Jamie Foxx, who has been out of the public eye since experiencing a medical emergency on a film set in April, made his first official public outing Monday night during a surprise appearance at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & Aapi Achievements.
Foxx took to the stage of the show at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City to accept the Vanguard Award from presenter and his The Burial co-star Jurnee Smollett. He spoke for about 12 minutes in front of a stunned crowd after accepting the award, given in honor of his career and his performance in Prime Video’s legal drama.
He got emotional immediately as he began his remarks, saying he couldn’t “actually walk” six months ago. “I want to thanks everybody. I’ve been through something, I’ve been through some things,” he told the crowd, which applauded its encouragement.

Dumb Money producer Aaron Ryder talked Saturday about why he wanted to bring to screen the story of GameStop’s short squeeze of 2021, a financial fluke that has gone down in history as a triumph for the little guy against the behemoths of Wall Street.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Film Los Angeles event, Ryder revealed he had been inspired to make the film after tirelessly following the story in real time during lockdown.
“I went deep on it, trying to understand what the short was and to educate myself,” he told moderator Anthony D’Alessandro. “I got a call from MGM [where he has a production deal], who said, ‘We think there’s a movie here.’
“What we needed was a piece of IP. There was a lot of competition. I knew we had to be first [to option Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network]. Luckily, we were, and our next task was finding the right people...

Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again has rounded out its revamped creative team with a new showrunner and directors. Dario Scardapane has been tapped as showrunner and directing team Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Loki) are set to direct the Charlie Cox series, sources confirm to Deadline.
The series has been revamping its creative team after determining the show wasn’t working as is. Head scribes Chris Ord and Matt Corman and episodic directors were let go, but remain EPs on the two-season series. Daredevil, which first aired on Netflix, follows Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind attorney turned crimefighting superhero.
Less than half of the series’ 18 episodes were shot. Marvel plans to keep some footage though the series will pivot from being a procedural show to having a more serialized focus. Scardapone will write the new episodes, incorporating what was already shot, we’re told.

This is Day 86 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
A themed picket that focused on first responder TV shows attracted the likes of James Pickens, Jr, Jason George, Caterina Scorsone, Harry Shum, Jr, Chandra Wilson and Kim Raver to Warner Bros. Friday in Burbank.
“Some of us have been fortunate enough to have gigs that have given us a certain amount of comfortableness, if that’s a word,” Pickens Jr, who plays Dr. Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, told fellow strikers. “This strike is about the rank and file, about the majority of actors who are just trying to make enough to get health benefits, to make a living wage. The business model has changed. We have to be a part of that change. It’s about equity, it’s about what is fair. We are not going to stop here. We are going to continue until they listen us. Oppenheimer. The critical debates surrounding Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s sprawling portrait of the “father of the atomic bomb,” offer a fascinating window into an industry reckoning with the fate of its most elusive creature: the summer blockbuster. Along with its better half in the joint entity now known as “Barbenheimer,” the film has been burdened with the responsibility of saving motion pictures from financial apocalypse and existential crises. Financially, its impact has been staggering: in July 2023 alone—the second-best month ever in the history of US box office returns, per Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro—“Barbenheimer” racked up a combined $547.8 million; Greta Gerwig’s Barbie netted the month’s highest gross of $366.4 million, and Nolan’s epic followed at $181.4 million. But the portmanteau has only blurred the crucial differences between the two, not to mention the many ways in which Nolan’s latest both indulges and subverts the vernaculars of big studio tentpoles.

What was it W. B. Yeats wrote, that line Joan Didion lifted and twisted in her essay “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” about West Coast chaos in 1967? Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.
That’s how it felt on Thursday, a few minutes before lunch with some seasoned film executive-friends at the Academy Museum (Salad Niçoise again). Ping, a news alert said the actors’ strike was on. Just up the street, SAG-AFTRA was already under media siege. July 13, 2023: It was a hot one in Hollywood, and about to get hotter. As Didion said of the Sixties cultural crisis, “The center was not holding.”
Actors weren’t acting. Writers weren’t writing. Top film reviewers weren’t deigning to review Sound of Freedom, a right wing-connected child-trafficking thriller that slipped past Insidious: The Red Door to lead the box-office for a couple of days, until Tom Cruise took over with Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One.

Superman & Lois likely will continue “for one or two more seasons,” according to DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Gunn and Safran spoke about the Greg Berlanti-produced CW series during a press event Monday. “It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit,” said Gunn when asked about the show.
The third season of Superman & Lois premieres March 14 on the CW, picking up weeks after Superman’s blowout defeat of Ally Allston at the end of Season 2.
Based on the characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman & Lois is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Todd Helbing, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, and David Madden.

