• Warning: Spoilers
This film is called "The Devious Path" or the German original title is "Abwege" and I saw there are a handful alternate titles out there. Anyway, if you see black-and-white, silent and Pabst behind the camera, then you will know immediately what to expect here, drama with horror elements. Austrian actor Gustav Diessl is the lead actor and he appeared in a handful other films from that time too, so silent film enthusiasts may know him. I personally was not too aware of the name, but the female lead Brigitte helm is of course a household name to everybody who likes the eternal classic "Metropolis", just like I do. But back to "Abwege". The film will have its 90th anniversary soon and came out right between World Wars I and II to put it in a historic perspective. I see several runtimes indicated here, so parts of this movie may be lost. But i still have to say with the version i saw running for over 90 minutes that this was already way too much. The plot and script was simply not good enough for anything over 70 minutes sadly. It's not the actors' fault, but the way they and the story were written I rarely cared for either of them or what would happen to them. As a whole, this is nowhere near the best I have seen in terms of German black-and-white silent films. Watch something else instead.
