(Sigh) Did,- did we need ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘? Seriously, did we? So, funny story — the day I ended up watching this was the day I happen to run into a very fun short animation piece online, where an angry Death Star architect goes into a rant about how he shouldn’t be blamed for the Death Star being destroyed by Luke Skywalker and how his design was flawless, except for the fact that, I think the term was, Magic Space Wizards or something like that, were around. Here was the original post (via College Humor), it’s really funny.
Anyway, spoilers, coincidence, this is the film that explains how the Death Star was able to be destroyed by one shot from Luke. (Long thinking pause) I think I liked it better when the answer was Magic Space Wizards.
Anway, look–I’m not a ‘Star Wars‘ guy,...

MSNBC chairman Andy Lack is determined to replace prime-time host Lawrence O’Donnell in the 10 p.m. Et time slot with Brian Williams after O’Donnell’s current contract is up in four weeks, a network insider told TheWrap. O’Donnell’s show, “The Last Word,” has been a ratings hit lately with the red-hot Rachel Maddow serving as its lead-in. The clock is ticking on Lawrence O’Donnell’s MSNBC contract, and multiple sources are telling Huffington Post that the cable network doesn’t appear to be interested in renewing his show, “The Last Word” despite a recent surge in the ratings. With only four weeks left on his contract, HuffPost reports that O’Donnell’s team has yet to hear from the network to negotiate a new deal. Although it’s customary for networks not to discuss contracts in mid-negotiations, multiple sources say that no negotiations have even begun. Networks typically lock in new terms months before talent contracts...

Movies on Demand has another month of audience favorites in store, including some of the most popular titles of the year so far. Check out five of our favorite films from the upcoming month below, as well as the full list of great movies available throughout May.

Raoul Peck’s documentary about the life and work of James Baldwin is a stunning tribute to the writer’s vital work. Even thirty years after his death, Baldwin’s words still cut to the heart of issues confronting American society. With performances of Baldwin’s writing from narrator Samuel L. Jackson, Peck provides a deeply human gateway to understanding the achievements and contributions of a man who still has much to say about how our country understands race.
2) “The Salesman” (Available May 2)

On Sunday's Last Week Tonight, John Oliver slammed President Donald Trump for defending Bill O'Reilly amid the Fox News host's sexual harassment scandal.
Over the past 15 years, O'Reilly has paid almost $13 million in settlements to five women who either worked for or appeared on his popular Fox News show, The O'Reilly Factor. The host engaged in "verbal abuse, lewd comments, unwanted comments" and "phone calls in which it sounded as if [he] was masturbating," The New York Times recently reported.

Louis C.K. opened his fourth time hosting Saturday Night Live with an edgy, electrifying 10-minute monologue where the comedian touched on racist chickens, giraffes and seedy roadside motels.

C.K. reasoned that it's okay for chickens to be prejudice because "their species murder rate is 100 percent."

Much like I seem to find myself saying around this point each and every single year…time really flies. Believe it or not, we’re now a full three months into the 2017 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate for the year. Wow. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been. Since now is the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer releases and counter programming independent fare ramps up, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2017 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. Once again, here goes nothing! So far, 2017 has been on the weaker side of things, at least in my humble opinion. There’s been a few legitimately great films,...

What did you see this weekend besides Emma Watson twirling in that yellow gown? Disney spent $160 million making the movie and probably another huge chunk of millions promoting it but they were rewarded with stacks and stacks of gold. It nearly became the top grossing movie of the year (thus far) in a single weekend!
Since I'd already seen the Disney musical, I spent the weekend with a revisit of Grease 2 (more on that soon) as well as some DVR catch up (I will miss you when you're gone Real O'Neals - especially you Martha Plimpton and Matt Oberg). And yes I also tried with Iron Fist but it became white noise in the background as it was too dull to focus sole attention on. Identity politics aside, Finn Jones + the script are the biggest problems as there is so much filler and the hero is the least likeable character on the show,...

