the soldiers' wounds were not being treated, and became infected with gangrene. Doctors, not having modern surgical equipment or sterilization methods, had to amputate limbs to prevent the infections from spreading. Some doctors were able to saw through a leg — no anesthesia!

Star Trek was on the verge of something unique with Noah Hawley at the helm. Originally brought in after the failings of Star Trek: Beyond, Hawley was given the reigns to create a new Star Trek film. Everything seemed to be going fine to boot, yet eventually, executives at Paramount didn't like how "original" his idea was and took the project away from him.

We're still left a little uncertain about the premise of the film, but there were rumors that it would feature a brand new cast of characters. That may have been a tough enough sell, but apparently another major obstacle for him to get past was the alleged storyline. It would feature a virus that carved it's way through the Federation.

Paramount+ today debuted the official trailer for the fifth and final season of its hit animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks. The fifth and final season will premiere on Paramount+ with two episodes on Thursday, October 24, in the U.S. and internationally.

Star Trek has been quite different since 2017 when Star Trek: Discovery launched. Star Trek: Picard followed, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and they all offered something different to fans and new viewers. Not all original Trek fans were enthused, but there is one series that has been consistently well-received, and even when cancelled by Paramount+, it found a home at the biggest streaming channel, Netflix, because of fan devotion. Here's why this is so important for the future of Star Trek.

We don't know what's around the corner. Will Alex Kurtzman continue to head up the franchise? According to the most recent deal he inked with CBS Studios in 2021 [via Deadline], he'll be leading Star Trek until 2027 or so. But that doesn't mean authority can't be handed over to someone else who maybe has a different outlook on Trek and where to go from here.

Star Trek fans are desperate for a sequel to Star Trek: Picard. There was an idea floated out there by Terry Matalas, who envisioned a new show centered around Seven of Nine and Jack Crusher, the biological son of Jean-Luc Picard. It would feature several other characters like Sidney La Forge and maybe a few other veterans of the Star Trek franchise.

In essence, it would be the first continuation of Star Trek stories since Picard and would remain one of the few shows that actually advanced the plot forward. Most shows, like Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds, all fall in between other established shows in the universe.

Yet, this sequel series, dubbed Sar Trek: Legacy, would be the furthest point in the timeline, aside from the forthcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (and later seasons of Discovery). It would be a fun new idea that many fans are excited about.

Star Trek has not had the best go of it with Alex Kurtzman at the helm. In what can only be seen as a nepotism hire, it looked like J.J. Abrams gifted him the job following his foray into the Star Trek film franchise. Since then, Kurtzman has done a mediocre job with the franchise. The longer he goes with the franchise, the more people question his methods and motives.

In a lot of ways, his timeline with Star Trek mirrors that of his friend Greg Berlanti and Berlanti's run with the DC television properties on the CW. A series of shows dubbed "The Arrowverse". With the end of Superman and Lois this year, a lot of people were left disappointed in how a promising show like Arrow turned out to be a tragically underwhelming franchise.

No matter who you ask, most fans will tell you that they are largely unsatisfied with the direction of the Star Trek franchise. Whether they're unhappy with the direction of some shows, or the lack of sincerity in others, or even the dark tone that some writers are desperate to "explore", many fans will tell you that the franchise as a whole isn't where it should be.

That's not wholly unfair either, as it's a lack of overall interest in the Star Trek brand that saw a long-awaited show in Star Trek: Section 31, get shrunk down to a single, 90-minute film that went straight to streaming. This isn't a direct shot at the entire franchise, as shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can still pull in the viewers, but they're just about the only ones.

No other show has been able to pull in viewers, routinely, across 10 weeks.

Star Trek: Picard had quite a bit of the Borg in the series, which made sense as that was one of Admiral Picard's [Patrick Stewart] worst enemies. So having him face off again against the Collective, that had turned him into Locutus, was a great part of the show. But the large showing of the Borg was originally because, before Stewart had signed on to do Picard, the show being pitched was a Borg spin-off.

Jonathan Del Arco, who played Hugh in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Picard, talked to Trekmovie about his time on Picard and how his participation in the series came about. And surprisingly, Del Arco said he met with Alex Kurtzman, executive producer James Duff, and another writer to talk about the show, and Duff really wanted it to be a Borg spin-off.

Despite being one of the oldest characters in Star Trek history, Captain Christopher Pike wasn't really a compelling character until Anson Mount took the role in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. Even then, it has taken Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for Pike to really come into his own as a likable, inspirational lead character. Part of this is because he's not exactly like previous versions of Pike.

Captain Pike first appeared in the original Star Trek pilot episode, "The Cage." Portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter, this Pike was irritable and brooding. He was not only isolated from his crew but openly adversarial with various members. While "The Cage" is an interesting episode overall, it is reasonable to say that this Captain Pike is not really all that fun to watch.