David O Russell’s new film Amsterdam is projected to lose up 100m (£90.5m) in box office sales, according to reports.
The period drama is set in the Thirties and follows three friends who witness a murder, become suspects themselves, and uncover one of the most outrageous plots in American history.
The cast includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Robert De Niro, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
According to report by Deadline, the comedy film had a shot at opening to double of what it did this past weekend based on the star-studded cast.
However, it only earned around 6.5m (£5.8m) in 3,005 theatres, boosted by Imax and Plf ticket sales that accounted for more than a third of that number.
Overall, it totalled to a 10m (£9.05m) worldwide start.
The production cost of Amsterdam is reportedly financed by New Regency per its deal with 20th Century Studios.

Another wave of Warner Bros Discovery post-merger layoffs is coming.
We hear multiple divisions of the merged company will be impacted, with Warner Bros. Television Group considered a main target. The staff reductions are expected this week, as soon as (and likely) Tuesday. Speculation about the imminent downsizing started spreading like wildfire Monday morning. Reps for Wbd and Wbtvg declined comment.
The number of layoffs is unclear but appears to be substantial. The HBO/HBO Max programming operation in August laid off 14 of staff — about 70 people — the vast majority of them on the Max side, with the areas of Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and Live-Action Family Originals as the most heavily impacted.
Like with HBO/HBO Max, the Wbtvg cuts are expected to be accompanied by structural changes spearheaded by Chairman Channing Dungey.

Predictions are always a hazardous thing. And I truly hope this one is wrong. But it sure looks like the movie box office, disastrously low in September, will be stuck on the bottom again this month.
September is rarely a great month for ticket sales, but last month is better left undiscussed. Putting aside the first Covid year, 2020, when theaters were mostly closed, this year’s September take, about 319 million, was the worst in recent memory. The monthly total was down more than 13 percent from last year’s, and was less than half of the month’s box office in 2019. It ranked as the lowest since 1996, when ticket sales were just 303.6 million, according to the numbers so conveniently sliced and diced by Box Office Mojo.
And that’s without adjusting for ticket price inflation. Adjust the numbers, and this September’s performance, led by some 41.5 million in monthly sales for The Woman King,...

Christian Bale is not your typical GQ coverboy, but that’s exactly where he’s landed this month, in part because he cares about his newest collaboration with David O. Russell, Amsterdam, on which Bale is also a producer.
The 82-million film has an uphill battle in its first week of release. Despite being booked in 3,000 theaters nationwide, it’s looking at only about 10 million in ticket sales, per analysis from Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro. Given that, Bale said he decided to take a chance on a big, glossy interview to help boost the film.
“People have always told me this kind of stuff helps,” the actor told GQ. “I never believed it. But, I was like, ‘Oh, well, all right.’ I care. I care, you know?”
Another thing he cared about was not getting stuck playing Batman after the success of his billion dollar-grossing collaboration with Christopher Nolan on the Dark Knight trilogy.

It’s been a trying year-plus for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but there’s some good news for the group today: Its signature trophy show, the Golden Globes, will return to NBC in 2023.
HFPA, dick clark productions and the network said the 80th anniversary gala will air live coast-to-coast from the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 10 — that’s a Tuesday, rather than the traditional Sunday.
In a clear statement that NBC have renegotiated their long term agreement with the HFPA, the return of the Globes to the Comcast owned network next year is only a one-year deal. The return of the Globes to NBC comes over continued objections from key publicists and content creators who believe the HFPA has neglected to overhaul its long term membership — and the question will linger exactly which marquee nominees show up.
Nominations will be revealed on Dec. 12.

Updated, 2:53 Pm: Ezra Miller plays the Flash on the big screen, but the actor isn’t proving so quick at keeping below the police radar.
For the second time in as many months, the actor has been arrest by Hawaiian police. See details of his March 28 bust below.
The Hawaii Police Department said in a statement today that “Shortly after 1 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, a 29-year-old visitor from Vermont was arrested for second-degree assault after an incident at a residence.”
It goes on: “During the course of their investigation, police determined that the individual, later identified as Ezra Miller, became irate after being asked to leave and reportedly threw a chair, striking a 26-year-old female on the forehead, resulting in an approximate half-inch cut.”

