Joaquin Phoenix plays a perfect character for himself. He plays John Callahan who's story starts out as an unambitious drunk who parties hard and makes bad decisions. Such as getting into a car with a drunk driver. That driver smashes into a tree paralyzing Callahan from the waist down. Continuing a drink and feel sorry about his predicament, he decides to join AA which helps him straighten his life out to find a purpose, which later becomes creating irreverent cartoons for a popular magazine. Phoenix Is great as he portrays an array of emotions and does a solid job as a paraplegic and plays well off of Jonah Hill's character; the AA group leader. This is a very straightforward narrative and hits all the expected notes it didn't always flow smoothly from point to point and the cinematography wasn't anything notable.
