Stars: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Martin Short, Nicole Kidman | Written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick | Directed by James Wan
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is both a direct sequel to 2018’s Aquaman (also directed by Wan) and also the fifteenth and final film in the Dceu (the DC Extended Universe). As such, it does the occasional bit of floundering, but it just about treads water, thanks to a mostly seaworthy plot and suitably salty character work.
The plot picks up a few years after the events of the first film, with Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Momoa) now married to Mera (Amber Heard), raising a young son, Arthur Jr. and dividing his time between ruling as the King of Atlantis (complete with shiny orange armour), and fighting crime on the surface world. However, there’s an old enemy waiting in the wings,...

DC Studios‘ last gasp before James Gunn reboots the Dcu is coming to the Max streaming service later this month. Swimming onto the platform on February 27, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom debuted in theaters last year during the Christmas holiday stretch. Unfortunately, the James Wan-directed Aquaman 2 floated on the surface of the box office like a dead fish, with $123 million domestically and $433 million worldwide. In contrast, Aquaman netted $335M in the United States and $1.1B worldwide. The difference in dollars earned between both films is staggering, with multiple culprits to blame for the film’s failure, including wild on-set rumors, Amber Heard’s legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, and DC jumping the gun on its plans to reboot the Dceu.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Ending Explained: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the closing chapter of Arthur Curry’s journey in the DC Extended Universe (Dceu).
In this movie, Aquaman faces off against his nemesis, Black Manta, who seeks revenge for past events. The film summarizes earlier Dceu movies to ensure it stands alone as a self-contained story.
To prevent any clashes with other upcoming DC movies and TV shows, extensive reshoots were done to align Aquaman 2 with James Gunn’s future projects in the DC Universe.
Despite these changes, the movie concludes Arthur Curry’s storyline in the Dceu before James Gunn’s rebooted franchise begins in 2024.
The central plot revolves around Aquaman’s battle against Black Manta, reaching its climax in the post-credit scene. As the Dceu wraps up with Aquaman 2, audiences are left pondering how the movie’s conclusion ties up the arcs, stories, and emotional...

Back in 2011, DC Comics went through a line-wide re-launch known as ‘New 52,’ which streamlined their releases and revamped the entire overarching narrative to attract newer readers. The re-launch was marked by an unnecessarily edgy sensibility and mistreatment of established characters, which ruined a number of fan favorites and alienated long-time readers in the process. Eventually, the creators had to accept the mistakes involving the re-launch, and another restructuring was done in the form of ‘DC Rebirth’ in 2016, which brought things back to their past state. This is the same situation DC’s cinematic universe has found itself in, as Dceu’s muddled, directionless roadmap has resulted in its end, and Dcu, formed by James Gunn, is about to begin its journey.

DC’s Aquaman 2 is finally in theaters after wading in choppy waters ahead of its release, breaching $4.5M in Thursday preview screenings at the box office. The James Wan-directed sequel debuted at 3,400 locations, with the superhero special-effects fest floating as the most significant tentpole of the holiday season. Interestingly, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is drowning with a review score of 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score fares much better with 76%. We’ve seen divides like this before, adding confusion to the film’s reception.
During its Thursday previews, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is performing worse than The Marvels, which banked $6.6M at the early box office. At least Aquaman 2 is performing better than DC’s previous sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods ($3.4M Thursday night, $11.7M Friday, and 3-day of $30.1M). Meanwhile, the studio’s other film, The Flash, could have performed better with $9.7M in previews,...

The end of an era is upon us. After 10 years, the Dceu as we knew it is coming to an end with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." What started with Zack Snyder and "Man of Steel" is concluding with Jason Momoa's second solo turn as Arthur Curry in order to make way for the forthcoming DC Universe reboot, which is being headed up by James Gunn and Peter Safran. But does that mean it all ends as soon as the credits roll? Or does director James Wan have a little something extra for us?
Credits scenes have been very present in the Dceu, and even though there aren't any more movies to set up in this version of the universe, that doesn't mean a credits scene of some kind can't help put a button on the whole thing. So, can you leave as soon as the credits begin?...

It’s fitting that “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is about a dying world that can’t be bothered to save itself, as this goofy but half-hearted sequel — a damp shadow of James Wan’s deliriously fun 2018 original, which grossed more than a billion dollars at the height of the superhero boom — is the orphaned child of a cinematic universe that was abandoned at sea while this movie was still in the womb. Greenlit at a time when it seemed like Jason Momoa’s Atlantean surf-himbo might be light enough to buoy the rest of the Dceu, “Lost Kingdom” is being released in theaters as the product of a conglomerate that didn’t exist when production began, and under the banner of a newly formed studio that didn’t have any use for it by the time production ended. For DC Films, Aquaman was the future; for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios,...

