  • Warning: Spoilers
With Callan behind a desk and Meres returning from America.

There is another shake up in the final series and this time it concerns Cross and Callan as Hunter.

Cross is being monitored closely by Section psychiatrist Snell who thinks Cross is not ready to return to duty.

Cross is showing remorse, the girl he whacked in the previous episode got brain damage.

Meres is told to follow a Soviet agent in Britain called Burov (Morris Perry.) However Meres is soon spotted by Burov.

Cross has been sent to guard a dissident poet called Trofimchuk, likely to be targeted by Burov. A shot across the bows to any dissidents behind the Iron Curtain. If we can kill a dissident in Britain, then we can get any one of you.

Only Cross is killed on duty. Snell thinks it was suicide or maybe Cross allowed Burov to kill him.

In the ensuing chaos, Callan leaves the building. Hunter must never leave but Callan sees his place in the field. He knows that it might be the end of his time in charge.

This is a brilliant episode, with Woodward and Mower on top of their game. Cross was never going to be a match for Meres. Callan was never really comfortable to be the man in charge. Cross dying heard him badly.