Superman Lives, The Green Hornet and sadly now Clerks III: here’s a rundown of the Kevin Smith films we’ll probably never see...
Kevin Smith has always had to fight to get his films off the ground: he started his filmmaking career by maxing out multiple credit cards to self-finance Clerks, and more recently, legend has it, it was only Johnny Depp’s decision to come on board as a wacky supporting character that allowed Smith to secure financing for his walrus-centric horror flick Tusk.
Smith has, across his career, been offered several barmy jobs (he rejected a chance to pen Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian back in the 90s) and he’s also signed up for a lot of projects that never got past the script phase.
The latter camp of could’ve-beens is what we’re talking about today, following that news that Clerks III...

During its development, production or eventual distribution, what specific challenge of communication did, or will your film, face? How did you deal with it, or how are you planning to deal with it? The communication challenge in executing The Last Word was thematic. With issues of aging or mortality, the challenge is balancing tone. That is achieved by communicating to everyone (cast, crew and, in turn, the audience) the specific tone. We tried keeping the story human and offbeat, making it emotionally inclusive, and earning the emotional payoff via narrative investment in character. Thus you are letting the audience grow […]...

I recently wrote in relation to a review of "The Big Show" that circus movies have gone the way of the Model T. You can add to that another genre of film that used to be a Hollywood staple- the safari movies in which the hero was a great white hunter. Changing social attitudes make it unlikely we'd ever again cheer some rock-jawed leading man as he unloads some hi caliber bullets into a grazing elephant or a lazing hippo. The last word on such films was Clint Eastwood's woefully underrated (and woefully under-seen) 1990 film "White Hunter, Black Heart", which was loosely based on the hunting obsessions of director John Huston during production of "The African Queen". Nevertheless, jungle-themed adventures are still the stuff of cinematic thrills in the minds of retro movie lovers. One of the best is "Rampage", a 1963 opus directed by Phil Karlson...

It's a scorching summer day, and four neighborhood boys are trying to beat the heat by lounging in the shade near a junkyard's water pump with a refreshing drink. Stx’s $50m play, Amazon Studios’ charm offensive and other takeaways from this year’s market.
The sunlight at the recent Cannes Film Festival may have confounded early forecasts of interminable rain but the outlook for the film business remains stormy.
While several Us companies with points to prove strutted their stuff and international buyers circled must-have titles, the struggle to survive in a dynamic post-2008 landscape remains the most urgent narrative.
That was reflected in a Croisette that seemed quieter than usual, although attendees responded to opportunities when they arose. Market attendance was up year-on-year by several points according to Jerome Paillard, executive director of the Marche du Film, although there was anecdotal evidence of several companies sending leaner teams.

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. has hired Wonder Woman scribe Jason Fuchs to work on the script for their long-gestating Lobo movie. The last word we had on this one was back in 2012 when San Andreas director Brad Peyton signed on to helm the picture, but because there had been no news since then most of us assumed it was destined to remain in development hell. Could the success of a certain R-rated X-Men spinoff be responsible for Lobo's revival? I'd say it's a safe enough bet. Though Don Payne had written a script previously, apparently "Fuchs will start from scratch with his own take on Lobo". What do you guys think of this news? Sound off below ya fraggin' bastiches.

The last couple of months have seen the 'superstars-in-their-own-right' Hrithik Roshan and Kangna Ranaut indulging in a war of words. While the mudslinging was not done directly by either of them; Hrithik had taken to Twitter and (indirectly) hinted at Kangna stating "There are more chances of me having had an affair with the Pope than any of the (I'm sure wonderful) women the media has been naming. Thanks but no thanks". On the other hand, Kangna Ranaut, in one of her interviews also took a (indirect) dig at Hrithik Roshan by saying that there were many lame rumours which were doing the rounds and that even a dumb ass could tell where these rumours were coming from. She added that she did not know as to why the exes do silly things to get one's attention and that, for her, 'that chapter' was over. She also added that she doesn't dig graves.

