Why Did CSI Miami Kill Off Rory Cochrane's Speed?

CSI: Miami saw many main characters leave, including Tim "Speed" Speedle, whose carelessness led to his tragic death in season 3. Speed died due to a lack of maintenance on his sidearm, which allowed an attacker to shoot him in a heartbreaking scene with Horatio. Despite actor Rory Cochrane's amicable departure from the show, he felt Speed's death was "pretty lame" and could have been more imaginative.
