Despite there being far too many firsts still left to achieve, Black creators have indelibly left their mark on the television landscape for decades.
Just think of names like Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), and Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), whose series went on to become credited for reviving network television, or writers like Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), and Lena Waithe (“The Chi”), who have been able to build their own sort of TV empire with the shows they have written and/or produced.
Even networks like BET, Starz, and MTV still run off of the creative ingenuity of executive producers like Tyler Perry (“Sistas”), Courtney A. Kemp (“Power”), Mona Scott-Young (“Love and Hip Hop”), and even RuPaul (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”).
Often when retelling the story of Black representation on television, there is first acknowledgment of how the writers rooms initially were not reflective of what their casts looked like.

Refresh for updates: Hollywood writers, actors and producers were quick to pay tribute to Norman Lear today as news of his death spread through the artistic community.
“He was the kindest and gentlest man,” Jennifer Aniston wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. “When you were in his presence, you were the only one in the room. He made everyone feel this.”
“Goodnight Norman,” tweeted Jon Stewart. “Love you. Thanks for raising me.”
In a statement provided to Deadline, George Clooney wrote, “It’s hard to reconcile that at 101 years old, Norman Lear is gone too soon. The entire world of reason just lost its greatest advocate and our family lost a dear friend. A giant walked in his shoes.”
Steven Canals, the co-creator of Pose – the type of groundbreaking series that can trace its lineage directly to Lear’s trendsetting ’70s shows – wrote, “I never introduced myself to Norman Lear,...

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

Latino WGA members and their allies descended upon Universal Studios en masse Monday beginning at 5 a.m. to picket on the seventh day of the Hollywood writers strike.
The early arrival for some came as picketers wanted to be visible to trucks attempting to enter through the studio’s gates. Several picket lines in Los Angeles and New York have turned trucks away since contract talks broke off May 1 between the writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The WGA West’s Latinx Writers Committee organized today’s action, which at its height grew to about 300 picketers in Universal City, marching across Lankershim Boulevard from the main gates of the studio to Telemundo and back.

What initially seems like a quick way to make money turns into a life-changing experience when she meets the women who become her chosen family and learns how powerful, profitable and prolific her voice can be.
The series is inspired by the true-life story of Sidibe, who is executive producing with Thembi Banks (Only Murders in the Building), Steven Canals (Pose), and Julie Bean (grown-ish), with Jill Kaplan to serve as a non-writing executive producer. Banks and Bean will be co-showrunners. Banks is writing...

Onyx Collective is bulking up.
The Disney-owned brand, which is expressly focused on programming from creators of color and other underrepresented voices, announced Saturday a pilot pickup for a Gabourey Sidibe comedy, tentatively titled 1266, and a straight-to-series order for a multi-party documentary series about Black Twitter. The latter is based on Jason Parham’s widely read 2021 Wired article, “A People’s History of Black Twitter.”
The comedy, which hails from corporate cousin 20th Television, is inspired by Sidibe’s life story. The Academy Award-nominated actress, who rose to fame with Lee Daniels’ 2009 film Precious, will star as Gabby Brixton. In the pilot, Brixton’s life is believed to be aimless ― she’s living with her mom and making half-hearted attempts to become a singer/model. When she’s fired from yet another job, she turns to phone sex. What initially seems like a quick way to make money becomes a...

At least five were killed and around 20 injured after a 22-year-old gunman opened fire in Club Q before the shooter was subdued by patrons and eventually arrested by police. Latinos in Hollywood have been a topic of discussion for years, and due to the cancellation of critically acclaimed HBO Max series "Gordita Chronicles," the shelving of the Leslie Grace-starring 90 million Batgirl movie, and the casting of James Franco as Fidel Castro (double whammy), Hollywood has recently generated criticism from Latinx people in and out of the industry. US Latinos account for 20 percent of all US Americans, with a buying power of over 1.7 trillion, and as avid entertainment consumers, we are the ones who showed up at the box office in 2020 and 2021. We have to turn this pivotal moment into a turning point of positive change for Latinxs in Hollywood.
To move forward, we have to understand the current state of Hollywood's film and television Latinx representation. This requires us to analyze our complicated history. I'll focus on two of the most glaring issues at hand: the never-ending stereotypes...

The 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Drama Writing has 211 submissions, which will once again result in seven nominees in this category, something that has been consistent since 2020. Before we dive into this year’s likely writing contenders, let’s remember that last year’s winner was “The Crown” (“War” by Peter Morgan) and the other nominees were “The Boys” (“What I Know” by Rebecca Sonnenshine), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (“Home” by Yahlin Chang), “Lovecraft Country” (“Sundown” by Misha Green), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 13: The Jedi” by Dave Filoni), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 16: The Rescue” by Jon Favreau) and “Pose”.
None of these shows will be in contention this year, as they have either concluded or did not air any new episodes in the eligibility timeline, so this category will have a whole new batch of nominees. “Better Call Saul,” “Ozark” and “Succession” took 6/7 slots in this category two years ago the last time they were eligible,...

