Channing Tatum to direct Magic Mike 2? Channing Tatum, whose White House Down opens this evening in North America, may co-direct the sequel to his 2012 sleeper domestic hit Magic Mike. Unlike the original film, directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences as a stripper, the star of The Vow and 21 Jump Street told The Hollywood Reporter that the aptly titled (at least for now) Magic Mike 2 "will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama. The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences." (Photo: Channing Tatum in a rare non-shirtless moment in Magic Mike.) Magic Mike was the surprise hit of the summer. Never in a million years did I, or anyone else for that matter, think the film centered around male strippers would earn as much as it did. The film from director Steven Soderbergh has taken in an impressive $77 million in two weeks and will surely earn even more than that in the coming weeks. Even more incredible is the fact that the picture's budget was $7 million. Talk about a money-making machine! With such success, it's obvious a sequel would at least be under consideration. According to Channing Tatum, they're already working on the story. He said, "Yes! Yes! We're working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger." Magic Mike is now playing in theaters nation-wide and stars Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn, Alex Pettyfer, James Martin Kelly, Cody Horn and Avery Camp. Stay tuned!

Channing Tatum is a shirtless hit in Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, which grossed nearly $20m on opening day. Magic Mike opened better than Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve, and Ocean's Thirteen, despite an ensemble cast that included George Clooney, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bernie Mac, Al Pacino, Scott Caan, and Andy Garcia. The film is the third Tatum hit this year, following The Vow, with Rachel McAdams, and 21 Jump Street, with Jonah Hill. His only flop in 2012 has been Haywire. Also in the Magic MIke cast: Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Munn, Matt Bomer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, James Martin Kelly, Reid Carolin , Cody Horn, Avery Camp, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, and Gabriel Iglesias. Magic Mike trailed only one movie on Friday: the Seth MacFarlane / Mark Wahlberg / Mila Kunis comedy Ted.
