It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.
Knife of Ice (1972)
Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.
Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

For every holiday there is a horror movie it feels like. This year made that more clear, giving us another Christmas set slasher in It's a Wonderful Knife, and what's destined to become a yearly tradition for horror fans with Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. New Year's Day has had some entries too over the decades. There's the not-so-great New Year's Evil, and smaller fare such as Bloody New Year, Steel Trap, and Midnighters. The best New Year's centered horror film, though, is one more familiar. In 1978, Jamie Lee Curtis became a scream queen thanks to Halloween. In 1980, Curtis starred in a trio of horror classics. She collaborated again with John Carpenter for The Fog and led the way in Prom Night, another influential slasher, but the best of the bunch might just be Terror Train.

Exclusive: Benjamin Zephaniah’s memoir Life and Rhymes is being developed into a TV series by Baby Cow and Timewasters creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor.
The project forms part of a funded development slate from Steve Coogan’s indie, unveiled by CEO Sarah Monteith to Deadline earlier this week, which also features shows about Margaret Thatcher and forensic scientist Patricia Wiltshire.
The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah tells the story of the celebrated poet, artist, activist and Peaky Blinders actor who was born into poverty and produced radical poetry that led him to perform in every continent of the world, meeting the likes of Nelson Mandela and The Wailers along the way.
