As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

In 2016, Liam Gavin’s heartbreaking and keenly intelligent A Dark Song set the bar for films about grieving mothers of stolen sons turning to the occult in search of a solution, and set it high. Nevertheless, hopes were high for From Black, whose take on the difficult business of what happens in the aftermath of loss was said to be informed by director Thomas Marchese’s experiences in his former career as a police officer. Marchese previously made the documentary Fallen, which attempted to dive into the psychology of officers who have lost colleagues in the line of duty yet continue to serve. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to have made much effort to look beneath the surface when it comes to the people whom officers often find themselves working with.
This film begins and ends with police sergeant Bray (Jennifer Lafleur) exploring the scene of a crime. Nobody knows precisely what.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and Syfy’s celebrating accordingly with a marathon of the Leprechaun movies. But if you’re looking for horror inspiration beyond the pint-sized killer’s holiday-appropriate franchise, a vast world of worthy Irish horror movies is available at your fingertips.
If you’re feeling lucky, here are ten Irish horror movies you can stream today.
Grabbers – AMC+
If you’re in the mood for a horror-comedy creature feature, this movie is the answer. A small island off the coast of Ireland becomes ground zero to an alien invasion. These tentacled monsters, dubbed Grabbers by the locals, have an affinity for human blood. That’s terrible news for the locals until they discover alcohol is highly toxic to the spaced invaders. Naturally, they deduce the only way to survive the attack is to get hammered. Drunk villagers versus man-eating aliens make for an entertaining way to spend St.

Last year, we heard that the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were “returning to their DIY indie origins” with a new project called Something in the Dirt. Now a teaser trailer for Something in the Dirt has arrived online – and along with that comes the information that the movie is going to receive a theatrical release on November 4th!
Benson and Moorhead directed Something in the Dirt from a script written by Benson. The duo also produced the film and star in it… and the movie was actually filmed in their apartments during the pandemic shutdown. Here’s the story they’re telling with this one:
Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

One of the great things about horror movies is that they offer a universal experience. No matter where you go in the world, the same things are considered scary, which is why great horror movies are made all over the world. Today we’re going to be focusing on ones made or produced in Ireland, so if you’re looking for a fright, try one of these out.
The Sleep of Death
The Sleep of Death was released in 1980 and was written and directed by Calvin Floyd. It’s often described as a Swedish-Irish film, thanks to the prevalence of Swedish cast members. The film is based on the 1872 novella The Room in the Dragon Volant and is sometimes called The Inn of the Flying Dragon, in reference to the title of the novella. The story follows a young Englishman called Colonel Gaillard, played by Per Oscarsson, who goes to France to pursue a woman,...

When he was working on The Haunting of Hill House, genre filmmaker extraordinaire Mike Flanagan ambitiously took on helming all 10 episodes himself. It proved to be an extremely taxing venture for Flanagan, so when it came time to begin production on The Haunting of Bly Manor, he set out to not only bring in some other talented directors to collaborate with, but was looking at it as an opportunity to be able to support more voices in the genre space as well.
The director’s pool on Bly Manor is pretty damn impressive, and features the likes of Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin, Axelle Carolyn, Yolanda Ramke, Ben Howling, and E.L. Katz, with Flanagan taking the reins on the first episode.
“When we first started talking about a second season, coming off of Hill House, I was not in great shape,” Flanagan explained. “I lost like 40 pounds in production and I...

EntertainmentThis standalone series is the second instalment of the riveting ‘Haunting of Hill House’, and released on Netflix on October 9.Geetika MantriScreenshot/NetflixSpoilers ahead In a lot of mainstream stories that we see in cinema, love tends to be a major driver in the actions of the characters. But there are some stories which are just as powerful because they unravel another emotion that can be as strong a motivator as love, if not more – guilt. And Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, which released on October 9, is a brilliant exploration of a drama that is driven by several of its characters being haunted by the guilt of their past. The Haunting of Bly Manor is the second instalment after the riveting Haunting of Hill House, though the two series explore different settings and different stories. Bly Manor, unlike its predecessor which was entirely directed by Mike Flanagan, has episodes directed by others,...

Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling.
Yolanda Ramke was browsing social media when she spotted a tweet from Mike Flanagan, creator/showrunner of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, complimenting her and her co-director Ben Howling on Cargo.
Thrilled, Ramke sent off a grateful response to Flanagan. That prompted her Us agent, CAA’s Matt Martin, who knew a second series was in the works, to get in touch with the co-executive producer, Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy.
In turn that led to a Skype interview for Ramke and Howling with Flanagan and Macy. After a brief wait, the offer came for the duo to co-direct episodes of The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is now shooting in Vancouver.
Flanagan announced the hiring of the Aussies on Twitter along with Ciarán Foy, Liam Gavin (A Dark Song) and Axelle Carolyn.

