  • I always like startup based movies or series. Upstarts starts quite well and narrates the lives of startup enthusiasts. It's not simple and straight. Upstarts depicts all that. How emotionally set business changes the lives of their founders. The characters are justifying their characters.
  • For its fresh and real take on friendship, this film reminds of 'Dil Chahta Hai' but in a startup backdrop. And that is the mainstay of Upstarts as well.

The story is about three friends strongly aiming to give a shot at startup - the sentiment presently prevalent in the country. Eventually the plot gets predictable with ethical corruption seeping in the mind of the lead protagonist due to which he gains position but loses pals. What keeps the film still going is how persuasively it captures the startup world. Where it falters however is that it is not as entertaining, wacky or gripping as TVF's 'Pitchers' was!

Director Udai Singh Pawar's strong point is his ability to handle drama between the friends so deftly and never letting it go to melodrama. There are moments when the film could have easily gone overtly dramatic but it refrains and captures each such confrontation as if it came from pages of real life.

Performances by the lead cast are laudable - Priyanshu particularly is too good as the central character ably supported by Chandrachoor Rai and Shadab Kamal, who remains level-headed throughout. Rajeev Siddhartha as the character with grey shades is nuanced.

The basic premise couldn't have been more relevant. But at the same time the plot gets pretty predictable. However like it's underlying message, the film has its heart in the right place - and that's what works in its favour!

Perfect casting and an engaging plot makes this a pleasant watch. The journey of a startup, co-founder arguments, investor dilemma and everything is portrayed as realistically as possible without cinematic elements. This is one of the finest films based on startups like "TVF Pitchers" that doesn't disappoints you. Must watch for its plot and engaging screenplay!!
  • Warning: Spoilers
A very stupid movie with no real research on the startup scene and manufactured conflicts between the guys, the whole scene where the CEO was supposed to deliver medicines at a place affected by floods seemed so stupid. Netflix should really invest in better content.
  • A modern drama about start-up companies. A reasonable insight into shady investments and the associated risks. No romance. Mostly new faces with hindi/english dialogues. Overall=average
  • Light good watch, especially for those on the verge of starting up, or going through a turning phase in their startup because of the gloomy year of 2020.

So here is my honest review :

    1. Everything about the movie is understated, CLOSER TO REAL LIFE. It follows the journeys of various protagonists - the three friends, two of their friends, the first investor. But mainly the CEO. A journey in which we are all out to make our mark in the world while going through life's questions, hopes, struggles, pressures, ego fights, challenges, fears, and opportunities. This story could very be the story of thousands of young men and women in the country at this point in time. Tests of time, of our own internal moral compass vis-a-vis our passions and desires.

    2. There is NO LOVE STORY, Which is refreshing. The movie also gives a glimpse of how things work with investors in an app based service/product.

    3. It is mildly MOTIVATING and you find yourself constantly wishing for the right decisions on the part of protagonists and so for me it simultaneously opened up a door of reflection into my own decisions. Somehow, if you let it, i The movie can give you a subconscious entry into looking at our own situations as observers as against being the ones actually in it.

    4. These are tough times we are living in and for a lot of reasons we have become more isolated than ever before in spite of being so very connected online. This movie has some SUBTLE MESSAGES useful in such times. Like it reminds us of how the process of bouncing back involves us having a good support system of positive energies, by friends we trust, and family to keep our mental strength intact.

Life goes on. Our decisions make ripples that intersect with ripples.of other's decisions. Eventually, everyone finds what they want or need. All that the characters exemplified was the ability to look into themsleves, make decisions, and DO.

At one point it is also a reminder to always keep some fallback option to reach out to for when you feel the lowest in life and cannot think straight.

    5. The movie felt DISJOINTED in some places. Flow was not smooth. The passage of time or the pace of the movie was not anywhere close to constant - fast and slow - so that was slightly uncomfortable. Hence the slightly lower rating.

    Overall, Good watch.