I Hate wine! Seriously, no kidding, I cannot drink it, smell it and I don’t like to talk about it. The origin of this distaste for fermented grape juice? It was when I was in the Navy (there he goes again!) I was on liberty in Brindisi, Italy (Bill remembers!) We were in a restaurant on a bright, sunny Italian Sunday afternoon. We ordered food and wine. The wine came in pitchers, not bottles. I don’t recall the food ever arriving, don’t remember leaving the restaurant, going back to the ship, none of that, complete blackout.
Literally one minute in the restaurant, the next lying face down in my rack strangling on my own sick. I won’t go into any more sordid details, I’ll spare you that. Sufficient to note I was in trouble with the Navy, had gotten horribly sick on a liberty boat,...

In 2003, Billy Crudup left his then-pregnant girlfriend of eight years, Mary-Louise Parker, for actress Claire Danes -- but it's Parker who has the final say in her new memoir, Dear Mr. You. The very name is probably enough to start some Warner Bros. executives weeping into their hands after years of torturous development that has so far yielded a lot of script drafts, plenty of fantasy casting and even some director interest, but no actual movies. Yes, despite all the trouble it has had getting anything in gear on the adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s genre-smashing anime, Warners has toughed it out, with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way still aboard to produce however many films do finally emerge. The last word on the film was in June of this year, when Sons Of Anarchy veteran and current Daredevil co-showrunner Marco J. One such example is Mark Pellington’s The Last Word, which has Amanda Seyfried and Shirley MacLaine attached to star. The Last Word finds MacLaine as an opinionated woman who has decided that, far from leaving her obituary in the hands of someone else, she’ll work on it now, before she dies. She’s teamed up with a young writer (Seyfried) from the local paper, who thinks they should dig deeper to find the real story. Cue a journey that will help MacLaine’s bitter character find her passion for life again. "This is a funny, heartwarming and emotionally tender tale of life,” says Pellington. It explores the true source of power for independent women, and is a riotous life affirming film about the lessons learned through...

30 Rock is rocking on Tuesday as MSNBC executives finally have something to smile about. The network, which has been been on one of the worst ratings streaks in its history over the last year, saw double-digit growth during the day and at night. MSNBC’s daytime lineup was up 17 percent in viewers and 4 percent in the 25-54 demo compared to the same time last year. In primetime, the network spiked 12 percent in viewers and 3 percent in the demo year-over-year. The “Lean Forward” network saw key spikes in many of its shows in the Monday-Friday ratings: “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” was.

George Takei is more than happy to have a rational, reasonable debate about marriage equality. In fact, he did just that with Donald Trump about two years ago. "As a matter of fact, I did have a conversation with him [Donald Trump]. As you may know, I did the Apprentice show, and during a press conference, I challenged him to have lunch with me so that we can discuss marriage equality," he shared during a Monday appearance on MSNBC's The Last Word. "This was, I think, two years ago. And I fully expected him to demur, saying I'm too busy, but he did accept. And we had that lunch. "And when I, again, met him, he said, you...

When it comes to broadcast agencies that have taken issue with his controversial statements about Mexicans, Donald Trump's default response has been to threaten Univision and NBC with lawsuits. Lawrence O'Donnell spoke on The Last Word about NBC's decision, talking about the business effect it would have on Miss USA before getting to Trump's reputation of threatening lawsuits that he does not actually pursue.

Bill Murray can even make falling off a chair while drunk seem charming and charismatic! The 64-year-old actor appeared on Tuesday night's penultimate episode of Late Night With David Letterman where he hilariously jumped out of a cake and chugged vodka with the 68-year-old late night host. But all that drinking may have been a little to much for Murray to handle because his appearance on MSNBC's The Last Word later that night didn't go so smoothly. First Murray drunkenly stumbled onto the Last Word set while host Lawrence O'Donnell was still discussing Elizabeth Warren. O'Donnell convinced Murray to head backstage until his segment. Later on, the St. Vincent star made his way back to the...