Sophia (Walker) is grief-stricken and overwhelmed with sadness since the untimely death of her son. In a desperate attempt to achieve some form of closure, she reaches out to Solomon (Oram), an occultist with experience in an ancient invocation ritual that Sophia believes will allow her to make contact with her deceased child. Locked away in a remote country house, the pair undergo a long and arduous ritual, risking both their mental and physical safety as they attempt to access a world beyond their understanding. But when Solomon finds out that Sophia has not been truthful about her wish, a greater danger threatens them. In the dark, they find that they are no longer alone in the house. They are now...

This past year was simply too good for horror fans.
I wasn’t sure where to even start making a list of favorites for 2017. Theatrical horror killed it like never before, the indie scene remains vital and strong, horror TV is bigger than ever, and cult and boutique video labels continue putting out gorgeous Blu-rays of gem after gem. There’s really too much to include here. Movies like Get Out, The Shape of Water, and Raw are absolutely among my favorites of the year, but because I’ve talked about them elsewhere and they’ve previously been covered by my brilliant colleagues here at Daily Dead, I’ll try to focus on some other picks instead.
Here, in no real order, are some of my favorites in horror for 2017:

Hellraiser meets The Descent in this macabre, mind-bending horror, with Sightseers star Steve Oram as an occult practitioner dabbling in the far reaches of evil, in a dazzling debut from director Liam Gavin. With shades of cult horrors Kill List and Wake Wood, A Dark Song is nevertheless fiercely original and innovative, helmed with an assurance that is all the more astonishing given it is Gavin’s first film. After a slot at the London Film Festival, and winning Gavin the New Visions award at the 2016 Sitges Festival, A Dark Song is brooding, brutal and brilliant, and now ready to scare audiences at home!

Sometimes it isn’t the house that’s haunted; it’s the people inside. That’s certainly the case for “A Dark Song;” in writer-director Liam Gavin’s debut, a woman is so grief-stricken that she subjects herself to what might be the most arduous, drawn-out séance ever captured onscreen. Called the Ambramelin, this obscure ceremony is almost as stressful to observe as it is to enact — Gavin wants us to feel the mental, physical, and spiritual toll it takes on those desperate enough to invoke it.
Intially it’s unclear exactly what the Ambramelin might be, but it’s clear the prep involves much more than digging out the Ouija board. In anticipation, Sophia (Catherine Walker) spent nearly half a year abstaining from all sex and following a strict diet. Lately she’s only been allowed to eat between dusk and dawn; for the next few days, she’ll fast entirely.

All deaths are hard to deal with, but I would argue there is nothing worse than losing your child (after all, a parent is not supposed to outlive their children). Certainly, when we lose a loved one of any kind, the lengths we might go to, to speak to them, even one last time, might seem extreme to others. Liam Gavin's impressive debut feature A Dark Song looks at these extremes with a sympathetic but realistic eye, and a great capacity for finding new ways of presenting traditional horror tropes. Sophia (Catherine Walker) has never overcome the death of her young son. She hires a strange occultist, Joseph (Steve Oram), to perform a ritual that will allow her to speak to her dead son. They...

The latest film from Irish/Welsh director Liam Gavin (Jericho, Sunshower) will be filled with many moments that will make your skin crawl, if the new U.S. trailer is any indication. In A Dark Song, Sophia Howard (Catherine Walker) has placed her trust with an occult practitioner (Steve Oram) to perform an ancient ritual to bring back her deceased child. Unfortunately, to her discovery, these kinds of rituals come with dire consequences as she now must see this one to the very end.
We said in our review: “Gavin’s debut stands on its own two feet and joins the likes of other quality narratives to come through this festival, like It Follows in years past, while also having echoes of The Shining. More restrained than Kubrick’s masterpiece, it’s not to say it purposely tries to bore the audience, but rather genuinely put one in the shoes of the protagonist.

Ghosts and demons are pretty spooky, but they’re not quite as spooky as a man demanding that you take your pants off so he can summon ghosts and demons. This trailer for A Dark Song doesn’t necessarily emphasize creepy men over creepy creatures, but it does make a point to underline the fact that its paranormal expert character is bit off-putting. The movie is about a woman hoping to bring her dead child back to life, and doing so requires her and to welcome a weirdo occultist into her home so he can perform a series of rituals. This being a horror movie, it seems safe to assume that things aren’t going to go very smoothly.
A Dark Song was directed by Liam Gavin, and it will be in theaters and on-demand services on April 28.

"This is the price of our rage. Embrace it, don't fear it." IFC Films has released another new official Us trailer for the indie horror thriller film A Dark Song, from Irish/Welsh filmmaker Liam Gavin. This horror story follows a determined young woman grieving over the loss of her young son, who reaches out to an occultist with experience in an ancient invocation ritual that she believes might allow her to make contact with her deceased child. Catherine Walker stars as Sophia, with a full cast including Mark Huberman, Susan Loughnane and Steve Oram. This played at Fantastic Fest and the London Film Festival and is being released in late April in the Us. This trailer is so much more interesting than the last one. Take a look. Here's the new Us trailer (+ poster) for Liam Gavin's A Dark Song, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): You can...