I hardly ever watch a title without reading reviews first but this was an exception... and now that I am reviewing the ratings, I am glad that I gave this movie a chance. It doesn't deserve the low ratings. I live in the bay area amidst startups that have become household names across the globe and this movie does an incredible job in highlighting the highs, couples with many low lows, of chasing that elusive dream and playing that game. The story weaved through those topics effortlessly without sacrificing on character development. I dont know why anyone is complaining about acting. Most of the key characters were very believable. After I saw the movie, I called many of my friends and recommended the movie to the them. I really hope Netflix invests further in such movies from the subcontinent.
  • Don't know how start ups usually works so I cannot comment on the technicalities but I enjoyed watching it. It's a simple not exceptional story based on values.
  • It's a great film with a brilliant performance by Priyanshu, a film that most youngsters with an entrepreneurial vision can relate to...... It's so great that Netflix is providing young talented actors n directors a platform

I can draw a comparison for certain part of this film with TVF Pitchers. Though it was a good attempt this film felt like a drag to me.

There were certain good moments like the board meeting but lot of un-anwered questions where dots could not be connected.
  • It started off well but later it was hardly anything related to business & entreprenership , boring i would say !

I really enjoyed this movie. The whole prospect of entrepreneurship and how it affects friendship really amazes me. This is a must-see for any Indian and any businessman!!

    10/10

Highly recommended. Performances are good direction as well. The main actor has performed well. Very nice concept they could have make it better also anyway still nice movie to enjoy and have fun
  • It's a typical indian take on a startup cinema. It's a good watch but you aren't going to learn anything regarding entrepreneurship or anything like that. It revolves around three friends and there journey in this world. Watch it with a light mind. Don't be too enthusiastic.
  • I feel the plot was very highly inspired from pitchers
  • Wonderful story and story of hope. A great movie to watch. Sadly ,this movie is under rated. Today's soul less corporate culture is exposed.
  • Inside view of startup and investor relation. View into challenges in tech market and how values matter even today.
  • Priyanshu's efforts towards acting and Netflix size production value, were the only two good things which made me and my friends to last for first 20 minutes.I assume everyone from production, direction and acting were in a half hearted affair..The screenplay writers should seriously consider...(leave it, i shouldn't say further)..

But seriously..the writers and the director needs to improve a lot.You guys are wasting the opportunity as given by the big P-house like Netflix. It will be no wonder, if in future, they hire more established people or someone from foreign will be hired to make our cinema..

I am highly disappointed with the content writing these days. I believe our film & television industry needs more good writers than actors.(you even missed on hiring decent actors except one)

P.S. i am sorry!,if anyone associated with this drama is reading this and is offended..i was just honest..Best Wishes ahead!
  • Appreciate the ways the movie try's to reveal about the work culture, bottlenecks, values, integrity, and other factors that play important role in the startup ecosystem.

Personal Preference: Hope Netflix had produced a Kannada version too
  • The exact similar type of characters with same outlooks. A nerd, a drunk guy and a hopeless CEO. Amazingly copied Silicon Valley TV series.

Best film for motivation and self realization. All actors are so very perfect.

    Great
Its was a fantastic movie if you wanna a start a start-up its gives u motivation . It contains lodts of drama with friends comdey, great experience.
  • This film is an entry on Netflix of Indian new wave cinema. Unfortunately, the quality of the production and acting is so poor that it really does not make the grade. The focus is one enduring friendship, the seduction by dot come startups, and doing good over evil and making money. The dialog is childish and silly. The film is an opportunity that has been squandered.
  • The acting, emotions and the story was amazing in the movie. It definitely reminded me of my startup years and especially the issues faced in this world. Though acting was 7/10 but the story and the messaging of this movie is so perfect. It leaves an amazing taste.
  • This movie had so much potential; I've never even heard of any of the actors but they all played their characters very well and responsibly. However, the writing and direction were so off. There way too many blackouts and jumps from scenes that did not flow evenly, I had to ask after every scene if I had missed something if I looked away for even a second. There were moments when the characters acted way differently than expected, and I blame this on direction because otherwise they seemed to be in character. Especially the end, what was that? It's like they were trying to fit it into the movie last minute. Editting was off. Like my title insinuates, it was a very interesting plot and had so much potential, but the execution was a huge disaster. And I know the director and writer are the same... Someone needs to tell him to find another job lol.
