• Warning: Spoilers
Life on Mars is one of the greatest T. V. Dramas ever. It left us with Sam and the team stuck in 1973 after it appeared that Sam had actually awoke from a coma and gone back to his own time line.

His love for Annie and his feelings of not being alive in the present lead him to take his own life at which point he returned to 73 to help save Hunts team.

Roll on a couple of years into the present future and D. I. Alex Drake who studies psychology is also studying the Suicide of Sam Tyler in the present after he woke from his coma and left various messages about his time in 73 when it felt so real and that was why he was taking his life.

So Drake already with knowledge of Hunt and Co tragically ends up being killed and this time we find our subject waking in 1981 and the team in London.

Ashes tells more of a story as to why and how they are there, where Sam and Annie have disappeared to and who is Gene Hunt for real.

In a top 5 of the greatest Dramas for Terrestrial T. V. ever both Mars and Ashes appear and probably both in the top 3.

Both together are 40 hours of genius.
