  • Yeah, it's a Japanese show pretending to be American. Having crudely drawn characters to be in the same area like South Park. But like South Park, it's one of those shows that's so offensive, you can't help but enjoy it.

The makers of the show, their goal was to make it as gross and offensive as possible. I think they've succeeded.

The amount of gross out gags in this show, involving poo, vomit, boogies, urine and other foul stuff would put anybody off. Episode 1 features a poo monster. I wonder did they get the idea from Dogma or Conker's Bad Fur Day?

But those who have strong stomachs, you're welcome.

For me the most disgusting episode is "Raiders of the Nasal Arc" which involves nose picking. Just be thankful, it's not in live action. There scene where everybody is picking their noses out of control, it looks like small meteorites coming out of their noses.

The soundtrack is really amazing and the action scenes are fun to watch.

My fave eps are "Les Diabolique", "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City", "The Diet Syndrome", "The Stripping" and "Help! We Are Angels"

My least fave episodes are "Vomiting Point" because it's so boring and "Chuck to the Future" where nothing happens at all.

I'm only giving this an 8 because there are some things I don't like about it. It moves a tad too fast and you have to rewind to see what just happened. A lot of things happen all at once in this show. Some parts are just strange and happen out of no where, like in The Young Ones. In episode 13, Panty is at a farm, for some strange reason. It's never fully explained why she is there. Some episodes just end on a cliff hanger and is never explain how the characters survived to be in the next episode.

I watched the English dub because I heard it was offensive. The writers I think did a great job on making it offensive.

It only lasted one season, a second one was planned but the creator left due to creative differences. I don't think there will be a second season. But it's better to end it now than to have another season that's terrible. The Simpsons should've ended years ago. Less is more.

I loved it. If you like rude, gross cartoons, you'll probably love it too.
  • My first impression was.. I kind of felt it was lower in quality from what I thought it was(in terms of substance itself, the show was well done through and through) but thats because I went in completely blind. I thought their was an actual premise(like most anime), well I suppose their is but for the most part this is just a bunch of mini adventures very episodic. My second thought was, "this reminds me of an American cartoon style rather than an anime". The style is very similar to something you'd find in America, & the episodes are basically two 15minute stories in 1 episode(like most children cartoons). Right from go this show gets down and dirty with profound language & dirty jokes, like extremely dirty this is by far the most profound language show I've ever seen(worse than "Family Guy" & "South Park"). They're literally just cursing to curse. This kinda turned me off to it at first because I wasn't expecting to watch some slapstick profound joke skit show but after an episode or two I stopped taking it serious and just accepted it as "something to watch & not really care about", after that I began to enjoy it more. Some episodes were definitely more funny to me than others, towards the end it finally started following more of an actual story, this definitely boosted my enjoyment & made me start getting into it more. The animation style is crazy, as I said it will remind you of something you'd expect to see on American TV but its so diverse in its style. Every scene is different, you never know what its going to look like until your staring at it, this was really cool. The music is amazing, especially the OP & ED. Some of the most catchy songs I've ever heard. The English dub was extremely well done, all the characters matched perfect. The story is extremely simple, the two main characters are angels, they get kicked out of heaven(for obvious reasons you'll understand in the first 10seconds of the series lol), they need to kill evil monsters to collected "heaven coins" to buy their way back into heaven. If you want something just stupid & comical and are okay with dick jokes & literally everything in between then check this out, if your more like me and are looking for something with a deeper level of story look else where.

4ish/5? Why? Well I gave it such a high rating because its really well done, its just not something i'd necessarily hunt down to watch. The animation style is like nothing else, its awesome and diverse. The music is pretty epic, especially the op & ed. The dub is great, everyone matches perfectly. The story is pretty weak and simple but at the same time it needs to be exactly that simple in order for this show to work, so you can't really complain. Its profound, dirty & moderately funny. Don't take it serious and you'll enjoy it more. If your looking for something to throw on when you have a few minutes here and their then this is your show, if your looking for something to grab your attention & immerse you into that world making you binge watch the hole thing in 1 sitting this probably isn't it.(for me at least)
  • Ratings for all 13 episodes,

