On Sunday, the Motion Picture Sound Editors announced the winners of the Mpse Golden Reel Awards, and four of the five Oscar nominees for Best Sound came away victorious: Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, A Complete Unknown, had two Golden Reel nominations, but didn't win.
Dune claimed top honors for effects/foley. Wicked was awarded for music editing. The Wild Robot had the best sound editing for animation. And Emilia Pérez won the award for international features. Surprisingly, the dialogue/Adr prize went to Saturday Night, which ranked fifth in Gold Derby's odds, with only one user predicting that result.

Universal Pictures has entered a first-look film partnership with Barnstorm, the production company founded by Glen Powell, the studio announced on Tuesday.
Former 21 Laps veteran Dan Cohen is set to join Barnstorm as a partner.
Powell and the studio are expanding their relationship following the success of “Twisters.” The film, where Powell starred as Tyler Owens, exceeded box office expectations and set a new record for natural disaster movie openings in the U.S. When “Twisters” was released on Peacock in November 2024, it became their most-watched new movie in its first two weeks.
“Barnstorm has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. I want our company to be a destination for world class theatrical entertainment. Universal Pictures is entering a first-look film production pact with its Twisters star Glen Powell and his Barnstorm production company. At the same time, 21 Laps veteran Dan Cohen is set to join Barnstorm as the label’s partner.
The news comes in the wake of Powell being nominated for his first Golden Globe, for Best Actor in a Comedy and Musical for Netflix’s Hit Man, which he produced and co-wrote.

Sugarcane, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, and Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story are the leading nomination vote getters for the Critics Choice Association’s Ninth Annual Documentary Awards with winners to be named in a ceremony at the Edison Ballroom in NYC on November 10, 2024. Full Disclosure: I am a Cca member and served on the Documentary selection committee again this year.
Sugarcane, a powerful film about an investigation into abuse and missing children at an Indian residential school and its effect on the nearby Sugarcane Reservation, received a leading 8 nominations, while Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story received 6 nominations for its remarkable and moving tale of a unique friendship between a man and an otter in remote Shetland Islands.

Glen Powell teams up with Audible for The Best Man's Ghostwriter, created by comedian Matthew Starr. The 10-episode Audible Original drama is based on Starr's real-life experience as a wedding speech ghostwriter, and it offers a splash of romance, comedy, and especially bromance. Powell serves as producer as well as the main character, fresh off success in movies all across the spectrum.
The Best Man's Ghostwriter is closer in spirit to the tone of Anyone But You rather than Twisters, but the actor pulls from all manner of genres and resources when portraying the character of Nate. The protagonist, who is in a loving relationship with his fiancee (played by Emily In Paris star Ashley Park), has a thriving business as a freelance speechwriter for hapless best men at weddings. MTV Documentary Films executives are likely dancing the salsa — and perhaps dipping chips in it — over the early returns from their new documentary “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!”
“¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” opened last night with just one showing on a single screen at a single Alamo Drafthouse location in Denver, but combined with pre-sales, the film already has a per-theater-average (PTA) of $19,296, IndieWire can reveal exclusively. The pre-sales figure alone, which by Thursday reached $15,600, was itself enough to have the best PTA of 2024 for a documentary, surpassing “War Game” and “Eno”.
If the numbers persist throughout the weekend, “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” could have the largest PTA for any documentary since Covid. Since 2020, the only film that comes close to the numbers “Casa Bonita” projects to hit is 2023’s “Anselm,” which had a PTA of $21,000 across two theaters.
“¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” follows “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone...

Ortega and Powell, Hollywood's rising stars, are set to collaborate in J.J. Abrams' upcoming movie, marking a significant shift into sci-fi for both. Powell, known for action/comedy roles, and Ortega, a modern horror icon, may bring new energy to Abrams' sci-fi genre with their star power. While details on Abrams' secret movie remain scarce, the absence of time travel hints at a possible action-packed sci-fi blockbuster in the works.
The newly announced untitled J.J. Abrams movie looks much more appealing after casting two of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood. Abrams' latest movie is set to star both Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega. While Powell, 35, has certainly been around the block, he skyrocketed to superstardom with his recent works Anyone But You, Hit Man, and now Twisters, which has made him one of the most in-demand actors currently working in Hollywood. While some people were already starting to discover who Emmy nominee Jenna Ortega is and what her talents are, she officially made a name for herself after taking on the starring role of Wednesday Addams in the popular Netflix horror-comedy series Wednesday. Now, there's word that she could be potentially starring in an upcoming secret movie from J.J. Abrams. More on this below.
The movie is untitled at the moment, but Abrams is said to be making it for Warner Bros. He penned the script and will produce it through his Bad Robot film and television production company. He will also direct. We first learned of this film back in May 2024. At the time, it was revealed that Twisters' Glen Powell was in early talks to star in the film. However, no deal was set in place.

