No major fandom is immune to toxicity, and although this isn’t to say such fanbases surrounding major IPs are toxic in their entirety, a vocal minority, especially in the age of social media, often fosters a negative environment. This remains much more evident when it comes to Star Wars, arguably one of the biggest IPs in business, and its lack of direction since Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm has only contributed to the toxic subset.

But amidst studio misfires, it’s the actors who often end up paying the cost, especially when it comes to people of color in major roles, which was apparent with the racist backlash against John Boyega. In addition to Boyega, his co-star Kelly Marie Tran also found herself at the center of the racist backlash, and like him, the actress has opted to call the toxicity out.