Pixar’s forthcoming Toy Story prequel Lightyear has put a same-sex kiss back in following an internal backlash to Disney’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation.
A source familiar with the production confirmed the change to Deadline. Variety was the first to report the move.
The embrace is between Hawthorne, a character voiced by Uzo Aduba, and another woman. The characters’ relationship itself was never called into question during production, the source said, but a kiss between the characters was excised before being restored last week. Pixar was one of the loudest voices criticizing Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s handling of the Florida bill, and said in a letter leaked to the press that the company had suppressed same-sex elements in Pixar projects.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will soon sign the bill, which would limit what teachers can say about gender and sexuality in the classroom.

Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, the highest-profile specialty opening to report numbers this weekend (i.e. not distributed by a streamer) posted a solid $96,953 for a per screen average of $16,158 in six theaters in New York/Los Angeles. Critics are calling the film about a washed up porn star returning to his hostile Texas hometown audacious and uproariously funny led by an explosive performance from star Simon Rex, and it is. The weekend saw sold out Q&a appearances from Baker and cast on both coasts ahead of the film’s selective rollout in top markets next weekend and a nationwide expansion over the holidays. Distributor A24 said the film grossed $39,660 Fri.; $31,282 Sat.; and $25,651 Sun.

Paolo Sorrentino said the experience of turning 50 two years ago helped encourage him to depict the experiences of his youth onscreen. That led to the Netflix film The Hand of God.
The Oscar-winning director of The Great Beauty reflected on the decision to look inward during a panel session at Deadline Contenders New York on Saturday. “The time was right,” he recalled feeling, because 50 is “an important moment in life in order to look back and not to look at the future. But at the same time, this movie is giving me a future.”
Returning to his hometown of Naples, writer-director Sorrentino draws from his own upbringing as the source for the Italian-language drama. Set in the ’80s, The Hand of God tells the story of Fabietto Schisa (Filippo Scotti), whose tumultuous life is filled with unexpected highs and lows. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival in September.

Deadline reported yesterday that Marvel’s latest juggernaut, The Eternals, will not be shown in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. The film — which contains the MCUs first same-sex kiss — was due to open in those markets on November 11, but censors sought further cuts beyond any scenes of same-sex intimacy. Disney opted not to make the edits, hence distribution certificates weren’t issued.
In the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt, Deadline reported that a version of The Eternals will be released that removes all scenes of intimacy — be they heterosexual or homosexual. This is generally a normal practice for those markets.
Asked by Australian outlet news.com.au about concerns in those countries over the film’s same-sex marriage between Phastos and Haaz Sleiman, Angelina Jolie — who plays the immortal Thena in the film — called such fears “ignorant.”

Update: Director Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space) who was the subject of allegations of abuse by an ex-partner, has filed criminal complaints in France in response.
“My attorney has filed criminal complaints of Libel and Harassment on my behalf, in France, against Tracy Robertson, aka ‘Scarlett Amaris’, a screenwriter and fantasist who launched a vicious attack on my career and reputation on March 16, 2021,” Stanley said.
Stanley called the accusations “lies and damnable lies, and I have the witnesses and evidence to fully discredit Tracy’s story as a dark fairytale that bears no relationship to the truth.”
He added that he was confident in the outcome of his legal proceeding, and said his reputation would be vindicated by the evidence he would present.
“In the meantime,” he concluded, “I wish to thank all those who have stood by me through this difficult period.”

The ArcLight Cinemas in Santa Monica face an eviction lawsuit from the Santa Monica Place for non-payment of rent.
Real estate investment trust Macerich served an eviction notice on April 13. The notice came a day after Pacific Theatres announced the permanent closure of all 17 of its ArcLight and Pacific locations.
Santa Monica Arclight in 2019 was one of the lowest-grossing cinemas for the chain, with just more than $4M, per sources. That contrasts with the more popular Hollywood Arclight and Cinerama Dome, which combined did more than $15M. Exhibition sources also say that the Santa Monica Arclight location has a pretty fierce lease, which has prevented the venue from further churning money. The Santa Monica eviction lawsuit gives Pacific seven days to pay $368,841.60, or forfeit the premises. Pacific has yet to respond in court. This latest round continues litigation that began in February between the two parties Macerich filed a suit against Pacific on Feb.

It’s no secret that the Brad Furman-directed City of Lies has had a rocky journey to the big screen. Director Richard Stanley (Color Out of Space) has been abruptly dumped by SpectreVision after allegations of abuse by an ex-partner surfaced.
“SpectreVision will no longer work with Richard Stanley,” said a tweet on the company’s account. “We are proud of the talented cast and crew behind Color Out of Space. Yet we are horrified by the charges against its director. We will be donating future revenue from the film to charities devoted to stopping domestic violence.”
Scarlett Amaris, who describes herself as Stanley’s “long term life and creative partner,” claimed in a blog post dated March 16 that she filed charges for Domestic Violence, Assault & Battery in October 2014.
Deadline has reached out to SpectreVision for additional comment.
SpectreVision was founded in 2010 by actor Elijah Wood, producer Lisa Whalen and directors Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller. The production company mostly focuses on horror films.