After Bill Murray had one final sit-down with David Letterman on Tuesday night, he had a harder time staying in his chair during another TV appearance a few hours later.
The actor was caught on air losing his balance and falling out of a chair during an appearance on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell Tuesday.
Murray, 64, was attempting to grab a seat before the live show when he toppled. After cameras caught his fall, he told O'Donnell, "I just did the Letterman show, then went to dinner, had oysters, rosé wine, red wine and duck – and red wine.

The KissMuch of my problem with so-called experimental cinema is a matter of language, and my marriage to it as both a viewer and a critic, despite language’s inevitable failure in the face of other forms of meaning. Some of my difficulty is based on background and affinities, some of it exposure and/or familiarity; most is plain obduracy. For whatever reason we may chose to fixate on, I have a hard time letting non-narrative films tell me how to read them beyond the sense I can put into words. After all, I am inarticulate without them. One friend says the trick is to bring the films “down” to the most fundamental ways in which they work, how the pieces may “add up”—but again this is a metaphor, which is of course the premise of language—an arbitrary equation of different things—and awfully teleological in a realm...

Warner Bros. is still developing a remake of its 1976 movie Logan’s Run after initial reports announcing the project surfaced back in 2011. At that point in the early development stages, the white-hot duo of director Nicolas Winding Refn and leading man Ryan Gosling stirred up plenty of interest in the remake. And for a while, their attachment kept it buoyant, as scripts were rustled up and financiers gathered. But sometimes enough’s enough for Hollywood’s heavy-hitters, and in later 2012, Gosling and Refn exited.
Word on the project now hails from The Tracking Board, who claims to have intel suggesting that the studio are hoping for a fresh take on the sci-fi classic. It has recently become known that there are more female gamers than male, there was a general suspicion that the industry had yet to recognise this statistic. After all, the market is dominated by adrenalin-packed, male influenced titles such as Call of Duty, while similar titles and characters also command the attention of the mainstream media.
You can also argue that this trend has been prominent in the comic book market too. If you delve beyond the surface, however, you will see a subtle change in the approach of writers and developers. More specifically, established studio brands such as Marvel and DC have both unveiled new comic book line-ups and characters, which include potentially iconic female stars of tomorrow.
The Focus on Women: The Comic Book Characters for the Next Generation
The announcement from both camps came on Friday, with Marvel generating slightly higher levels of interest through social media interaction.

The TV world is always wild, and some of the cable networks are still figuring out exactly what it is they’re trying to get out of shows, as they attempt to appeal to whatever demographic they have decided is “theirs,” but the cancellation of Longmire was a shock to a lot of people.
That’s especially true when you consider the ratings it was getting.
Of course, saner heads prevailed, and the show was picked up by Netflix. The last word I head on it was that production is meant to start in March.
At any rate, the show is a great one, and stood out during its three season run as one that was trying to set its own mark.
The third season release is headed your way, and you want to mark your calendar for this one. It isn’t exactly loaded with special features, but it hardly matters with this show.

While we wait to see if we actually get another Bill & Ted sequel, I thought I’d put together of list of Fun Facts for the movie that started it all: Bill & Ted’s Excelent Adventure. This was such a ridiculous yet extremely enjoyable movie. It starred Alex Winter and George Carlin and launched the career of Keanu Reeves. I really hope that we get to see Bill & Ted 3. It would be so fun to revisit these characters after all these years. I tried to show the movie to my kids a few months ago, and they just didn't bite. I guess you just had to be growing up in the 1980s to fully appreciate its excellence.

New York - Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice" is probably the most accessible novel he's ever written, set in 1970, a sort of hyper-clever nod to the Raymond Chandler tradition of Los Angeles detective stories. As much as I wanted to like his work, I was never able to really dig in and enjoy Pynchon's books. They felt to me like something to be conquered. With "inherent Vice," I finally found myself caught up in not just his language but with his characters and the world that he was describing. It was my in to the rest of his work, and so it holds a special place for me among his novels. Pynchon is one of literature's true pilgrims, a guy perpetually pushing forward against the constraints of what pop culture will bear. His first book "V." is the story of a discharged sailor who loses himself in the artistic community...