One of the most pleasant surprises to come out of last year’s Fantastic Fest was Liam Gavin’s A Dark Song, a stripped-down, no-nonsense horror movie about the perils of the occult. It was one of the most intriguing, unique, and creepy movies I saw in 2016…and soon, it will be one of the most intriguing, […]

A new trailer for Liam Gavin's A Dark Song is intended to promote the film's upcoming U.S. release, but instead it has ruined my day. That's because it reminds me of my first viewing of the movie, when it made its North American debut at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Shelagh M. Rowan-Legg, one of our associate editors, had already published her review, which included this striking sentence: Rather than give the usual frights, Gavin instead goes for the lonely heart of the occult: the attempt to contact the beyond, for the most heart-wrenching of reasons. Initially, I felt the film was quite chilly, but I don't know if that is its actual temperature or if I was withdrawing into myself to avoid engaging fully...

"I've done this three times. Once it worked, twice it didn't." Desperation leads to a disturbing occult ritual gone wrong in IFC Midnight's official trailer and poster for A Dark Song.
Synopsis: "An unholy alliance between two damaged souls leads them on a disturbing descent into the depraved realms of black magic. Sophia (Catherine Walker) is a grieving and desperate woman with a secret. Joseph (Sightseers’ Steve Oram) is an anti-social, alcoholic expert in the occult who reluctantly agrees to help her. Holed up in a remote cabin amidst the desolate wilds of Northern Wales, the two embark on a grueling six-month series of dark rituals that will push them both to the physical and psychological breaking point. The debut feature from rising horror auteur Liam Gavin sustains an air of quietly creeping dread as it builds towards one hell of a payoff."

Just a thought: Maybe let’s not try to commune with the dead.
In Liam Gavin’s “A Dark Song” — which world premiered at beloved genre fest Fantastic Fest last year — absolutely no one takes that advice, and the results are shocking. The film stars Catherine Walker as Sophia, a grieving mother who will do anything to reconnect with her dead son, who is aided by Joseph (Steve Oram), who promises he can summon the child back to Sophie.

Here's our look at small, low-budget horror A Dark Song, out now in the UK...
The atmosphere in A Dark Song is heavy. No matter whether we’re in the thick of the film's religious rituals or in one of the moments of levity, for a time we’re not far from the feeling that something is about to go awfully wrong, or right in an awful way. It’s a small, low budget horror film that, when it works, is capable of getting under your skin.

The first full-length trailer has arrived for the indie U.K. chiller A Dark Song, the directorial debut of Liam Gavin. Centered on a grieving mother (Catherine Walker) looking to get in contact with her deceased son through a damaged occultist (Sightseers‘ Steve Oram), A Dark Song looks to focus on atmosphere and slow-burn-induced dread, despite this trailer’s insistence that it is more in the realm of jump-scare fare built for a PG-13 January dump.

One of the most interesting looking and sounding titles from last year's Fantastic Fest was Liam Gavin's A Dark Song (review) which our very own Rochefort praised as "distinct and refreshing."
Written and directed by Gavin, the movie stars Catherine Walker as Sophia, as a young woman who teams up with an occultist, played by Sightseers' Steve Oram, who perform a ritual which opens a gateway between this world and the next.
It's a pretty mystifying write-up but everything on the project seems to be pretty wishy washy on the plot and I'm more than Ok with this simple description which, along with the review from last year, has me fully sold on the movie.

Writer-director Liam Gavin made quite an impression on the festival circuit in 2016 with his debut feature A Dark Song and with the UK theatrical release now approaching the UK trailer for the film has arrived over on that side of the pond. Steve Oram and Catherine Walker star in this tale of a bereaved woman who turns to an occultist for help in reaching out to the beyond in a months-long black magic ritual. Our own Shelagh Rowan-Legg reviewed it here when it screened as part of Fantastic Fest and you can get a taste with the UK trailer below. This latest trailer definitely skews more towards the bumpy-jumpy bits of the film than did the original teaser which focuses far more on mood...

IFC Midnight announced at the Afm it has acquired Us rights to Liam Gavin’s A Dark Song.
Steve Oram and Catherine Walker star in the story about a young woman who hires an occultist to prepare for a ritual that will grant them the one thing they want above all else.
David Collins, Tim Dennison and Cormac Fox produced the film, which premiered at 2016 Fantastic Fest. Irish Film Board and Ffilm Cymru Wales financed.
“Liam Gavin demonstrates a remarkably unique eye in A Dark Song, an unnerving film that we’re confident will both frighten and astound audiences,” said IFC Midnight.
“We are very excited to be working once more with Xyz films and with Liam to release his film in the Us.”
Matthew Hechinger from Sundance Selects/IFC Films brokered the deal with Nate Bolotin of Xyz Films. Kaleidoscope handles international sales.