“You did me dirty!” said actor Daniel Kaluuya after the audio finally kicked in after he won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his amazing turn as Chairman Fred Hampton in the Shaka King-directed Judas and the Black Messiah.
When presenter Laura Dern revealed Kaluuya as the winner, we could see him but not hear him in the virtual Zoom-ridden ceremony. It was one of many technical hiccups throughout the Golden Globes. Being a little confused, it seemed like the show was about to move on without allowing Kaluuya to give an acceptance speech.
Kaluyya was able to thank King for inspiring him and he referred to the talented director as his “leader and general”.
He also fit in a very relevant quote from the late, great Nipsey Hussle saying, that “We’re here to give ’til we’re empty” — a quote Kaluuya subscribes to.

Updated with additional ads: This year’s Super Bowl shaped up as — let us all hope — a one-of-a-kind experience. But the seventh career championship for Tom Brady, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a win over the Kansas City Chiefs (last year’s champs), had plenty of familiar elements for viewers in this unfamiliar moment.
The title game capped an NFL season that survived the pandemic but saw its sense of spectacle shrink. Many viewers, of course, tune into the Super Bowl mostly for the ads, and they were rewarded with a healthy amount of razzle-dazzle. An array of A-list stars were marshaled by brands, with more talent freed up during 2020 as film and TV shoots got interrupted by the Covid-19 surge.
A high degree of uncertainty faced marketers, with large viewing parties out the window and a host of viewer sensitivities coming off a nerve-shredding year. Mainstays such...

Specialty box office titles and those that also have their foot in the wide release landscape make up the majority of the top box office numbers of the weekend — which is pretty darn good all things considered.
Some of these titles would be considered more “specialty” in the before-times, but as the box office space shifts and digital, PVOD and virtual cinema become part of the conversation more and more, everything is a little more fluid until the “new normal” of box office is established.
As reported by Anthony D’alessandro, the #5 in the top 10 this week is Fatale starring Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy. The Lionsgate thriller added 39 theaters to its count this weekend and bank an estimated $670K to make its cume hit $4 million.
Focus Features has three titles in the top 10 this week including Emerald Fennell’s buzzy awards season title Promising Young Woman, which is now playing in 1,448 theaters.

Updated with video: The pressure was on when directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine set about making Boys State, their film documenting an annual exercise in Texas that gives high school boys the chance to practice democracy in action.
Why? The program lasts just six days.
“We’re used to shooting documentaries over years and years,” Moss says during the Apple TV+ film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Documentary event. “This film…was super compressed.”
Moss and McBaine assembled a sizable crew to follow participants as they joined political parties, debated issues, fielded gubernatorial candidates and ran hard-nosed campaigns.
“We put together a very large team for a documentary…28 people,” McBaine says. “We needed to be there with our four main characters when these extraordinary moments happened because in the kind of filmmaking we do if you miss those you do not have a film.”

Updated with Tuesday stock movement. AMC Entertainment shares fell almost 18% on Monday to close at $3.19, with Cinemark stock also taking a hit after a report that Cinemark has expressed interest in operating select AMC venues.
AMC stock dropped another 10% on Tuesday to $2.86, its lowest point since November 6. Other companies in the sector finished in positive territory. Cinemark bounced back from Monday’s setback, rising 3.5% to $16.25, though it sold off again after hours.
Insiders at both exhibition companies describe the report as inaccurate. The New York Post, citing unidentified sources, reported that the two major circuits — which together control nearly one-third of all U.S. movie screens — could find themselves in an arrangement reflecting the strain of Covid-19. The coronavirus pandemic has shuttered theaters in much of the country, notably in revenue-rich markets like New York and LA, for most of 2020.

It goes without saying that the domestic box office is struggling. That said, it feels that we are trying to find different ways of framing that story every week. At the end of the day, it’s a win to report any numbers at all considering the circumstances — especially for the specialty box office space where many titles are going straight to digital or debuting in a virtual cinema. That particular data is never readily available so all we have are the estimates for films that brave the pandemic and hit physical theaters across the country. With many states issuing closures and lockdowns during the third wave of Covid, the specialty space is almost a ghost town with the exception of some holdovers that are fueling the tank with what they have.