The last time Trekkies saw Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in live-action was via a video call to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." In animation, however, we've been spoiled with the volume of Janeway in recent years. In "Star Trek: Prodigy," a holographic version of Janeway, also played by Mulgrew, served as an ersatz mother figure for the show's teenage protagonists. The real-world Janeway also eventually became involved in the action, and she too was impressed with Dal (Brett Grey), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens, to the point where she helps them apply to Starfleet Academy. In the show's second and final season, Janeway even lead a quest to rescue her old first officer, Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and brought the "Prodigy" kids along.

Paramount took to social media to announce that production has begun on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and no one looks more thrilled than Paul Giamatti. The “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series at Paramount+ has added Sandro Rosta to its cast.

Production on the series will begin later this month. Rosta will appear as a cadet in the series alongside previously announced cast members Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner. It was also previously announced that Holly Hunter will star as the captain and chancellor of the academy, with Paul Giamatti set to play the season’s villain.

In addition, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman will reprise their roles from previous “Star Trek” shows in the series. Gina Yashere will appear as recurring guest star.

Rosta is a recent graduate of the Oxford School of Drama. He recently made his professional debut in “The Harmony Test” at Hampstead Theatre. While in school, he starred in plays like “Romeo & Juliet,” “The Cherry Orchard,” and “The Watsons” at Jermyn Street Theatre.

After failing to meet box office expectations with his 2023 reimagining of Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” it seems things are starting to sour between writer/director Justin Simien and the House of Mouse. The filmmaker was set to helm a series for Disney+ centered around a young version of “Star Wars” favorite Lando Calrissian played by Donald Glover, but in a recent interview with Collider, Simien shared how despite a plethora of materials being produced, the studio chose to can the project.

“It was pretty developed,” Simien said. “Yeah, there was a Bible, there was concept art, there were scripts, but it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Despite the emotional toll of dropping the project, Simien told Collider that processing the loss and recognizing what he gained in the process allowed him to move forward with grace.

The cast of the upcoming “Star Trek: Section 31,” a direct-to-streaming Paramount+ film starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Richardson (“The Afterparty”), Omari Hardwick (“Power”) and Kacey Rohl (“The Magicians”), stopped by Variety Studio, presented by Google TV, at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.

Richardson, Hardwick and Rohl were joined by director Olatunde Osunsanmi and executive producer Alex Kurtzman to talk about the franchise’s upcoming interstellar venture.

A spin-off from the series “Star Trek: Discovery,” the film follows Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) as she works with Section 31, a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets.

“The movie is a lot of things. It’s action, drama, comedy, it’s equal parts all of that,” said Richardson, who plays a Quasi, a shapeshifting chameloid. “So, it’s not just up to Quasi to be funny, everybody’s funny in it, and everybody’s serious and the stakes are there for everybody.

“Star Trek: Prodigy” dropped its second season on Netflix on July 1, and series star Kate Mulgrew is holding out hope the animated series will be renewed for Season 3.

Fresh off her appearance at the “Prodigy” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Mulgrew said the energy in the panel’s ballroom was “electric.”

“I had a full auditorium on Sunday morning for the panel,” she said. “They were thrilled. They were delighted! They’re desperate for this kind of television. I don’t think there’s anything quite like it on television now, because it’s teaching ‘Star Trek’ to a new generation to young children in an entirely novel way.”

Paramount+ Drops Teaser Trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season Five...

During a whirlwind panel at San Diego Comic-Con, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau made several casting announcements for their upcoming spin-off, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” including the return of franchise veterans Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr, and Mary Wiseman as series regulars. Picardo reprises his role as The Doctor from “Star Trek: Voyager,” while Notaro, Fehr, and Wiseman will be back as Jett Reno, Admiral Charles Vance, and Sylvia Tilly from “Star Trek: Discovery.”

The newest cast members join Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti, who were announced earlier this year as primary cast members. Hunter will play the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, where the a fresh group of cadets are in training. Last month, it was announced that Giamatti would be playing the first season’s primary villain.

The trailer for season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks goes hard into celebrating the series’ final episodes. It even recreates a trailer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the last adventure of The Original Series crew.

But even as it acknowledges that studio Paramount has chosen to cancel the show after season five, the trailer also insists that the USS Cerritos will continue to boldly go where more respected Starfleet vessels went first. As Mariner says in the trailer, “We haven’t even cracked our second quadrant!”

More than just a standard knowing joke, Mariner’s observation reveals the actual hopes of Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan. In fact, McMahan said as much during the Lower Decks panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

According to SFX Magazine, McMahan told attendees that the fifth season wouldn’t offer closure for Mariner, Boimler, and the other members of the Cerritos crew.