    Ep 1 ~ 6/10; Ep 2 ~ 7/10; Ep 3 ~ 7/10; Ep 4 ~ 7/10; Ep 5 ~ 5/10; Ep 6 ~ 7/10; Ep 7 ~ 7/10; Ep 8 ~ 7/10; Ep 9 ~ 7/10; Ep10 ~ 4/10; Ep11 ~ 8/10; Ep12 ~ 7/10; Ep13 ~ 7/10

Love the voice cast (outstanding English dub). The idea of foul-mouthed angel sisters Panty (a sex maniac) and Stocking (a sugar addict) getting kicked out of Heaven for 'bad behaviour' (never specified) is a funny one. Their attempting to earn their way back in is pretty much all there is in terms of connecting plot; apart from that the episodes are pretty self-contained. There's a lot of innuendo and fan-service (without it there wouldn't be much of a show!), as well as extremely strong language, but it's done in a very funny way. And some of the dialogue between Panty, Stocking, and their Earthly 'handler', Garterbelt, is laugh-out-loud. The big problem with the show is lack of consistency.

Some episodes are pretty good, one is very good; and a few are downright poor. Almost all episodes consist of two separate stories, one usually stronger than the other (episode ratings above are averaged out over the two stories; sadly, ratings of strong segments get dragged down by weaker ones). There's far too much reliance on 'toilet humour'. And the art/animation is sometimes wanting; Panty and Stocking, their demonic opposites Scanty and Kneesocks, and Garterbelt, are fine, but several supporting characters are jarringly drawn/animated in a style reminiscent of 'Ren & Stimpy' or 'Courage the Cowardly Dog', which I can't stand.

The ending of the final episode infuriated some fans at the time, whilst others loved it. The promised (or trolled?!) second season never arrived. A return was teased a few years back but nothing came of it. If it did come back, I'd watch it. When this series hits it is very funny. Overall rating, 6.5/10.
  • In many ways, this show gets a completely unfair rap from people that had been expecting something entirely different. When one conjures up images of anime comedy, one tends to think of a moe-blob and her misadventures in high school - something the creators of Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt have obviously had just about enough of.

In that respect, they're not alone. This is a show that is truly in sync with true veteran anime fans for its self-referential comedy, its blunt and honest lambasting of ludicrous anime norms and expectations, and its innovative art style.

Do yourself a favor - if you're into anime, have been growing a little bit bored with the endlessly repeated formulae that have been plaguing the genre and you don't mind being occasionally shocked or disgusted, this brilliantly animated and laugh-out-loud show will quickly become one of your favorites.

Easily the sleeper hit of 2010.
  • This is one of my first modern Anime I ever watched; it looks like a stylized version of 2 Broke Girls but with a lot of fantasy elements UwU.
  • This show is ripe with innuendos and suggestive material inappropriate for children, but the animation is pretty entertaining and the variation between the how episodes choose to be raunchy and lewd is enough to make this a show worth watching with some friends - if you're not laughing with the show, you're laughing at the show. If their show turns into a formula for presenting their sex jokes I can see it growing stale, but for the time being the show manages to do something different with every 15 minute short... except the sex and swearing is consistent, that's the heart of the animation.

Don't watch this if you're watching for a story though...
  • I speak both English and Japanese but the English dub of Panty and Stocking is one of the best dubs that Funimation has made. Jamie Marchi's crass screenplay not only provides raunchy material but made the anime more true to what Gainax wanted. Jamie Marchi, Monica Rial, Christopher Sabat, Christopher Ayres, Joel McDonald, Ian Sinclair, Cherami Leigh and Colleen Clinkenbeard have provided their best voice work in that anime. It's basically if Deadpool had an anime made after him.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is a unique, crude, show that aims to be obscene. The show does this by making perverted jokes every now and then, at first it's pretty funny, but they do this over and over again until it just got repetitive. They do this while making pop culture references and clichés, making really weird episodes. and there's not much story either. Well, there's some loose continuation, and later in the series they start introducing an actual villain, but again they just had to put in sex jokes and the like so it's hard to take the show seriously when it's actually trying to be serious for once.

