  • Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal (1986) : Movie Review -

This Sensational and Taboo-breaking lovestory by Padmarajan has more to offer than his high-rated Thoovanathumbikal. I intentionally mentioned Thoovanathumbikal here because when i see at the ratings of these two films, one surely look high-rated undeservingly. This is strictly my personal opinion as i have recently seen Thoovanathumbikal and for me it didn't match the hype. On the other side, Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal isn't hyped as high as Thoovanathumbikal but for me it has fared better. The film did match the level of expectations i had and I would say that rather it surpassed them. The film is about Solomon who falls in love with his neighbour, Sofia. However, things does not go smooth and he finds himself helpless when he realises about her family life being unacceptable to the society. One cute thing to notice in the film is that throughout the story, there are references to the Biblical book Song of Songs where it depicts the romantic dialogue between a young woman and her lover. In the climax we see conflicts reaching upto devastating level and the things shown there are simply taboo-breaking for any Romantic Drama by that time. Mohanlal once again shines as a matured actor. This time the role was quite simple so for him it wasn't anything to worry about. Shari looks beautiful as Sofia and Thilakan portrays a villainous father so well that you start hating his character and by the end you completely hate him. Vineeth as teenage boy looked fine and Kaviyoor Ponnamma plays a mother as perfectly as she could. Padmarajan's direction and vision plays a vital part in forming this uncompromising storytelling. For me, Thoovanathumbikal went wrong with the characters and became too predictable but here Padmarajan had me glued and clueless about one or two characters. So, overall a path-breaking content in mainstream romance.

    RATING - 8/10*

A sensitive portrayal of a mature love story which is lyrical and poetic as the music of the film. It is the most influential films of its era and still is called the greatest love story told in malayalam. Mohanlal takes acting to a greater level with his riveting performance and débutante Shari is fresh and appealing. This is a film which needs to be preserved and re- released because the true value of it is yet to be realised.THe script is very detailed and brings out the intrinsic lifestyle of the kerala catholic syrian Christian. The screenplay is the king just like all of director Padmarajan's other concepts and this is the best of his work closely followed by Thoovanathumbikal. The dialogues are crisp and powerful with a local touch. The music is still popular and the songs are very meaningful. The entire screenplay is worked around Solomon's songs from the bible and it keeps referring to the vineyards of solomon. The film is based on K Sudhakaran's novel and is the a great adaptation to the English translation which mean vineyard for us to dwell. What amazes me is after reading the novel by K Sudhakaran I understood that the screenplay of this film is based on the events that are not mentioned in the book. It traverses a path that exists but is not mentioned in the book. Thats the beauty of padmarajan's work. You need to read the book and see the film to unravel the film in totality.

Late Mr. Patmarajan has a habit. He loves to glue his viewers to the seat and hypnotize them by his unique movies. Like Aparan, Thoovana thumbikal, Kallan pavithran, Ennale etc. He does the same or even much further in Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal. Malayalam movie viewers still miss him.

In this love story, characters Solomon (Mohanlal) and Sofia (Shari) wins our heart. Whereas, the step father is the key role (Award winning role by Thilakan) that stays with us all the time. Perfect cast in every way. Superb photography, great screenplay and unique setting makes this movie a real gem. I wish men could have his heart when it comes to love...

Let's go to the villages, let us go to the vineyards and see if the grapes sprout and blossom into the pomegranate, where I will give you love Never forget the love of Malayalees from the mind Sophia's brother-in-law opposes Sommon and Sophia. These two neighbors are hostile. But Salam and Sophia did not like this. Finally, this love can end up in a tragedy ... this is the story of our film Vineyaprils.

I am not sure how Thoovanathumbikal received more stars than NPMT - I remember watching this movie one New Year eve and coming out with such optimism about life! It may be a personal choice and opinion. This movie is about human life and love after tragedies. The story ending is one of the best as in many Padmarajan movies. I could still hear the tanker blowing horn outside Sophia's house. Classic.
  • If you have not seen this movie, then you should! It's a masterpiece and in a class of its own.

A movie that was ahead of its times, that continues to remain relevant and will remain so for the foreseeable future. An evergreen film to cherish and celebrate the sheer brilliance and craftmanship of Padmarajan.

The background score, the songs, dialogues, script, screenplay, acting, location and you name it, all of them are outstanding! A must watch for all avid movie buffs!
  • The beauty of a movie is not truly known right after enjoying it. It is truly known when it stays in your heart, as a pleasant and cherished memory.

Namukka Parkkan Munthirithoppukal (Vineyards for us to Fly) is one such.

When sheer genius in direction and screenplay is applied on a movie of a romantic genre with its theme around nature, and topped by natural performances, and blended with the sweetest music, you will create a film of this nature.

I give a film 10/10 in IMDB when it's not just able to give me a smile at times, but at the right moments is able to bring out a tear. This film makes it happen.

After watching this film you are sure to look up and follow through on other movies created by this director, if you are truly a connoisseur of film, and you'll not be disappointed upon doing so. The director Padmarajan has created one after the other movies that simply create magic on screen.

This one just happens to be my favourite.
  • Whenever I visit Mysore,I simply look all around with a hope to find an RMR enterprises red tanker lorry with Solomon and Sofia in it, meandering across Mysore city.

The film sets a benchmark in all aspects be it ,the detailed and refined script, precise direction, extraordinary background score and songs and of course the performance of the lead actors. Thilakan sir as Pailokaran is just wow. The unpredictable climax was another Easter egg for the viewers, though experimental it created a huge impact among all the generations. Overall a beautifully woven piece of golden cinema.

Ps; Special thanks to Sylvia Crystal 😜

i guess the music by Johnson is everlasting too. the theme music of the movie which comes right at the beginning is haunting. it will remain etched in everyones memories. but due credit must be give to Thilakan and Mohan Lal . the movie wouldn have been complete without their performances. one still wonders how Thilakan has not received international accolades or even a national award being the kind of perfomer he is. Most if not all of Padmarajans movies dwell on relationships and are very character centric and again most if not all of his movies are classics. his early death was a big loss to Malayalam cinema. his contribution to the golden period of malayalam cinema was immense.