There are a whopping 237 submissions for Best Drama Directing on the 2022 Emmys ballot, which will yield seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Crown” (“War” by Jessica Hobbs) and the other nominees were “Bridgerton” (“Diamond of the First Water” by Julie Anne Robinson), “The Crown” (“Fairytale” by Benjamin Caron), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (“The Wilderness” by Liz Garbus), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 9: The Jedi” by Jon Favreau) and “Pose” (“Series Finale” by Steven Canals).
The only eligible returnee out of this bunch is “Bridgerton,” which entered three episodes of its second season for consideration. It may have a harder time getting back in as “Ozark” and “Succession” will be back to reclaim their crowns, having prevailed in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Winner Jason Bateman is back on the ballot for the “Ozark” series finale, after being absent for the third season, and joining him will be his co-star Laura Linney for her directorial debut,...

On Monday morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. (HFPA) announced the nominations for the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards — and what followed was near radio silence.
In the days leading up to the Golden Globe nominations, it was unclear what impact the announcement would have — and in the near 12 hours since the film and television nominations were revealed, the answer has been not much. The HFPA, the organization behind the show, is mired in controversy over the historic lack of diversity in its membership and for reportedly questionable ethical practices. Since the scandal exploded in February, the organization made moves to welcome more journalists of color into its ranks and institute new bans on gifts, but the A-list talent that once flocked to its telecast is steering clear until more time has passed.

Who knew Victoria Alonso could sing?
Marvel Studios’ president of physical and postproduction, visual effects and animation production broke out into song not once, but twice when she was presented with the Visionary Award at the Outfest Legacy Awards on Saturday night at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
She sang a verse of B.o.B’s “Beautiful Girl All Over the World” to her wife, Imelda Corcoran. Toward the end of her remarks, Alonso warbled “I Am What I Am” from “La Cage Aux Folles” in English and Spanish.
Musical chops aside, Alonso delivered a passionate speech about LGBTQ equality and visibility. “We have tried to stir it up and sometimes the critics are not with us. That’s Ok. That’s Ok,” Alonso said of her work at Marvel. “We thank you for being a critic. We thank you for writing about us. And the fans will decide.

“Pose” co-creator Steven Canals was honored at The Norman Lear Center’s 2021 Sentinel Awards for the series’ accurate depiction of the HIV/AIDS epidemic amongst the LGBTQ community.
“This is a story about the Black and Brown LGBTQ+ community living and dying of HIV/AIDS,” Canals said.
With four Emmy wins, “Pose” follows New York City’s African American and Latino LGBTQ ballroom culture scene in the 1980s through the late 1990s. “Struggling with poverty and addiction, and battling economic disparity — it’s not your typical late night fare, but what an honor it has been to shine a light on our oft forgotten history,” Canals said. “‘Pose’ is legacy work, and the cultural significance and contributions of our forebears, who in the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with no resources, no support from the government and a lack of access to quality medical care, still managed to...

Wrapping up production on “Insecure” in June was an emotional experience for writer and executive producer Amy Aniobi. Not only was the beloved HBO comedy ending, but world events made production even more complex.
“Creating that final season in a pandemic felt like the hardest thing any of us had ever done,” Aniobi tells Variety. “It was just like pulling teeth to be funny when you’re sad, but I think we pulled it off.”
Fortunately, the cast and crew of “Insecure” feels like family — Aniobi and creator-star Issa Rae have known each other since Stanford, first teaming up for “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” web series, and now working on the new HBO Max comedy “Rap Sh*t” in Miami, which is where Aniobi Zooms in from. But, she notes, not every young writer has that support system, which became increasingly apparent after the murder of George Floyd.

The Drama League is devoting substantial resources to overhaul its marquee program, the Directors Project, in an effort to better support creatives at all stages of their careers.
Led by artistic director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks and executive director Bevin Ross, the League is investing millions over the next decade through new and expanded programs. The revamped initiative is the result of a company-wide evaluation that was undertaken during the pandemic, a period in which many who work in the arts lost work.
The broadened Directors Project will offer fellowships for early-stage directors, programs to help mid-career theater directors transition into film and television, and assistantships for young Bipoc creatives to shadow established Bipoc directors. The different programs vary in length and run up to two years.
Through conversations with more than 100 artists, artistic leaders, producers and community members, the newly designed program has been refocused to provide financial stability, well-being and guaranteed employment opportunities.

Steven Canals revealed what his acceptance speech would’ve sounded like at the Emmy Awards if his groundbreaking series Pose had been celebrated for its final season Sunday night.
“Well, @poseonfx didn’t take home any Emmys last night but that doesn’t change how proud I am of our final season. Here’s what I would have said had I made it up on that stage. All of this will always hold true,” he captioned the photo of his prepared speech.
“The reason I get to stand up here as an openly queer Afro-Latin person is because of my ancestors,” his speech opens. “In 1969, the fight for the Trans and Queer liberation reached a fever pitch, built on the backs of the women, who happened to be Trans and Lesbian. Who happened to be Black and Latina. And so I want to honor Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major,...

The Pose co-creator, executive producer, writer and director prepared comments as a way to meet the moment. And while the groundbreaking FX series did not win any trophies during the telecast — last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies saw Pose win for contemporary costumes, hairstyling and makeup — he revealed today what he planned to say at the podium.
