Dallas socialite Joy Davis Aylor is aware that her husband Larry is having an affair. Larry is a successful contractor who got his start with financial help from Joy's father. Joy professes envy over the fact that Larry bought his girlfriend, Rozanne Gailiunas, a fur coat, but never bought one for Joy. Joy hires a hit-man to kill Rozanne; he enters Rozanne's home posing as a deliveryman, strangles her and shoots her twice in the head. Rozanne's body is discovered by her four-year-old son after he awakens from a nap and goes into her room to look for her. Investigators question Larry Aylor, Joy Aylor and Rozanne's estranged husband Peter Gailiunas, but are unable to make an arrest based on any evidence. Several years later, after attempts at reconciliation, Larry and Joy are heading for divorce. Joy invites her husband to meet for horseback riding and sends two killers to meet him instead. He escapes, but suspects that his wife has attempted to have him killed. Joy's sister, to whom Joy had made certain confidential comments, alerts the police to Aylor's guilt and Aylor is arrested. While out on bail, she skips the country.