The characters, just like the show, are unique. Panty is the whore and Stocking is a Goth chick who likes sweets, they're both angels and they aren't really into fighting bad guys because they feel like it, they're actually being punished for their unacceptable behavior. because of the situation Panty and Stocking are in, you'd expect awesome fight scenes, well, sometimes the fights deliver, sometimes they don't. Other than that the animation is superb, it gives off a power puff girls vibe, sometimes they even change it up a bit, and the soundtrack is pretty good. Believe it or not, the show actually has a moral, it's something like to be chaotic and wild is to be free.

The entire season 1 is only 13 episodes, and the jokes got tedious just when they introduced the main villain which is somewhere from 7-9. If you want something different, go ahead and watch this one, just don't expect to latch on to it.
  • This anime is a challenge to the senses, containing both disgusting and sublime imagery, and a synth-heavy pop dance soundtrack that will get you grooving despite yourself.

The sensual transformation sequences and suggestive subject matter make it ideally suited for the 13-year old hormonal boy in all of us, and its nearly blasphemous depiction of angels and religious figures makes us feel a bit guilty for taking such pleasure in its racy, uninhibited nature.

But to look at the surface would be to miss the core of what the show is really about. Instead of a solely sexual mind-trip, this anime takes traditional Japanese values and turns them on their head.

The clues to this revelation are in the lyrics of the music the angels sing, and in the rivals they face.

Anarchy seems to be the trait that the heavenly duo seem to endear, with an unabashed indulgence of their sexual and physical desires. Meanwhile, their demonic counterparts are all about rigid order. (Their costumes are often based upon the uniforms of the 3rd Reich).

Traditional Japanese society tells people "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down" while this anime says, "be yourself, and screw the consequences" - it is making an appeal to the youth of Japan to grasp for freedom despite the consequences, reminding me of the kind of things that led to the cultural revolutions of the 60s in the US.

Look deeper and you will see even more.

And even if you don't want to be bothered with deep messages and subplots, you can unplug your brain and enjoy the random sexy adventures of two crazy angels having a good time.

Its like the worst two episodes of rick and morty on repeat. Like I get it you're saying crazy stuff and being awful but it gets really tiring and numbing after like 2 episodes. The most fun parts of the show for me were when they slow down and let characters interact instead of developing niche fetishes.

I guess it is by design though to have made something incredibly raunchy and offensive and it absolutely is. It pushes a lot of boundaries.

It does what it set out to do and I can't fault it for that, however, that has not aged that well. It would be a lot more enjoyable if the focus was put more on character development rather than shock value.

    Good dub tho.
  • A friend told me about Panty and Stocking, so I decided to watch it with an open mind. I had heard that it was inspired by the TV show Drawn Together, which I loved. Because of this, I thought I would enjoy Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, but boy, was I wrong.

Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is a travesty of an anime, and that is putting it mildly. It relies far too much on sex jokes, the swearing gets old very, VERY fast, the toilet humour is lame, and every single character is immensely unlikable. Now I've seen many unlikable characters, from film, to cartoons, to TV series, and Panty has to be the most unlikable character I've ever come across.

It seemed like this anime was trying to out-swear South Park, have more sex jokes than B-Gata H Kei and Seitokai Yakuindomo (which, if I might add, are both a fantastic and sorely underrated anime series) combined, and have more toilet humor than Family Guy. You would think that this would all mesh together well. Sorry people, it doesn't. It falls flat on its face and every episode is worse than the previous one. The episode basically consists of 5 minutes of fighting enemies, then about 15 minutes of two sisters having a go at each other. With lots and lots of swearing, obviously.

I have met various people who have watched Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, and there were definitely more haters than lovers. Unless you are either a pre-teen who finds toilet humour, sex jokes and swearing to be the best form of humour, or if you are a full-grown adult who has the most low-brow sense of humour, avoid this one like the plague.

