  • This is a real workers Vs The Management story, with everyone trying to get one over on someone, from Mr Mash up to Mr Rumbold.

It is loaded with laugh out loud moments, a hilarious conversation between Mrs Slocombe and Miss Brahms, and a serious funny one between Mr Humphries and Mr Lucas, the innuendos really did seem to start here.

It's totally bonkers, and off the wall, unlike the others in the series, I'd argue this was the formula for future episodes.

    Huge fun. 9/10
  • Warning: Spoilers
In this episode of the popular series, the basic story plot deals with a wealthy woman (Hillary Pritchard) who is in Grace Brothers and discovers that she has dropped a valuable jewel in the store. She offers a large reward. Mr. Rumbold (Nicholas Smith) tries (in his own way - with his own agenda) to organize the search for the missing item.

There is an attempt at cooperative searching but soon male v. female antagonisms, and class antagonisms (Captain Peacock - Frank Thornton - v. the others) splinter the attempt at cooperation. In fact, only one person (Mr. Grainger - Arthur Borough) seems willing to work with all the others. What follows is a typical "Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" every- person-for-him-or-herself attempt by the characters to find the jewel and give it to the woman first. This leads to several odd and humorous situations, such as Mr. Lucas (Trevor Bannister) trying to "surreptitiously" put his foot over the jewel, without Peacock (who is standing over it) noticing Lucas' foot between his own.

But soon missing jewels turn up with alarming frequency, and the question arises of not so much who will find the jewel but which one found the actual jewel in question. As in most episodes the arrival of Young Mr. Grace (Harold Bennett) helps settle the matter, but also prevents everyone from getting what they wanted.
  • It is the final episode of the first series. Everyone is on their uppers. It is a good job that it is payday then.

That does not make the shop floor staff of Grace Brothers any more cheerful. As they examine their wage packet, they see all the various deductions.

Taxes, national insurance, the rest home run by Grace Brothers.

Some of them feel skint as soon as they open their wage packet. The only exception is Mr Mash. He is flushed with cash from all the overtime he is doing.

Mr Mash rubs Captain Peacock's nose up the wrong way. He is always snooty towards the working class Mash.

However there could be a surprise bonus. A well to do customer loses a valuable diamond on the clothing department. She offers £100 in reward.

Now greed takes over, as they all try to claim the reward for themselves. Only the shop floor seems to be awash with loose diamonds.

There were some good one liners. Some skullduggery from Mr Rumbold and Captain Peacock. Apt final words from Mr Grainger.
