Kelly Marie Tran Reveals How She Coped With Star Wars Toxicity
When Kelly Marie Tran was cast as Rose Tico in 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, she was thrilled to be the first Asian woman to have a starring role in the franchise. But then it all went wrong due to some toxic fans.
Tran was subjected to racist and sexist hate online, with trolls piling on her for her appearance and her character's actions. Speaking to Business Insider, the actor said that she went to therapy to deal with the bullying. "I still hold that experience with such fondness in my heart because there was so much creativity, professionalism, and artistry on those sets," Tran said. "It allowed me into these audition rooms I never would've been in a million years if I hadn't done that job."
According to Tran, the experience of being trolled and bullied set her down "the scary path of figuring out how to heal.