A final note- Panty and Stocking fanfiction is TERRIBLE.
  • As my summary suggests, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (PSG from now on) is easily one of the most profanity- and sexual reference-laden shows I've ever seen. It is also easily one of the funniest (albeit crudely funny) shows I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

PSG follows the story of Panty and Stocking, two foul-mouthed and short-tempered angels who were banished from heaven because of their behavior. They now reside on Earth, where they have to acquire enough Heaven Coins to buy their way back into heaven, which they obtain by killing ghosts that appear in the city they live in. Garterbelt is an almost equally foul-mouthed reverend who acts as the angels' guardian as well as messenger from whom Panty and Stocking receive their assignments.

Sounds simple enough, but these two girls have pretty extreme fascinations that constantly distract them from their true goal. Panty makes it her personal goal to have sex with one thousand Earth men before returning to heaven, and Stocking eats anything containing sugar she can get her hands on. And when they are on task, they can transform their undergarments (for which each angel is named) into a weapon (Panty's panties turn into guns, Stocking's stockings turn into katanas). Yup.

Believe you me, this show is as outlandish as it sounds and then some, and is equally as funny. Yes, most of the humor is crude, but it's also taken to an extant that, in my opinion, would nearly warrant an NC-17 rating for the entire series if it had included any actual nudity. As such, keep this as far away from children as possible but by all means enjoy at your leisure. Don't let the animation style fool you; this is anime, but GAINAX meant for it to resemble American cartoons. While it may look simple as first glance, the action segments in the series have some pretty awesome (and insane) animation, hardly a surprise considering this was animated by the same people that made Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Anyone looking for adult animation need look no further than PSG. Every episode packs a wallop in the form of an outrageous plot as well as extremely raunchy humor including, but not limited to, pervasive sexual references and language. On that topic, I would have to recommend watching this in the English-dubbed version. Frankly, I found it a lot funnier in English, especially in how the lines are delivered and how the script writers really cut loose and managed to make it raunchier than the original Japanese version.

AND it has an homage to Invader ZIM. What more could you ask for?! Watch it already!

Review based on: Full viewing of Japanese and English dubbed series (13/13)
  • I found the anime just full of pointless dumb jokes that weren't even that funny at all and had two annoying main characters with such stupid names! I'm just gonna leave it there.....
  • Gainax did an AMAZING job with this anime. The animation had a quite limited budget and it really makes every bit of it count with unique artstyle - it's incredibly well stylized and the animation quality downgrades at more mondane scenes and puts all the extra efford and budget into some of the chase/fight scenes, which look incredible at times. Our heroes aren't quite your typical heroes and seem really unlikeable but when you pass more time with them you really grow to love them, not because of character depth but beacuse of how cool they are plain and simple. This show is something that only comes out once or twice a decade. It achieves in 13 episodes what most longer-running shows can't do in hundreds. Simply put, there are very few times I've been invested and interested in a fantasy world setting more than in this one. It doesn't take itself seriously almost at all, but just enough for you to get attached to it, but not so much that it becomes your typical anime hero's jurney story. The story line alternated between episodic with few things slowly connecting together as a loose overall plot and there is definitely some feel of progression, which I think is the absolute perfect combination. Even in the most random, disconnected from reality and traditional continuity episodes, due to the coins the sisters collect after slaying ghosts slowly adding up to the total needed to get back to Heaven, the story progress can be felt at least on a subtle level. I really, really like the setting in Daten city - a city stuck between Heaven and Earth, where the angels that have been consumed by two of the seven deadly sins must defeat ghosts and demons coming from the underworld and save the citizens to prove their worth and go back to their home in Paradise. Each episode does something really unique, often changing artstyles and even genres to fit a certain mood or give you the desired experience. Don't underestimate the plot of this anime just because it's overall pretty nonsensical at first glance - everything actually makes sense, and characters that seem only as filler and support charaters like Brief and Garterbelt become extremely important further on in the story in ways that will surprize you. There is a certain cliffhanger that devestated me when I watched this anime for the first time 4 years ago. I won't spoil what happens at the end but it's both in a sense one of the best and the worst endings I have ever seen in a piece of media - best because it makes me desire to see the next installment more that any other ending has - worst because the installment never came to be. Gainax have become infamous for their inconclusive ending but this may be the worst offender of it. I know that the studio is broke at the moment since most of the staff have moved on to Trigger, another fantastic anime studio, and I know it's been 10 years but this NEEDS to come back at some point in the future. I will wait as long as I have to but it needs to happen eventually. The ending theme is quite somber and contrasting with the rest of the show and watching it after you've finished the show it's quite depressing.

