Gladiators, suit up: The “Scandal” rewatch podcast, “Unpacking the Toolbox,” is set to return with new episodes on April 11.
“Unpacking the Toolbox” is hosted by former “Scandal” stars Katie Lowes (who played Quinn) and Guillermo Díaz (who played Huck) — their Irl friendship was forged on set, and fans nicknamed their twisted on-screen partnership Huckleberry Quinn.
Part of the iHeartPodcasts network, the Shondaland Audio series “Unpacking the Toolbox” — a reference to Huck’s torture kit — hit pause during the SAG-AFTRA strike, having covered the first two seasons of Shonda Rhimes’ ABC drama, which ran for seven seasons from 2012 through 2018.
“Scandal” revolved around Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, a D.C. fixer who also happened to be having an affair with the very married President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). The series was a slow burn for ABC, ratings-wise, but midway through its second season, its delightfully batshit plotting and wild weekly cliffhangers caught on with audiences,...

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Best Actor looks set to be one of the most intriguing Oscar races this year with Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) currently battling it out at the top of our odds chart in this category.
Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) are also predicted to reap nominations but it is Bradley Cooper in third spot that makes things really interesting. Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro,” which he also produces, directs and co-writes. The Netflix feature, which opens on November 22, explores the complex marriage between the renowned composer and his wife Felicia Montealegre, who is played by Carey Mulligan. Mulligan is, as always, excellent, but Cooper has the transformative role here.
Makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turns him into Bernstein with astounding makeup and prosthetics. Cooper’s mannerisms, gestures, and vocal work prove add to his performance.

It’s rare for sequels to make a big splash on the awards circuit; only two have ever won best picture — “The Godfather: Part II” and “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” But director Rian Johnson’s star-studded feature “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is proving to be an exception, with the filmmaker taking home the Visionary Award for his work on the upcoming whodunnit movie at this year’s 12th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards.

“It’s quite the stereotype, that all of Africa is one big safari,” says actress and The Woman King producer and writer Maria Bello, who lives part-time each year in Kenya. Across Africa there’s constantly something new to discover and uncover, with many places still feeling off the beaten path. While filming The Woman King in South Africa, Viola Davis’ makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera felt “what everybody talks about when it comes to Africa — there’s a connection to the planet that, as a 55-year-old man who’s traveled the world, I’ve never found before. Ensuring that hair and makeup departments are inclusive in their ability to work effectively with actors of color will be explored during a virtual panel discussion next month hosted by the Producers Guild of America in collaboration with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the Gersh talent agency and Management 360. The panel, “Hair and Makeup Equity – Changing the Industry Standard,” is set for May 11.
“As Hollywood fights for equitable representation on screen, one historically large issue of production can no longer be ignored: the lack of proficient hair and makeup artists on set,” said Management 360 manager Genevieve Penn. “Hair and makeup departments that don’t serve every member of the cast at the same level are detrimental to both the talent and the production. Having hair and makeup artists who are not trained to work with all skin tones and hair textures can cause irreparable damage, undermine the actor’s sense of...

After an insane, unpredictable and incredibly long season, the 93rd Academy Awards are finally behind us! Considering how awards ceremonies have been mostly held remotely since last year’s Oscars due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I think we were all plenty grateful that we got winners accepting their awards in-person. But like every year, there were some speeches that stood out as being particularly memorable. Some, like Mia Neal, paid tribute to the shattering of a glass ceiling, and others were filled with emotion from great tragedy like Thomas Vinterberg. With that in mind, here are the six best speeches from this year’s telecast. Do you agree with our picks? Let us know in the comments below.

Chloé Zhao becomes only second woman in history to win best director
Oscar favourite Nomadland and UK talent triumphed at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday (April 25) as the most protracted season, and one shaped by the pandemic, came to an end.
Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland was named best picture and also scored wins for Asian American best director Chloé Zhao – who became the first woman of colour and only the second woman in history to win the award after Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010 – and lead actress Frances McDormand, who competed in a particularly close contest.

