He was charged with sandalwood & ivory smuggling and poaching of more than 1000 elephants in the scrub lands and forests in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. He was wanted for killing approximately 184 people (includes innocent People), about half of whom were police officers and forest officials and he kidnapped major politicians & Rajkumar for ransom Demand. The battle to capture Veerappan cost the governments of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over Rs. 100 crores. At the end Killed by Tamil Nadu Special Task Force members at a checkpoint, when the bandit was travelling in an ambulance driven by a disguised policeman.