The show is absolutely amazing and strangely perfect for something that went out of its way to be stupid on purpose. While I love it to bits, to say that it's not for everyone is a gigantic understatement, which makes the fact that this show's average rating is not all that impressive actually make sense. Give this a try if you are not someone easily offended and if you turn out to be the very specific type of person that will enjoy this show to the fullest, like myself, this may be one of the best pieces of animation you will ever see. If not, it will most likely still be a lot of mindless fun either way. Oh and I would suggest the dub, while for most anime I prefer subs and the original voice acting is top-notch, the dub is on a whole another level and possibly my favourite dub of forain media in history.

This is an absolute 10/10 for me. The story, characters, soundtrack and setting are just far too perfect for it to be anything less than a ten. Thank you Gainax, please make season 2 or continue the story with an official manga continuation!
  • This show has a funny/adorable art style! The comedy is fantastic! And the chipmunks are greatly written!!!! I loved this show as a teen!! ^^
  • Love the 2d/3d effect on the show but the show itself has dozens of adult jokes that not many people like it so it gets a 7 for me its a 9

    5/10
    Why?
I watched episode one with English sub and Japanese dub, then stoped because this sucks.

Humor - I was told that this was going to be like South Park, a show made by a pair of geniuses. This is so painfully unfunny that I feel like everyone who tried to compare it to South Park owes Matt and Trey an apology. There is nothing comedic about a ridiculous amount of sh** being shown onscreen (literally). You need jokes, characters, and a plot. This has none of that.

Animation - The overall look is unique and stylized. I actually kinda like it.

There's really nothing else to talk about as I just watched episode one. I really wouldn't recommend this show. It painfully unfunny, and I've heard that the "jokes" are what drive it so I'm not watching any more as there's clearly no plot.
  • The jokes do get old though. I really hope people wont judge based on first the episode the show has a pretty good story. You just have to give it a chance and admire how much work had to have been put in for this to work.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This series from Studio Gainax does not look like your average anime in fact if it weren't for the fact that it is in Japanese viewers could be excused for thinking it was a western series. The series follows the escapades of two angels, named Panty and Stocking, who have been sent from heaven to eliminate ghosts in Daten City. These girls aren't your stereotypical angels however; Panty is a sex maniac and Stocking is addicted to sweet food. The first few episodes see them defeating various ghosts but half way through the series their Nemesis, two demons named Scanty and Kneesocks arrive, ironically these two may be demons but they are sticklers to obeying the rules. These two are great additions to the cast and help to improve an already great series.

Each episode consists of two stories and while there were a few duds most stories were hilarious although those offended by frequent swearing, often in uncensored English; references to many bodily functions and promiscuous behaviour would be strongly advised to give this series a miss if you aren't bothered then check it out and expect plenty of laughs. While there are lots of sex references there is nothing that could be considered fan service due to the animation style; this does switch to a more traditional anime style for their sexy pole dancing transformation scenes but even these are very tame compared to many series.

As the last episode ended with a cliff hanger and the words 'too be continued next season' it looks as if there may be more to come next year; I certainly hope so as thirteen episodes wasn't enough.

At the time of writing this series can be watched in Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll but I have read that it will be removed soon; hopefully this is an indication that somebody hopes to release in on DVD; If it gets an R2 PAL release I'd certainly consider buying it.

Honestly it was a really interesting anime that kept me entertained the whole time except the chuck to the future episode. It's not a long anime so I definitely recommend watching it if you get bored and want something on the shorter end to watch. Each episode is around 23 minutes long but to me they felt shorter because of how entertaining I found it. Definitely wouldn't recommend watching it if you're under 16 though since it's very yk. Some episodes are on the weirded side and that plus the sexual stuff makes it an anime I would definitely watch ALONE! If you like south park u should watch.
