Are you sick of the whole Representative Joe Wilson controversy yet? Were you sick of it four or five days ago? Jon Stewart and The Daily Show are too, and last night they showed how the people asking for an apology from Wilson are being hypocritical, and how both sides do this all the time and then ask for an apology when the other side does it.
In other words, politics really suck.

A lot of Conan O'Brien's bits go on way too long. This segment is a lot longer than I thought it would be, but it's okay because there are some great payoffs. Stuntman Steven Ho showed up on The Tonight Show last night to punch and kick Conan and to make him jump through a window. This was practiced, of course, but it could have gone wrong. Conan is pretty funny with stuff like this.
(Side note: TV Tattle wonders if Conan is having trouble getting guests since this is Ho's third appearance since June. Or maybe Conan just loves doing stunts.)

The Tory Burch storefront. From PatrickMcMullan.com. It's not every night in New York City when you have more than a dozen events to attend in multiple neighborhoods within a five-hour time period, but that was the task yesterday during Fashion’s Night Out. Strategically starting uptown, the first stop was the Missoni boutique on Madison Avenue where Margherita Missoni was on hand to give guests style tips on creating their own personalized limited-edition Missoni tote bags. “I definitely feel like people are out and about and excited about tonight,” said the heiress, who had a to-do list of her own for later. “I haven’t had a chance to go around yet, but I want to go to Bergdorf Goodman and see what is going on. Apparently it’s a madhouse.” Chatting with Margherita was stylist Rachel Zoe and her husband Rodger Berman. Zoe has a busy week ahead...

Matt Damon was on The Late Show last night to promote his new film The Informant! As usual, he did his Matthew McConaughey impersonation for Dave and they also talked about a recent web rumor that Damon had died (really? I guess I missed that one).
This led to Damon telling another story about the Venice Film Festival involving George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and a stripping journalist.

For a split second I thought that when Jimmy Fallon announced on the latest edition of "Beef Solvers" last night that the real Keith Olbermann and Glenn Beck were going to come out on stage and do a funny bit about their ongoing feud. But I quickly remembered that those two guys really do hate each other and will never be up for any "let's make a funny cameo on late night TV" bit. They'll gladly savage each other on their own shows, but not together in harmony.
So Jimmy got two audience members to take their place. Let's see if Keith or Glenn mention this on their shows tonight.

Who and What Are Up and Down and Why Peaches Geldorf ↓ Taking risqué dressing to a whole other level, the "It" girl headed out for the night in London in a pair of battered black tights topped by extremely small denim shorts that gave passersby a full view of her plaid underpants. Upstaging the Hostess ↓ You'd think all eyes would have been on Maria Sharapova at the Tiffany and InStyle party for the tennis ace, but she was promptly trumped by the appearance of birthday girl Blake Lively, who managed to get the ballphotographers firmly in her court.

Vogue editor (and Devil Wears Prada subject) Anna Wintour was on The Late Show last night. She came out in her trademark sunglasses but didn't wear them for the interview (that would have been fantastic). It would have been great to see Wintour shagging flies.

Who and What Are Up and Down and Why House Guests ↑ Jay McInerney and Anne Hearst McInerney's Hamptons home was the site of the annual gala for the Shriver-family-founded charity Best Buddies. Among the attendees: Amanda Hearst, New York governor David Paterson, Alejandro Santo Domingo, Campion and Tatiana Platt, and Nacho Figueras. Overstaying Your Welcome ↓ Attending the U.K.'s V Fest concert as a spectator on Saturday, Amy Winehouse was invited onstage by the Specials at the end of the band's set. That would have been a positive way for the rehabbed singer to mark her return to the U.K. performance circuit, but then she also had to join Babyshambles front man Pete Doherty during his gig, where she didn't sing—she just kept kissing his cheek and whispering in his ear.

Who and What Are Up and Down and Why Public Nudity ↓ Cricket games are not typically considered the place to experiment with sheer clothing, yet this is exactly what singer Lily Allen did in London when she removed her jacket to reveal quite a lot to spectators during England's match against Australia. Francisco Costa ↑ The Calvin Klein designer's sophisticated status was cemented at the New York City opening of C.K.'s shop within Saks as Alexa Chung, Elettra Wiedemann, Melissa George and Lauren Santo Domingo flocked to the designer's side.

Not so for Ronnie Wood's 20-year-old girlfriend, who was spotted trailing behind the Rolling Stone and passing out in a cab after dinner at London restaurant J Sheekey. The September Issue ↑ Funny how the movie's New York City premiere serendipitously coincided with the newsstand release of Vogue's actual September issue. The crowd at the MoMA screening included Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington, MTV host Alexa Chung, Renée Zellweger, Sienna Miller, Diddy, and actresses Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan, and Marc Jacobs.

While I don't agree that most people get their news from The Daily Show or that it's more important than the news, I think it is must see TV because it's usually going to show you something in a way you've never seen before, and it will change the way that you watch news (whether it's Fox News or MSNBC, it doesn't matter). That's a good thing.

Who and What Are Up and Down and Why Brad Pitt ↓ Guests at New York City's Cinema Society and Hugo Boss screening of Inglourious Basterds were disappointed by the leading man's absence, made curious by the fact that he managed to attend last week's premiere of The Time Traveler's Wife, a film he produced. Making up for the loss at the after-party at the new Standard Hotel were Quentin Tarantino, Diane Kruger, George Hamilton, Mike Myers, Chace Crawford, and Agyness Deyn, along with pretty much every other city society figure. Not content to let his ex-wife, Madonna, corner the market on model-dating, 40-year-old director Ritchie was spotted last night having dinner with Australian former supermodel Elle Macpherson at Notting Hill Brassiere in West London. Curmudgeon alert. Heroes is a show I have a rather intense love/hate relationship with. I want to be a total fanboy but unfortunately, various evil elements in writing and production are conspiring to make me throw (soft) objects at the big screen. Last night was no exception. Once again we return to the not so vaguely Xmen themed story of the Heroes hunted. They are dangerous and must be stopped. I’m usually out on Sunday nights, so I haven’t gotten a chance to catch this season of The Amazing Race. Fortunately, I was home last night, so I got to see one of the funniest reality show moments in recent memory. And even more fortunately, CBS.com has the clip on its site so that you can see it, too. Here’s the set up: the teams are in Russia, and must complete one of two tasks. One of those tasks is to learn how to march like the Russian army. Dan and Andrew, the bumbling frat boy team who managed to lose their shoes last week, chose this task—only to discover that Dan is the least coordinated person in the entire world. The second half of this season has been dominated by old news episodes so far, which made last night’s episode even more amazing. Airing just the day after Barack Obama was elected our next president, South Park managed to not only create an entire episode about Obama’s victory but even got an animated version of his victory speech, and McCain’s concession speech, in there. While you could argue that the South Park folks predicted Obama would win and were able to take their sweet time with an episode devoted to it, there’s no way they could have known what those speeches would be, so that segment, at the very least, was basically done the same day that the episode aired. Nice work, guys. Onto the episode itself, I liked it. I thought the sophisticated Sarah Palin with an English accent was brilliant, as was John McCain...

Casting news for The Last Night hit a new high. Variety just reported that Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet are set to star in the movie. The film is the directorial debut of Massy Tadjedin, who also wrote the script for the film.
The production for the film will begin in New York next month. Gaumont is financing the film, will handle worldwide sales and will distribute in France Wechsler produces.
The story is about a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love. This sounds like a mix and match of both Love Actually and Closer. I just hope it turns out into a mature fare.