What was marketed as “what if the Oscars were a movie?” — the end result was more like, “What if the Oscars were a glossy version of the Golden Globes but with more Black people in attendance?”
In an unconventional year, the Oscars delivered an unconventional ceremony, making history, and even rearranging the show so that the biggest prize of best picture wasn’t handed out last. This small tweak undid an aesthetically rich ceremony and made it into a jaw-dropping and ill-advised decision to end the evening on best actress and actor, which saw Frances McDormand win her third acting (and fourth overall after winning best picture) for “Nomadland,” and Anthony Hopkins winning his second Oscar for “The Father” over presumed frontrunner Chadwick Boseman for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
I sounded the alarms early on that Hopkins and “The Father” were surging in the middle of final Oscars voting. To...

When Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera won the Oscar on Sunday for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Neal and Wilson became the first Black women to win the honor. When Neal took the stage at Union Station to accept the award, she used the opportunity to give shine to other Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, queer, trans and everyone in the margins, saying of her monumental win: “One day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it’ll just be normal.”
That describes the energy when it comes to diversity in film and TV as of late. As Hollywood and the Oscars attempt to move into a space of inclusivity and authentic representation, we celebrate “firsts,” but as people in the margins have said and will continue to say: “We still have a long way to go.” The real question is:...

Seventy women representing a record 76 Oscar nominations translated to a record number of female wins Sunday with 17 awards, beating a previous high of 15 set in 2019 and running the gamut from Best Director and Best Picture to Original Screenplay, Animated Film and Original Song.
The 2019 Oscars, for films out in 2018, had the same number of women winners but fewer awards. Two of the nominees, Chloé Zhao and Frances McDormand took home two awards each — all for Nomadland. This year’s awards were also more prominent. Winners from both years included the two acting awards.
“What an incredible night full of firsts for women,” said Kirsten Schaffer, executive director of Women In Film, LA, calling the night “a great celebration of talent and an inspiration for all of the women who work in the screen industries especially those behind the camera.”

Netflix had a big night at the Oscars, bringing home a total of seven total trophies — leading all studios — although the streamer failed to grab the prize in the best picture category and came up empty in the acting categories.
Netflix had come into Sunday night with 36 nominations, far more than any other studio.
The company’s wins at the 93rd Academy Awards included two Oscars for David Fincher’s “Mank,” the most-nominated film this year with 10 nods, for cinematography (for Erik Messerschmidt) and production design (for Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale).
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” adapted from the play by August Wilson, also picked up two Oscars: for makeup and hairstyling (with Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson the first Black women to win in the category alongside Sergio Lopez-Rivera) and costume design (Ann Roth). The 2021 Oscars were unlike any that came before, coming amid the Covid-19 pandemic that dramatically affected the entire film industry for well over a year. So the awards were already historic before any awards were handed out. But there was plenty of history up for grabs among the potential winners. Scroll down for our live blog breaking down all the results throughout the night. And check out the complete list of winners here.

Every Oscar night is always rife with history-making twists, but early in the 93rd annual ceremony on Sunday night, a rare two-for-one win made double history. In accepting the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” hair department head Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, star Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, became the first Black women to win an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling. Neal and Wilson first made history in March when they became the first Black women to be nominated in the category.
Alongside fellow winner Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Davis’ personal makeup artist, the trio happily accepted the honor for their big screen August Wilson adaptation. Backstage at the in-person ceremony, the three artisans were still giddy and more than thrilled to talk about what the history-making win means for the industry going forward.

The makeup and hairstyling team for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson, and Sergio Lopez-Rivera — have taken the Oscar in the category, an historic win as Neal and Wilson are the first Black nominees to take the award in the space.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” hair department head Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, Viola Davis’ personal hairstylist, have become the first Black women to win an Oscar for makeup and hairstyling.
Neal and Wilson won alongside Sergio Lopez-Rivera, Davis’ personal makeup artist. They beat out Mark Coulier, Dalia Colli and Francesco Pegoretti for “Pinocchio”; “Emma’s” Marese Langan, Laura Allen and Claudia Stolze; Kimberley Spiteri, Gigi Williams and Colleen Labaff for “Mank”; and “Hillbilly Elegy’s” Eryn Krueger Mekash, Patricia Dehaney and Matthew Mungle.
The award was created by the Academy in 1981 after the 1980 film “The Elephant Man” was not recognized. Neal and Wilson first made history in March when they became the first Black women to be nominated in the category.