Imax saw softer revenue and profit last quarter but blew away Wall Street estimates citing a surge in global box office in June and a big bump from the sale of Imax original documentary The Blue Angels to Amazon.
The stock popped on the numbers, up nearly 4% in premarket trade.
Sales fell 9% to $89 million for the three months ended in June but soundly beat consensus. Ditto with adjusted ebitda of $31 million (down 14%) and adjusted earnings per share of 18 cents (vs 26 cents in the 2023 quarter).
Its global box office of $196.4 million in Q2 after a June surge of hit releases accelerated momentum that has continued into Q3. It said it’s delivered 10% or more of the domestic opening on seven consecutive releases this spring on only 1% of North American screens.

For Imax CEO Richard Gelfond, the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes and a lingering pandemic is in the rearview mirror.
“With the strikes — and the lingering effects of the pandemic — firmly behind us, we are in an excellent position to fully realize the benefits of our strong, asset-lite business model,” Gelfond told analysts during a morning conference call after his company released its second-quarter financial results with a revenue and sales dip.
That optimism will be a balm to top execs at major exhibitors, who are Imax’s main customers for its theater systems and have faced a crisis of confidence after theater shutdowns during the height of the pandemic and after last year’s Los Angeles writers and actors strikes disrupted their movie pipeline.
“We believe we have reached a pivot point in the post-strike rebound, given surging demand for the Imax experience among filmmakers, studios and audiences worldwide.

Glen Powell's Rotten Tomatoes streak ended in 2023 with a 52 percent score for Anyone But You. Hit Man and Twisters could have continued Powell's "Fresh" film run. Powell's successful 2024 films would have been more impressive if Anyone But You was received better.
Glen Powell's impressive Rotten Tomatoes streak was broken in 2023, and if it weren't for his $220 million mixed-reviewed movie, Hit Man and Twisters would have continued the actor's run of "Fresh" films. Powell's career is rapidly trending upward, and he is undoubtedly the closest Hollywood is to having another certified movie star. So, his streak of positively reviewed films isn't surprising. But the fact that one project (which was a commercial success and beloved by audiences) ruined Powell's outstanding stretch of critically acclaimed movies is disappointing.

Bad Robot veteran Hannah Minghella has been hired as Head of Feature Animation and Live-Action Family Film at Netflix, Deadline can confirm. We understand that her departure from the J.J. Abrams-led company was amicable.
Also announced today was the news that Sharon Taylor, formerly CEO of Animal Logic Studios, will return to Netflix to head up production on feature animation, based out of Vancouver.
With this change, Karen Toliver and Traci Balthazor are exiting Netflix, we’re told. Both helped build the streamer’s animated film division into a powerhouse in the industry, launching hit films like Leo, Academy Award winner Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, The Sea Beast and Nimona, while also integrating Animal Logic Studios and expanding key creative partnerships.

Top Gun fans will have to wait for a new sequel as producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals there's no script yet. Tom Cruise has interesting ideas for Top Gun 3, but decision-making involves more than just Bruckheimer. While Cruise still has "juice" for box office hits, Top Gun 3 may not come as quickly as expected: elements from Maverick will likely return.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who has been in charge of the Top Gun franchise since its conception, has shared some disappointing news about a new follow-up to Top Gun: Maverick. After the 2022 film brought back the blockbuster concept to theaters in the post-covid-19 era, and it gained some nominations at the Academy Awards, many thought a third film would enter production quickly to capitalize on the phenomenon. But it seems Top Gun 3 will take a bit longer to arrive.

