The Avenue has claimed North American rights to Press Play, a romantic drama from Parasite producer Cj Enm, starring Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), Clara Rugaard (I Am Mother), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon franchise) and Matt Walsh (Veep), which it will release next year.
The film picked up by Highland Film Group’s domestic distribution arm centers on a young woman (Rugaard) who has a chance to save the love of her life (Pullman) when she discovers that the mixtape they made together can transport her back in time. It marks the feature directorial debut of visual effects editor Greg Björkman, who teamed up with James Bachelor (Hulu’s Into the Dark) to write the script.
Cj Enm’s Yeonu Choi produced the film with Josh Boone, Logan Lerman and Jonathan Schwartz, with Cj’s Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko serving as exec producers. Cj Enm is also handling international sales.

Russell Crowe is set to star as artist Mark Rothko in a film titled “Rothko” and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
Crowe will lead an ensemble cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jared Harris and Aisling Franciosi, and the film will be set in the art world about Rothko’s daughter’s attempt to preserve her father’s legacy. Franciosi, who broke out in “The Nightingale,” will play Crowe’s daughter in the film.
Rothko is a Latvian artist known for his color field paintings of irregular, painterly rectangles, which he mainly produced between 1949-1970. Taylor-Johnson’s film is adapted from a book by Lee Seldes called “The Legacy of Mark Rothko” about how Kate Rothko fought corrupt, elitist power brokers who have conspired to sell her father’s art fraudulently after he passes. She became an orphan at 19 and a mother to her 7-year-old brother, and with few resources...

As far as first impressions go, Swedish actor Martin Wallstrom (full name: Carl Martin Gunnar Wallström Milkéwitz) was one of the biggest highlights coming out of the inaugural season of Mr. Robot, and considering the sheer quality of USA Network’s acclaimed cyber-thriller, that’s quite the compliment.
It’s a breakout performance that hasn’t gone unnoticed, either, with The Hollywood Reporter today revealing that Wallstrom has landed a key role in Ashes in the Snow. Set to star opposite Bel Powley, the coming-of-age drama is lifted from Ruta Sepetys’ World War II best-seller Between Shades of Grey and will see Wallstrom don the military garb as a Soviet officer. Taunted for his Ukrainian upbringing, Wallstrom’s outcast strikes up an unlikely friendship with 16-year-old Lina Vilkas (Powley) and her ailing mother, lending them a shred of hope in an otherwise bitter and harsh environment.

Here’s an exclusive first look at Imperial Dreams, a film that stars John Boyega. Brought to Sundance two years ago by Like Crazy producer Jonathan Schwartz, the film won the Best of Next Audience Award and was on the way to being sold before the picture was seen by J.J. Abrams, and it led him to set Boyega for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Boyega suddenly was going to be too busy to promote the film, but it’s a different proposition now that he starred in that first…...

Youth On The MARCHThere are 48 individual films screening in the Wavelengths section of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The relative importance of this section, amidst the vast array of offerings in this relatively huge festival, depends on your taste in movies, of course, to say nothing of your specific objectives. If you’re coming to Toronto to try to score a hot tip in this year’s Oscar race, well . . . I feel sorry for you on a number of levels. But Wavelengths is unlikely to be your jam. Originally conceived exclusively as a showcase for experimental and non-narrative films (hence the section’s title, a direct tribute to avant-garde master and Toronto native son Michael Snow), Wavelengths now encompasses the edgier, less commercial side of art cinema. This is the first of two preview essays, and my aim is to cover everything in the section. These are the...

Working from a deeply original aperture, you couldn’t ask for a better calling card with the iconoclastic look into the species. Diane Bell’s debut film was a double winner at Sundance (Alfred P. Sloan Prize and Excellence in Cinematography Award Dramatic) the year that Winter’s Bone won the Grand Jury Prize. While Obselidia garnered fanfare back in 2010, her sophomore film will likely receive more curious onlookers due to the titular pairing of Jessica Biel and Zosia Mamet who’ll be technically breaking out in film with this item. Re-teaming with dp Zak Mulligan, lensing began back in October of 2013 on Shiva and May and since it bypassed all film fests in 2014, there is no doubt that this Girls friendly item will have been among the most earliest submissions sent to the Park City folks.