Brotherly love is hard to come by in the superhero arena. While some siblings live for a good old-fashioned team-up, others often find themselves at opposite ends, clawing their way up the family tree for favoritism and supremacy. When DC‘s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom swims into theaters, Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Orm Marius (Patrick Wilson) must set their differences aside and work together to save a kingdom from Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

Aquaman isn’t the only one with an updated look, as James Wan revealed Orm, who looks more like a buff Cast Away than an Ocean Master – toned, tanned, and shockingly on land.

Warner Bros. has revealed a new trailer for James Wan’s sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time: ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’
Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is arriving in December, bringing Jason Momoa back as Arthur Curry. It's been a full five years since the first "Aquaman" became the biggest DC movie ever. Now, James Wan is back behind the camera for another massive, globe-trotting adventure. Much has been made thus far of Amber Heard's Mera, who will be reprising her role in the sequel, albeit in a more limited capacity. She won't be a main character this time around. As for why that is? Wan has addressed it head-on.
In the December issue of Empire Magazine, the filmmaker spoke about the long-awaited "Aquaman" sequel and, specifically, touched on the Mera situation. During her highly public court case with her ex-husband Johnny Depp, Heard claimed her role in the sequel was a "pared-down version" of what she was originally pitched, and that the studio "didn't want to include her" following the divorce.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will officially bring the Dceu to an end. The film will find Aquaman (Jason Momoa) reluctantly joining forces with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to combat a more powerful Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), which led director James Wan to describe the sequel as a buddy comedy.
While speaking with Empire, James Wan said that he pitched the first Aquaman movie as a Romancing The Stone-type thing, while he always knew that the second would be an “outright buddy comedy” like Tango & Cash or Men in Black. “I wanted to do Tango & Cash!” Wan said. “Jason plays Arthur larger-than-life; Patrick plays the straight man. It’s not unlike what Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones did in Men In Black – like Tommy, Patrick plays it dry, but very funny.”

The first trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was finally released this morning, just months before the sequel is slated to hit theaters. Most everyone has returned to reprise their roles, but there is one notable absence: Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Aquaman’s mentor.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan confirmed that Willem Dafoe will not be making an appearance in the sequel. “Willem is not in this one, no,” Wan said. “Part of the reason was because his schedule did not work out for us. But what that allowed me to do was expand on Atlanna’s role. Atlanna in this one ultimately becomes Arthur’s advisor. Because Arthur’s not from this world, she helps him better understand the world and the politics of how things work.” Nuidis Vulko was a definite highlight of the first Aquaman movie for me,...

Warner Bros. has debuted a new trailer for the sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time: ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.’

The first trailer for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" is here, and that's a reason to celebrate. The original "Aquaman" is one of the highlights of the modern DC movie universe, a goofball spectacle that married traditional superhero thrills with gonzo mythology and a winning, dorky sense of humor. And honestly? I see no reason for the sequel to not double down on all of that. After all, the first movie made a billion bucks. Audiences bought what it was selling. In director James "I Made 'Malignant' And Am Therefore Immortal" Wan we trust.
But like any sequel worth its salt, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" sees its hero up against a wall. Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is back, and he's not the secondary villain this time around. In fact, he seems poised to destroy the all-too-happy kingdom Arthur (Jason Momoa) has built alongside Mera (Amber Heard...

Randall Park is seemingly everywhere nowadays. He’s FBI Agent Jimmy Woo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, popping up in this year’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and the upcoming The Marvels. Over in the DC Extended Universe, you can see his Dr. Stephen Shin, who’ll feature in the Christmas release Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Aquaman, is one of the most anticipated DC movies of 2023. The film will see Jason Momoa return as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, who must face a new threat that could endanger his underwater kingdom and the surface world. However, the film has also faced several challenges and delays during its production, including three rounds of reshoots and constant test screenings. But this may not be a bad thing, as director James Wan has proven before that he can use reshoots to improve his movies and surprise his audiences.
Wan is no stranger to reshoots, as he did the same thing with his 2016 horror hit, The Conjuring 2. In that film, he added the character of the nun, who was the main villain of the movie, in reshoots. He said he was still discovering the design of the demon character while editing...

On first hearing the title, you might guess that this is a Hong Kong adaptation of the much-filmed Edgar Allan Poe story. It is, largely, an adaptation, but not of that. Writer/Director Stephen Shin apparently wanted to do a straight remake of Luc Besson’s Nikita, but the rights weren’t available (because they had already been sold in preparation for John Badham’s Bridget Fonda starring Point of No Return [Aka: The Assassin]). Shin made this instead. He makes some cosmetic changes, but in structure and many specifics, it remains very recognisable. You could say that Shin went from remake to ripoff in his concept of the film. Which isn’t to say it’s bad.

