A fifteen year-old girl seeks an abortion in an African nation under Muslim rule. As an American Catholic, I am aware of the role of religion and personal choice. Maria is shamed by her village as an unmarried pregnant girl. The men rule women's lives with an iron fist. Theocratic domination is frightening and the lead actresses, as mother and daughter, are excellent but this is an extremely depressing film.
