Even Dr. Phil is getting in on TV’s frenzied battle for sports rights.
The daytime mainstay has long been known for doling out common-sense advice without any bull. Now that’s about to change.
Starting in July, a significant chunk of Professional Bull Riders events will be seen on Merit Street Media, the TV outlet launched earlier this year by Phil McGraw, who had previously hosted the syndicated “Dr. Phil” program between 2002 and 2023. As part of a new four-year deal, McGraw’s Merit Street will carry Pbr Teams events; the full schedule for Pbr Unleash The Beast, the sport’s individual competition series; and 50 episodes of “Pbr Now” a news, information, and analysis program.
“I think we’ll bring viewers to bull riding, and I think bull riding will bring viewers to us,” says McGraw in an interview.

Congress once again got pretty close to a physical brawl during a committee meeting this week, and the women of “The View” were disgusted — but also a little amused — by it on Wednesday morning. For host Sara Haines, it was reminiscent of a certain someone who went viral on “Dr. Phil.”
On Tuesday, Congressman Tim Burchett said he “got elbowed in the back” by Kevin McCarthy, while Senator Bernie Sanders had to actually break up a fight between Oklahoma senator Markwayne Mullin and the president of the Teamsters union, Sean O’Brien.
After a disagreement, Mullin said “You want to run your mouth? We can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here,” and challenged O’Brien to “stand your butt up.”
“Why did they all turn into the ‘catch me outside’ girl?” Haines mocked. “Like, they’re literally ready to beat the crap out of every single one of them.

Oh dear. The "Frasier" revival was going so well. Or at least it hadn't yet completely tarnished the legacy of one of the great sitcoms. This week, the third episode arrived, however, and things got a little too silly.
Since Kelsey Grammer's lovably pretentious psychiatrist returned to our screens, critics have been divided. The "Frasier" revival seemed doomed to fail after it was revealed that no one besides Grammer would be returning, and when the first episode dropped on Paramount+ on October 12, 2023, the response was mixed. /Film's Josh Spiegel had the correct opinion that the revival was neither disappointing nor remarkable, but many critics were just wrong, and frankly outright hostile to the series. USA Today's review remains the worst, referring to the "Frasier" revival as "unfunny, stilted and downright insipid."
In our nostalgia-obsessed monoculture, this kind of reaction makes sense. Did we need to revisit "Frasier" in 2023? David Hyde Pierce,...

Frasier is back, and while the new revival show is neither disappointing nor remarkable, it's at least managed not to sully the legacy of Frasier Crane. The original show remains a beloved sitcom, running for 11 seasons between 1993-2004 and following the character's exploits in his native Seattle. At the end of that series, the titular psychiatrist jets off to Chicago where, we learn from the revival show, he hosted a "Dr. Phil"-style talk show for many years. After his TV career ended and his marriage broke down, however, the lovably pompous doctor decided to head for Paris to write a new book. But in the first episode of the "Frasier" reboot, he stops in Boston to visit his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and is convinced to stay, not just to take up an offer of employment at Harvard, but to reconnect with Freddy and make up for years of shaky fathering.

ABC’s legendary sudser “General Hospital” is looking to defend its crown at the Daytime Emmys, landing 19 nominations this year — the most of any program — as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced contenders for the landmark 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
Last year, “General Hospital” was the big winner with five awards — including best daytime drama — as the telecast returned to a live, in-person event. This time out, NATAS first revealed multiple categories Tuesday night via various entertainment shows, and it looked like CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” — also in the middle of its 50th anniversary celebration — had taken an early lead.
But after all was tallied, CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” was actually next in line, with 14 nods, followed by “The Young and the Restless” (13), NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” (11) and the most-honored non-serial, the syndicated “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” also with 11.

Daytime TV is getting another major shake-up, which is a shocker.
Veteran syndication staples Judge Mathis and The People's Court have both been canceled.
The news will not be welcomed by fans, mainly because the shows will end fairly soon.
Variety first reported the news while revealing that the cancellations are "due to the declining nature of the daytime syndication landscape."
TV ratings across the board are shrinking, thanks partly to the increased presence of streaming services.
Viewers are watching TV on their terms.
Warner Bros. Unscripted Television made both shows in association with Telepictures Productions.

In both a noble gesture toward exhibition after the studio’s Project Popcorn, and in a means to monetize downstream revenues, Warner Bros is taking what was a HBO Max movie, Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and putting into 1,500 theatrical locations this weekend. That’s with a thrifty marketing spend. It’s the second movie after New Line’s House Party (8.8M) whereby Warners has reversed engineered a streaming release for the big screen. Meanwhile, Paramount, is building off the heat of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, with a 25th anniversary 3D re-issue of the filmmaker’s Oscar winning 1997 title, Titanic. There’s two arguments to be made that either could notch No. 1: Titanic apparently tracking better than the fall re-issue of Avatar (10.5M opening) with a shot at double digits in 2,400 theaters and the Channing Tatum-Salma Hayek Pinault threequel also having...

The daytime television landscape continues to see significant changes as Dr. Phil is the latest show set to come to an end. After 21 seasons, the talk show hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw will end its run of original episodes with the current 2022-2023 season, according to Deadline. The decision comes as McGraw’s contract with CBS Media Ventures, which he signed in 2018, is coming to an end. Dr. Phil premiered in September 2002 and became an instant hit, only second in ratings behind Oprah at the time. After Oprah Winfrey left daytime in 2011, McGraw’s show became the most-watched daytime syndicated talk show, a title it held for almost a decade. “I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television,” McGraw said (via Deadline). “With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children.