Good news: There are 41 feature films nominated for Oscars this year. Better news: The 93rd Academy Awards are Sunday, so there’s still time to watch some of the movies before the biggest night in Hollywood.
“Mank” leads all films with 10 nominations, with “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” in a six-way tie for second with six nominations a piece. It’s the most diverse slate of nominees ever, with two women in the directing category for the first time ever (“Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao and “Promising Young Woman” filmmaker Emerald Fennell), and nine of the 20 acting nominations went to people of color.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is the front-runner to win three Oscars, including Best Makeup and Hairstyling, for which Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson, and Sergio Lopez-Rivera are all first-time contenders. Their candidacy is also historic since Neal and Wilson are the first Black nominees in the history of the category.
Neal, Wilson, and Lopez-Rivera are nominated in no small part for transforming Viola Davis into legendary blues singer Ma Rainey, in addition to the 1920s styles for the rest of the cast. Leading up to the Oscars, the film won for its makeup and hair at the BAFTA Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards, not to mention our very own Gold Derby Awards.

When it came time to create the look of legendary singer Ma Rainey for the Netflix film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” star Viola Davis called upon her longtime makeup and hairstyling collaborators Sergio Lopez-Rivera and Jamika Wilson as well as Mia Neal to help her transform.
“Having had six or seven years experience with Viola, I just know that she is willing and ready to go there,” Lopez-Rivera told Gold Derby in a recent interview. “Whatever ‘there’ is. She just needs to have things be as true as possible and as specific as possible. It doesn’t have to be beautiful — as a matter of fact, she’s more interested in the other side.”
He added, “What happens when you work with somebody like Viola is she is giving you permission to be your best.”
For Lopez-Rivera and the hair and makeup team, the freedom they were provided by Davis worked.

When Glenn Close took on the role of Mamaw, the tough but tender grandmother to J.D. Vance in “Hillbilly Elegy,” one of her first calls was to an acclaimed makeup and prosthetics designer. “Team Mamaw started with Matthew Mungle, who had worked with me on ‘Albert Nobbs,’” says Close. “I did not want to see myself when I looked the mirror as Mamaw because I am so different from her in life. I wanted the audience to not see Glenn Close.”
Like Close herself, Mungle is nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film, along with makeup department head Eryn Krueger Mekash and hair department head Patricia Dehaney. Mungle knew he and Close had similar philosophies about prosthetics.

The 2021 British Academy Film Awards are being presented on two nights, with eight categories handed out on Saturday, April 10, and the rest being presented on Sunday, April 11. Check out the complete list of BAFTA champs here.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the most awarded film on Saturday, winning both of its nominations there: Best Costume Design for Ann Roth and Best Makeup and Hair for the team of Matiki Anoff, Larry M. Cherry, Sergio Lopez-Rivera, and Mia Neal. The film has only one other nomination: Best Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman. He stands a good chance of winning that on Sunday, which would give the film a clean sweep, so it’s a little surprising that “Ma Rainey” didn’t get nominations in any other categories.

Host Clara Amfo opened proceedings by paying tribute to the late Prince Philip, who died yesterday at the age of 99. Rocks was the first winner this eve, with Lucy Pardee scooping the award for Casting. The UK indie movie was nominated for a leading seven BAFTAs this year, joint most with Nomadland, which is a hot favorite for the Best Film prize tomorrow.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.
Night 1, hosted virtually by radio and TV presenter Clara Amfo, was a mostly craft-centered affair which also yielded wins for “Mank,” “Tenet” and “Sound of Metal.”
The first show was originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. local time, but according to sources the BBC made a late decision to push the broadcast by an hour. Amfo opened the show by reading a tribute to Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died Friday at the age of 99.
“On behalf of BAFTA, we are extremely saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday. The Duke was BAFTA’s very first president over 60 years ago and was the first of a line of royal patronage all...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

2021 Muah Awards: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ Are Top Makeup, Hairstyling Winners
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” captured the top period feature prizes for makeup and hairstyling at the 8th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night, making it the prohibitive Oscar favorite for the dramatic transformation of Viola Davis as the titular pioneering blues singer. Davis, who landed her fourth Oscar nomination as the sexy, subversive Rainey — the most of any Black actress — was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude for Netflix’s adaptation of the August Wilson play. Davis was fitted with gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair.
Winning both contemporary makeup and hairstyling feature honors at the virtual ceremony was Warner Bros./DC’s “Birds of Prey. He recreated the look of real wooden puppets for the titular hero (played by (Federico Ielapi) and his theater friends by using every prosthetic technique available.

Makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera had the tall task of transforming Viola Davis into the audacious blues singer Ma Rainey in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” With shiny black eyeshadow, thin eyebrows and gold teeth, the stunning makeup work just earned Lopez-Rivera his first Oscar nomination, alongside hairstylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson. “I feel like I’ve been preparing my whole life for a period movie,” says Lopez-Rivera in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “Ma Rainey’s character was an incredibly fun character to design for, given all the markers, all the psychology, all the social, historical facts of that time.” Watch the video interview above.

Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” swept the Latino Entertainment Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards, including best picture, director, cinematography and editing.
The awards, which are voted on and presented by the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, also honored Oscar-nominated actor Rosie Perez with the Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award and the Latino Activism Award. In a pre-taped speech, Perez thanked the Leja and spoke about her work as an activist.
“It’s weird getting an award for it to be quite honest – because I don’t do it for that. I do it just to help make the world a better place for everyone,” Perez said.
“The Prom” and “Hamilton” star Ariana DeBose was given the Latino Breakout Award. “I believe fervently in representation and I’m really proud to be even be a small part of the expansion of how we are viewed in this entertainment industry. We are a vast,...

A version of this story about “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” appears in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera’s relationship of trust with Viola Davis was cultivated over six seasons of “How to Get Away With Murder.” And therefore, in the early days of making “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — starring Davis as the real-life 1920s blues singer — the actress sensed a trace of hesitation in Lopez-Rivera’s hands.
“At that first camera test, I was tweaking the makeup to make Viola look better,” he recalled. “And she said something to me I’ll never forget. She said, simply, ‘Bette Davis in ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?'”
That reference to the 1962 thriller about a grotesque former child actress clicked instantly for Lopez-Rivera. Viola Davis’s Ma Rainey isn’t an unhinged antagonist like Bette Davis’s Baby Jane, but the connection...

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Mia Neal, the hair-department head on “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,’ had to make hundreds of wigs for this Netflix drama based on August Wilson’s 1982 play. As she recalled in a recent conversation with the film’s other hair and make-up artists, Ma Rainey’s horsehair wig was the most challenging (but worth the effort as the team just made the Oscars shortlist).
Ma Rainey, the legendary blues singer played by Viola Davis in the film set in the late 1920s during a particularly contentious recording session in Chicago, wore two wigs. “I used to call one her show wig, which is the wig she performs in and that’s the one made of the horsehair,” she said. “And then the second one is the more finger wave wig she wears as her everyday wig.”
It was costume designer Ann Roth who discovered in her research that Ma quite literally wore a ponytail.

On Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, hair and makeup designers Mia Neal, Sergio Lopez-Rivera and Matiki Anoff worked to transform Viola Davis into the titular Georgia singer known as the “Mother of the Blues,” capturing at the same time the essence of her world, and the racial dynamics of her era.
Directed by George C. Wolfe, the film finds the indomitable trailblazer at a recording session with her band in 1920s Chicago, clashing in studio—with both her white management, and a pushy young trumpeter named Levee (Chadwick Boseman)—over control of her work.
In educating themselves about the only real person depicted in Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s 10-play Century Cycle, hair department head Neal and Davis’s personal makeup artist, Lopez-Rivera, turned to a limited set of period photographs, before digging into Ma Rainey’s psychology, and her experience as a Black artist living through the ’20s.

Viola Davis literally melts into the title role of the blues singer in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a film adaptation of the August Wilson play. Her visage, drenched in sweat and rouge and topped with a wiry wig, becomes one of the most searing images of the film. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with the masterminds — makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera and hairstylist Mia Neal — behind Davis’ transformation into the legendary Ma Rainey about the challenges of bringing the larger-than-life Mother of the Blues to the screen.
