Just 24 hours ahead of the fifth and final season premiere of “Insecure,” creator and star Issa Rae welcomed hundreds of fans gathered at the parking-lot-turned-venue of Hilltop’s Coffee and Kitchen in L.A. for Insecure Fest — a five-hour live musical celebration of the show.
“I gotta shout out Hilltop for hosting this in the parking lot, make sure to go there and get you some lavender lattes because that’s my favorite,” Rae quipped, before giving a final thanks to HBO for giving her and the show this platform.
First held as a block party in Brooklyn celebrating “Insecure’s” first season, the festival has grown to mimic Rae’s character Issa Dee’s block party featured in Season 4 of the HBO comedy. As another real-life connection, hosting the event at Hilltop also represented Rae’s growing business empire, as she’s a partner with the coffee shop.

HBO Max is “rooting for everybody Black.”
Or so reads the bio of its latest social-first audience initiative called Scene in Black, which launches Monday and focuses on connecting HBO and HBO Max’s Black talent, creatives and fans.
The team borrowed the line from one of HBO’s biggest stars, “Insecure” creator, writer, producer and actor Issa Rae, who went viral with that quip during an interview with Variety at the 2017 Emmys. It’s a tremendous one-liner, but the sentiment also accurately sums up the intent behind Scene in Black, which is to amplify Black voices.
Jackie Gagne, HBO Max and HBO’s SVP of multicultural marketing, detailed the development of the new initiative, which she describes as “our destination for the telling of stories from the Black perspective.”

HBO Max has set a new audience initiative titled HBO Max Pa’lante! which looks to break down barriers for new voices and driving awareness to culturally relevant programming across HBO Max for Latinx audiences.
Pa’lante!, which translates to “forward”, was founded on the vision of empowerment, resilience, and hope. It hopes to celebrate the ambicultural movement of embracing being both fully Latino and fully American without having to sacrifice any part of one’s identity.
“For more than a decade we’ve been developing creative, audience-first campaigns that strategically engage Latinx, Black, Asian-American and LGBTQ+ audiences,” said Jackie Gagne, Senior Vice President, Multicultural Marketing, WarnerMedia. “With the launch of HBO Max Pa’lante! we are creating a home for Latinx viewers and a community committed to nurturing Latino voices and sparking provocative conversations.”
As Pa’lante! kicks into gear, HBO Latino social media handles will be rebranded to @palantehbomax.

After adapting Ta-Nehisi Coates's 2015 bestseller Between the World and Me for the Apollo, Kamilah Forbes is making her television directorial debut by turning the play into a special for HBO Max, set to air on Nov. 21. Between the World and Me is written as a letter from Coates to his 15-year-old son, in which he details his experiences growing up in Baltimore and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community. By combining powerful performances, elements of the Apollo's production, documentary footage from the star-studded cast's home lives, archival footage, and animation, the book was reimagined during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic - and against the backdrop of the killings of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black Americans across the nation.

When HBO’s marketing teams began crafting the influencer marketing campaign for their sci-fi thriller “Lovecraft Country,” they made sure to keep the blerd community in mind.
“It is cool to be a blerd now,” WarnerMedia’s senior VP of multicultural marketing Jackie Gagne tells Variety. “It is a very passionate group and we knew that there would be a lot of love for ‘Lovecraft Country’ and that those would be voices that would really help us drive awareness for the series.”
Over the last few years, the slang term for “Black nerd” has grown in both popular awareness and esteem, with more events and marketing created for and catering to the members of that community.
“We sort of picked up on this when we were first promoting ‘Westworld,’” Gagne says. “We knew the blerd community would really be interested in the subject matter, so we started to form and identify relationships a while ago.
