In 1992, Sinead O’Connor appeared on SNL and sang an a cappella version of Bob Marley’s “War” as her closing performance. As she sang, she showed the camera a photo of Pope John Paul II before tearing it up, telling the audience to “fight the real enemy.” The backlash was swift and vicious. People smashed her CDs in the street, NBC banned her for life, and half the audience at a Bob Dylan concert booed her when she took the stage. Before all of this, though, two men threw eggs at her when she left 30 Rock. O’Connor didn’t hesitate to run after them.
Two people egged Sinead O’Connor after her ‘SNL’ performance
After ripping up the photo of Pope John Paul II and blowing out a candle, O’Connor ended her rendition of “War” to complete silence.
“Total stunned silence in the audience,” she wrote in her book Rememberings.

Just as film and TV have the Oscars and the Emmys, The Podcast Academy is positioning the Ambies to become the event of the year for the podcast industry as well as the newest fixture of Hollywood awards season, complete with shiny statuettes and a swanky ceremony that, for at least one evening, compels podcasters to dress for the camera.
Hosted by Larry Wilmore, the annual event’s third edition is taking place March 7 at the Westgate Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The company to beat will be Audible, which received a total of 19 nominations across the 26 Ambies categories, including several nods for podcast of the year (see below).
The Podcast Academy received a record 1,700 submissions this year, which were narrowed down by a blue-ribbon panel of judges — who apply every year to be part of the panel — to determine the nominees in each category. From there, voting opened up...

Universal’s Madonna biopic – starring Julia Garner and directed by the singer herself – is not moving forward, a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed to TheWrap.
The news comes a week after the “Material Girl” singer announced a career-spanning, globe-trotting tour, raising speculation about the untitled film’s future. It has languished in development since 2020, when Madonna was set to direct and co-write with “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody. They completed the script in April 2021 despite rumors that Cody had exited the project, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Garner won the leading role in June 2022. The “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” star was reportedly up against stars like Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Alexa Demie, Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha during the months-long audition process.

Mexican director Joaquin del Paso’s coming-of-age drama “The Hole in the Fence,” set in an all-male religious camp in rural Mexico, scored the Cairo Film Festival’s top prize, the Golden Pyramid, on Sunday capping a vibrant 43rd edition of the preeminent Arab event, which was held in person despite the impending threat of the coronavirus Omicron variant.
Though there were some last minute cancellations, most international attendees made the trek to Cairo undeterred, including jury president Emir Kusturica, U.S. producer Lawrence Bender and Cannes topper Thierry Fremaux – dubbed the “King of the Croisette” by the master of ceremonies. The latter two were honored with lifetime achievement awards during the glitzy closing ceremony in Cairo’s opera house.
“Hole in the Fence,” which world premiered in Venice, is Del Paso’s second work after “Panamerican Machinery,” which had made a splash after launching from Berlin in 2016. “Hole” explores...
