Indian actor Vipin Sharma is earning global acclaim for playing a trans character in Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut “Monkey Man.”
Sharma plays Alpha, the leader of a trans community known in India as hijras, who is instrumental in providing a new lease on life to Patel’s character when he’s down and out in “Monkey Man.”
Aamir Khan’s “Taare Zameen Par” (2007) was Sharma’s breakthrough role, and since then he has won plaudits for “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Shahid” (all 2012), “Raanjhanaa” (2013), “Raman Raghav 2.0” (2016), “Paatal Lok” (2020) and “Dear Jassi” (2023).
When director Anthony Maras offered Sharma a role in “Hotel Mumbai” (2018), starring Patel, the actor accepted. “He said, ‘It’s not a very big part, but it’s a very interesting part.’ I immediately took it because it was going to make me meet Dev who I really wanted to meet,” Sharma tells Variety.

“If I make a movie, it will be a grand one. The subject will be big but not the actor,” he said referring to the trend in recent movies.

Brijendra Kala, the seasoned actor known for his character work in Hindi films, has also left a mark in web series and teleplays. Starting with a small role, he progressed to writing dialogues for TV shows and made his official film debut in ‘Haasil’. However, it was his notable roles in films like “Jab We Met,” “Mithya,” “Agneepath,” “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Pk,” and “83” that earned him recognition in popular cinema.
One of his recent screen appearances was in Zee Theatre’s teleplay ‘Boichek’, inspired by the work of German writer Karl Georg Büchner’s ‘Woyzeck’. Tribute My first memory of Irrfan Khan was 14 years ago, in a TV series called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not), and I’ve been captivated ever since.Geetika MantriIrrfan/FacebookI remember the first time I watched Irrfan Khan on screen, 14 years ago. Not unusually, 12-year-old me was surfing the channels on the TV till something grabbed my attention on Star One. It was his voice that caught me – he was setting the stage for an episode of a show called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not). The show itself was about mystical, inexplicable and spooky things that have happened in India – which was right up my alley – but it was Irrfan’s calm anchoring that pulled me in. From that day on, I would try to catch the reruns of the show every afternoon – I wasn’t allowed to watch TV too late at night,...

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one example of a man who went from rags to riches, literally! From being a small-time watchman to playing a role equivalent to the lead, the actor has surely shot to fame with hardwork.
Nawazuddin started his career with Shool (1999), where he played the role of a waiter. Surprisingly, the movie also starred Manoj Bajpayee (who was the main lead in Gangs Of Wasseypur, where Nawazuddin gained the much-deserved recognition). However, he started getting noticed from Anurag Kashyap's movie Black Friday.
Nawaz then played a terrorist in Kabir Khan's New York, and now the actor plays a sidekick in his upcoming movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan along side.
He also did minor roles in 2010 content-driven movies Peepli Live and Paan Singh Tomar, but got hugely noticed in them. He also played a major role in another Irrfan Khan starrer Lunchbox (in 2013) and Vidya Balan...

The writer of such marvelous films as Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, I Am Kalam and Paan Singh Tomar is back with another unusual title, Babloo Happy Hai. This time he is once again working with his I Am Kalam team. When we caught up with the erudite and extremely humble and simple writer, and asked him to decipher the title as well as the film, he told us, Actually I had scripted Babloo Happy Hai a while back but as the subject is as relevant today as it was then, Madhab and me...

2013 has had some fantastic films from the passionate Ram-Leela to the dramatic Kai Po Che. There have of course been some majorly disappointing films. These either had fantastic trailers which showed promised of exciting cinema, or boasted star casts that would surely choose only the best of scripts. Take a look at the over-hyped films that brought nothing but heart-breaking sadness to the filmi buffs globally.
10. Bullet Raja
We were expecting a little bit of action, a little bit of comedy and little bit of romance. Tigmanshu Dhulia, director of the fantastic Paan Singh Tomar, sadly lets us down with this directorial venture. The dialogues are disappointing, the music is forgettable and draws the film out unnecessarily and the story is quite unbelievable. Sorry Saif, better luck next time.
9. Race 2
Race 1 was a stylish movie with fast-paced action and beautiful international locations. Race 2 maintains the style, some nice locations,...

Irrfan Khan, who confessed to this writer, that he is jobless after The Lunchbox and in pursuit of a further excellence in his roles has finally found another character to challenge himself as an actor. In Tigmanshu Dhulia's The Killing Of A Porn Filmmaker, Irrfan will star as a porn director, a real lowdown sleaze ball who indulges in the lowliest of porn filmmaking. Reveals Tigmanshu, "We are talking about a guy who plants secret cameras in toilets, shoots honeymooning couples with hidden cameras...Irrfan plays the supreme of sleaze." But there is a redemptive graph to the character. Says Tigmanshu, "Irrfan's character redeems himself. He rises from the depths of sleaze and emerges a hero...why and how, I can't reveal. But after our collaboration in Paan Singh Tomar, this would be a completely new world." The film in English and Hindi would star a major international actor alongside Irrfan.

As a south filmgoer and Bollywood naach-gaana fanatic, masala fest movies are not new to me. Yet even when a film has all the trimmings of a throwback action film, there are guarantees it will work. Sajid Khan’s Himmatwala is testimony to that. Tigmanshu Dhulia is stepping into the commercial arena with Bullet Raja starring Saif Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergill and Sonakshi Sinha. The intention is to make a masala topped entertainer. The result is a film that throws at you every known cliche possible while bringing back some of the Dhulia style.
Raja (Saif Ali Khan) aka Bullet Raja and his best bud Rudra (Jimmy Shergill) lead this rise of a commoner to become a dreaded gangster with the love angle covered by Mitali played by Sonakshi Sinha. But for every rise, there is a fall and that’s where Sharp Shooter-come-local law enforcement Inspector (Vidyut Jamwal) comes in.

Saif Ali Khan returns to the big screen this Thanksgiving Thursday, November 28, in the Us and then the 29th the world over, in the much-talked-about new film Bullett Raja. Directed by last year’s National Award winner Tigmanshu Dhulia (Paan Singh Tomar), the film co-stars Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill, Gulshan Grover, Chunky Pandey and mixes action, comedy, and romance into a full-on entertainer with some of the hottest music of the year.
Talkind about the film and especially his character, Saif said, “It’s a thriller about somebody who is quite an intelligent guy. He’s from a well-to-do Brahmin family so it’s very surprising that he ends up in this line of mafia work. But there is no other option for him.”
Adding, “It’s the rise of a gangster but his personality is larger than life and Tigmanshu has made it a point to make it lovable and entertaining.