It’s a “Hot Glen Summer” at the movies.
Just like the immortal words of Megan Thee Stallion, who’s billed every summer since 2019 the perfect time to do “hot girl shit,” Glen Powell is heating up movie screens. Summer 2024 firmly establishes him as a power player with Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the Prime Video documentary “The Blue Angels” and Universal “Twisters” dropping in rapid succession.
In the words of Retta — who first met Powell on the 2014 indie rom-com “Sex Ed” before they reunited for “Hit Man” — “Homie is a straight up movie star.”
“This is the summer of Glen,” director Richard Linklater concurs. “They’re all ‘Johnny come lately’ to the Glen Powell thing. Anybody who’s known Glen for the last 10-plus years knows that he’s a star. He’s smart. He’s funny. He’s hard working.”

“Eric” and “Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult” were the two most-watched original series in the U.S. during the week of May 31-June 6.
“Eric,” Netflix’s Benedict Cumberbatch-led limited series, had the highest number of minutes watched in its first full week of availability, clocking in at 1.1 billion, while the TikTok docuseries followed at 714.6 million minutes watched. After “Bridgerton” dominated the top three spots on Luminate’s streaming rankings last week, the only TV title that could rival it was a complete change of pace from the high production value Regency-era drama: “Tires,” Shane Gillis’ self-funded half-hour comedy that premiered on May 23.
“Bridgerton” Season 3 of course still took the No. 1 position with 766.8 million minutes watched in its second full week of availability, coming out to an estimated 3.7 million views when divided by the 220-minute runtime of the four currently available episodes.
But “Tires” beat Season 1 and 2 of “Bridgerton,” landing at No. 2 with 447.8 million minutes watched. Divided by its 135-minute runtime, that translates to 3.3 million views — not far behind “Bridgerton” Season 3 at all. Season 2 took third place place with 394.2 million minutes watched while Season 1 took fourth place with 391.6 million minutes watched.
“Jurassic World: Chaos Theory” had its chart debut at No. 5 with 298.1 million minutes watched in its first week of availability.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has acquired Hollywood Ending, a new documentary from UnTypical, a Vice Studios Group company, and Library Films. Directed by Rebecca Chaiklin (Tiger King), the film follows the downfall of Zach Horwitz, the charismatic “midwestern, millennial Madoff” who ran a $690M Ponzi scheme under the noses of those closest to him.
Also known by his stage name Zach Avery, Horwitz is a former actor who deceived investors by falsely claiming to have lucrative licensing deals with such prominent streaming platforms as Netflix and HBO. His scheme began around 2014 when he started soliciting funds from investors, promising high returns from licensing deals for movies. Horwitz operated through his company, 1inMM Capital LLC, which he presented as successful in film distribution. To maintain the illusion of legitimacy, he provided investors with fake documents, including fabricated licensing agreements and emails purportedly from entertainment executives.

Yet again, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend top ten as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to stave off fellow newcomer The Garfield Movie by a mere $0.7 million to take the top spot prior to the holiday.
In its first weekend of release, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga brought in $25.5 million for Warner Bros., allowing it to finish just ahead of Sony Pictures Releasing’s second-place claimant, The Garfield Movie, which brought in $24.8 million during its debut weekend. Meanwhile, this pushed last weekend’s top film If to third place where it added $16.1 million for Paramount Pictures, bringing its two-week tally to $58.7 million. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dropped two spots as well, landing in fourth place this weekend with $13.4 million. This gives the 20th Century Studios film a three-week total of $122.8 million. Universal Pictures’ The Fall Guy lost a spot as it fell from...

The Blue Angels happens to be a pretty cool title for a movie title. You are not at fault if you expect it to be some sort of thrilling thing. Well, “Blue Angels” is what the United States Navy flight demonstration squadron is popularly known as. In popular culture, it is, of course, the Top Gun films that have introduced us to them. Interestingly, Glen Powell, who rose to fame thanks to Top Gun: Maverick (2022), is one of the producers of the latest The Blue Angels movie. Powell also starred in another Blue Angels-inspired movie, Devotion (2023), following his Top Gun success. The Blue Angels is a documentary, though, about the real thing. Now I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, but The Blue Angels turns out to be somewhat underwhelming—just saying.

But after the rom-com, the actor is back to what he loves doing the most, aviation, and he has the Mission: Impossible star’s influence to thank for it.