When last we saw Black Manta in 2018's "Aquaman," he was onboard the research vessel of marine biologist Stephen Shin (Randall Park), a glint of vengeance in his eye as he threw his grandfather's knife into a newspaper silhouette of Arthur Curry. With Warner Bros.' big budget sequel "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" having just completed filming and set for release this time next year, we can now freely speculate on how big a presence Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Manta will be in the next installment.

Within movies, there are formulas that you will expect to be followed. So, if one begins with a couple in a relationship then it is highly likely at some point during the running time they will break up. If it’s a romantic comedy, then ninety-nine times out of a hundred this will result in a happy resolution come the final credits. This takes us to “Heart Against Hearts” and begins with Alex and Judy happily engaged……hmm am I detecting some déjà vu here? I wonder what could possibly happen here and should I have reviewed “Heart into Hearts” as well and just copy the review in a post-modern criticism of sequels that are rehashing the plot of the first one?

After the events of “Heart into Hearts”, Alex (George Lam) and Judy (Carol Cheng) finally get married and Alex has taken over the business.

It’s a blast from the past as Netflix has given a 10-episode series order to Blockbuster, a single-camera workplace comedy starring Randall Park, which is set in the last remaining Blockbuster video store.
There is a lot of symbolism — and irony — in the pickup as Netflix started as an underdog video rental upstart that was almost crushed by then-dominant giant Blockbuster. Netflix co-founders Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings actually tried selling the company to Blockbuster for $50 million in 2000 but were rebuffed. They went on to build Netflix into one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world while Blockbuster ceased operations in 2014.
Blockbuster, the series, is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and studio-based Davis Entertainment. Originally set up at NBC, it is created by Vanessa Ramos whose experience in workplace comedies include NBC/Uni TV’s Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with Happy Endings creator...

Pablo Picasso was apparently supposed to have said “good artists copy, great artists steal”. In the world of transnational cinema this is especially true when we see re-imaginings (to use the modern parlance) of particular films. With Luc Besson’s “La Femme Nikita”, the original “inspired” an incredibly dull American remake, TV series and inevitably an unofficial Hong Kong take from D&b Films. It would be hard pressed to argue that they were great artists and Stephen Shin would hardly be considered a visual stylist as Luc Besson in his prime. Yet this is more than just a facsimile copy and does have merit in it’s own right.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been the talk of Hollywood lately, and for good reason. After his captivating performance as the villain in Aquaman, he went on to star in critically acclaimed projects such as Us, The Handmaid’s Tale and Black Mirror. Recently, it’s been announced that he’ll team up again with Jordan Peele for the spiritual sequel to Candyman and on top of that, he’s set to star in HBO’s upcoming series Watchmen and also The Matrix 4.
While we’re happy for his well-deserved success, Abdul-Mateen II’s extremely busy schedule has had some fans worrying that he won’t be able to reprise his role as Black Manta in Aquaman 2. Thankfully, he put those concerns to bed in a recent interview, where he said the following:
“Aquaman 2 is happening! It is happening, and we can look for that, I believe, in...

Following 2017’s Justice League, last year’s Aquaman turned out to be a much-needed win for the Dceu. Though reviews were mixed, the movie grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Naturally, then, Warner Bros. is excited about expanding the Aquaverse and first up is Aquaman 2. Jason Momoa’s sure to return as the King of the Seas, and it looks like two key cast members will be back alongside him as well.
We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who told us Jonah Hill was going to be in The Batman, and that The CW was developing an Arrow spinoff, both of which were confirmed this week – that both Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles in the sequel. That’s all we know for now, but it makes a lot of sense, considering that Aquaman left the door open for more...

[This story contains spoilers for Aquaman.]
For those hoping that the mid-credit sequence at the end of Aquaman makes more sense once the comic book history of the character is factored in, there’s some good news, and some less so. On the one hand, yes, those two characters have an important comic book canon relationship. On the other, it’s really not what you might expect.
Throughout the film we saw clips of Dr. Stephen Shin (Randall Park) on TV sharing his theories about Atlantis. He was dismissed as a quack, but he was vindicated in the mid-credits scene in ...

(Spoilers ahead for the mid-credits scene from “Aquaman.” You have been warned.)
So here we are, finally, getting the first new film based on a DC Comics property since the maligned “Justice League.” But while “Aquaman” does briefly acknowledge that the events of that movie happened, it otherwise is actually kind of a soft reboot of this whole thing, otherwise totally divorced from the Zack Snyder era of DC movies.
That divorce even includes something the Snyder films and “Wonder Woman” famously eschewed: a mid-credits teaser.
The scene, which comes about 5 minutes into the credits, reveals that Black Manta survived his battle with Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and introduces a new villain — Dr. Stephen Shin, played by Randall Park.

When we last saw Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) in the film proper, he was in a bad spot.