It’s hard to believe that John Singleton’s generation-defining film Boyz n the Hood came out 23 years ago, in 1991, introducing audiences to a part of Los Angeles that’s a world away from Hollywood. It’s even harder to believe that South Central is still just as hard a place to live and thrive now as it was then. Malik Vitthal’s first feature, Imperial Dreams, which grew out of a Sundance Lab project and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week, aims to tell a modern story of hope amidst the gang-ridden streets of Watts, and it largely succeeds.

I’m betting that Drake Doremus’s currently untitled drama will make it three for three at Sundance with Douchebag (Sundance ’10), Grand Jury Prize winning Like Crazy (Sundance ’11) or four for four in Park City when you include his debut film, the Slamdance selected Spooner. Once again teaming with Felicity Jones, this also stars Guy Pearce, Kyle MacLachlan, Amy Ryan and Alexandra Wentworth, filming on his latest began in August of 2011 – so with the exception of no title, there won’t be last minute preparations on this one and surely bidding war preparations might already be in the works.

The Oscar buzz has been surrounding Mary Elizabeth Winstead for her performance in Smashed all year, since the film debuted at Sundance back in January, where it jointly won the Special Jury Prize.
I absolutely loved the film when it continued its festival circuit at Tiff, and with the film currently in limited release in the Us, Sony have finally announced that they’ll be releasing the film here in the UK on 14th December.
Winstead stars opposite Aaron Paul, with the leading duo playing a functioning alcoholic couple, and when the former realises what a mess her life has become, her path to sobriety is not an easy one.
“Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter . . . and getting smashed. When Kate’s partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something’s got to give.

Thanks to films like "Death Proof," "The Thing" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" -- plus tweets like this one about "Looper" -- Mary Elizabeth Winstead has become something of a geek icon over the last five years. It's her performance in the indie drama "Smashed," however, that could put her in the same breath as perennial Oscar contenders like Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley.
In "Smashed," Winstead stars as Kate, an elementary school teacher who also happens to be a raging alcoholic. After a particularly lengthy bender with her husband (played by "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul), Kate decides she needs help, and the film tracks the ups and downs of her recovery attempt. Directed and co-written by James Ponsoldt (who worked on the script with Susan Burke, a recovering alcoholic herself), "Smashed" is not a typical addiction drama, thanks in part to Winstead's full-bodied portrayal of Kate,...

Last week, we heard that Sony Pictures Classics had set the film’s Us release date for 12th October, and now we’ve got nine new images to share, giving us a look a transformed Winstead, significantly more washed-out than we’re used to seeing her, on her path to sobriety.
“Kate and Charlie like to have a good time. Their marriage thrives on a shared fondness for music, laughter . . . and getting smashed. When Kate’s partying spirals into hard-core asocial behavior, compromising her job as an elementary schoolteacher, something’s got to give. But change isn’t exactly a cakewalk.

With BAMcinemaFest kicking off this week, New Yorkers who didn’t get the chance to attend Sundance, Cannes or SXSW this year will have a opportunity to sample the best of those fests alongside other cinematic special events. The lineup includes festival favorites “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Compliance,” and “Nobody Walks" among many more (check out the full lineup here). And while the latter hasn’t generated quite as much buzz as some of the other entries just yet, we called it “a sensual, emotionally complex film” and “one of the best at [Sundance].” The third feature from writer/director Ry Russo-Young centers on a young New York artist who comes to stay with a Los Angeles family while she completes her short film and ends up affecting the lives of each family member. The ensemble includes John Krasinski, Olivia Thirlby, Rosemarie DeWitt, Justin Kirk, India Ennenga and Dylan McDermott...

Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...

Sony Pictures Classics Confirmed for ‘Smashed’; IFC Nabs ‘Grabbers’; Cinedigm Fights ‘Invisible War’
One month after we reported that Sony Pictures Classics were “on the verge of picking up” Smashed, Deadline has come in with a press release confirming this acquisition. As you may already know, the film at hand is a drama about the perils of alcoholism, which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aaron Paul, Octavia Spencer, Nick Offerman, and Megan Mullaly, and is directed by James Ponsoldt. Our reaction out of Sundance was one of all-around positivity, with special notice going to Winstead‘s peformance; that’s the primary hook, as far as I’m concerned. Hearing that everything else works alongside it is icing on the cake, if you will.

Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Surrogate and The House I Live In among challenging award-winners at 2012 festival
A Louisiana-set drama about a father and his daughter threatened by the impact of global warming, the autobiographical tale of a man's quest to lose his virginity despite living out much of his life in an iron lung and a polemical documentary targeting America's war on drugs were among the top prize-winners as the Sundance film festival reached its denouement at the weekend.
Beasts of the Southern Wild, the story of a six-year-old girl living with her dad in the flood-threatened basins near the Mississippi delta, won both the jury prize for best Us drama and a cinematography prize. Benh Zeitlin's film features a cast of non-actors and has been praised by the Guardian's Damon Wise as "the first significant eco-threat movie to be seen through the eyes of the generation...

Parker Posey was all set to host last night's awards ceremony, but fell ill — and so, as live-bloggers Eric Hynes and Claiborne Smith report, Sundance festival director John Cooper reluctantly took the helm, choking up a bit right at the top as he drove himself through a remembrance of Bingham Ray. Rebounding, he brought on director and actress Katie Aselton as co-host and it was on to the awards. You can actually watch all this here (select "2012 Sundance Film Festival"). An overview of what the critics are saying about the winners:
Grand Jury Prize: Documentary. The House I Live In, "a lucid, long-view unpacking of the War on Drugs from Eugene Jarecki, who ably dissected the lead-up to the Iraq War in Why We Fight." The Boston Globe's Ty Burr: "The movie marshals a wide selection of talking heads, from Oklahoma prison guards and Reagan-era appointees to street dealers and Jarecki's own nanny,...

Sundance is wrapping up once again this year and as with every year, quite a few films are generating quite the buzz. Among them is The House I Live In, The Law in These Parts and Violeta Went to Heaven who all earned Jury Prizes. The Sundance awards (while I rarely agree with the choices) are always interesting to follow each year, since the winners are sometimes entirely unexpected. This year there’s no surprise that the most talked about film – Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, took home the top prize.
Here is the full list of winners from the press release, including the five Audience Award winners.

Chicago – “Art is not a competition. But if it were, these would be the winners,” quipped filmmaker Mike Birbiglia at the Jan. 28 awards presentation for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Birbiglia’s deadpan humor would’ve made him an ideal host for the event, and his appearance was one of the few bright spots in a rather disappointing ceremony.
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, stepped in to replace Indie Queen Parker Posey, whose inspired comic turn in Michael Walker’s “Price Check” garnered positive buzz among festivalgoers. The show opened in tears and solemnity as Cooper paid heartfelt tribute to the late film executive Bingham Ray, who suffered a fatal stroke during the festival.
One of the evening’s big winners was Benh Zeitlin’s visually arresting drama “Beasts of the Southern Wild” about a six-year-old girl (Quvenzhané Wallis) who embarks on a search...

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has come to an end, and the winners of the Jury, Audience, and Next <=> awards have been announced. There was a great selection of films this year at the festival, and I've seen more good than bad. I'm ultimately happy with the outcome. Beasts of the Southern Wild was this year's most buzzed about film and took home the top Grand Jury Prize. I didn't like it as much as everyone else, but it was still good, and it won. I think it was just way too over hyped for what I ended up seeing. Maybe I would have liked it more had I gone in with no expectations.

Park City, Utah -- A mythical film starring an 8-year-old girl and a documentary about the war on drugs took top honors at the Sundance Film Festival.
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the grand jury prize in the U.S. dramatic competition, and "The House I Live In" won the same honor in the U.S. documentary category Saturday at the independent film festival's awards ceremony.
Directed and co-written by 29-year-old first-time filmmaker Benh Zeitlin, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" follows a girl named Hushpuppy who lives with her father in the southern Delta. The film also won the cinematography prize.
Zeitlin said he was grateful to the Sundance Institute and labs, where he worked on the film for more than three years.

Fox Searchlight was the big winner at the Sundance Film Festival 2012, as two of their acquired titles won top awards. It is no surprise that Benh Zeitlin‘s Beast of the Southern Wild (our review here) picked up the grand jury dramatic prize, as it was the most-buzzed of the fest. The Surrogate, starring John Hawkes, won the dramatic audience award and one can read our review of that drama here. It was great to see other fest favorites like Mike Birbiglia‘s Sleepwalk With Me and The Queen of Versailles among other winners. Check them all out below and see our full coverage here.
