Tim Burton's Comedy Sequel, 36 Years In The Making, Trends On Netflix After $451 Million Box Office Run
Image
Tim Burton films have always been popular with audiences, but this long-awaited sequel is dominating the Netflix charts after its impressive run in theaters. The wacky auteur who broke onto the scene with films like Edward Scissorhands is a rare example of a Hollywood visionary whose unique films are also often box office successes. Burton's keen eye for detail and illustrative style not only helped him stand out from his contemporaries, but gave each of his films a signature touch that couldn't be duplicated. Even when simply serving as a producer, Burton's fingerprints are all over the project.

Despite this vaunted reputation, Burton's films released in the last few decades have been met with a mixed response from critics and fans. His approach to popular franchises like Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland was met with little praise, and it seemed as if the Hollywood wunderkind of old had lost his touch.

Alec Baldwin Explains Why He Prefers the Original Beetlejuice After Missing Out on Last Year's Sequel
Image
Alec Baldwin played a major part of the original Beetlejuice film, but he was not among the returning stars of last year's sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The actor did watch the film, however, and he's shared his thoughts, noting how he still prefers the original movie over the sequel.

Baldwin discussed Beetlejuice during a recent interview for the One Bad Movie podcast, hosted by brother Stephen Baldwin. Alec said that he saw the sequel in theaters twice at the request of his kids, who still had only seen video clips of the original film that he was in. Baldwin then spoke about how the sequel feels more "grim" compared to the "innocent" original. The actor was also not thrilled about director Tim Burton putting an "inconceivably gorgeous" woman like Monica Bellucci in dark makeup and stitches to portray the soul-sucking ghoul Delores, the ex-wife of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton).

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Is Being Summoned to a New Streaming Platform Next Month, but Not for Long
Image
Netflix must have said his name three times, because Michael Keaton's Ghost With the Most is heading back to the platform. Before becoming the streaming titan it is today, the company was known for renting out DVDs in its signature red envelopes. The first movie sent out back in March 1998 was none other than Tim Burton's iconic comedy-horror classic Beetlejuice, and now, its sequel from last year, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is reuniting with the company next month. Starting on May 6, subscribers will be able to watch the director's long-awaited 75% Rotten Tomatoes blockbuster follow-up, which also stars Wednesday's Jenna Ortega, for a limited time only.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice finally graced theaters in September 2024 after years of attempts to bring the bioexorcist back to life with Paris and Hawaii-set sequels. Tim Burton's 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' Streams on Netflix in May, For a Limited Time Only
Image
Netflix has said his name three times, because Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is getting ready to cause havoc on the streaming service. But, just like making a deal with the titular trickster, there's a catch to the movie's new streaming home. Released in 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was almost 40 years in the making for director Tim Burton and stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara. The film opened to decent reviews (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a strong box-office performance ($451 million worldwide), but the juice has taken a surprising amount of time to get loose on streaming outside of Warner Bros.' own Max platform.

Per What's On Netflix, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has penned a contract to land on Netflix in May. According to the report, the sequel will arrive on the streamer in the US on May 6. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Netflix release comes as part of the build up to Season 2 of Tim Burton and Netflix's hit series Wednesday.

When will comedy movies rebound at the box office?
Image
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been going strong for 20 years, easily holding the record for most seasons for a sitcom. That’s pretty steady work…especially if comedy movies are bombing at the box office, as Charlie Day says.

Always Sunny star Charlie Day recently said that while he has had good opportunities to expand into comedy movies, they don’t offer the stability that the series does. “There was a time when there were a lot of big comedy movies happening, and I thought, maybe I was going to be on the road more often, and then those just kind of dried up, so I’m glad I didn’t quit my TV day job, you know?”

Day brings up an interesting topic that has been the subject of debate for a while now. Are comedies actually dead at the box office? Let’s take a look…...

Charlie Day Is Glad He Never Quit ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Now That Comedy Movie Jobs Don’t Exist Anymore
Image
According to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day, working on the same TV show for 20 years is immensely more preferable than just strapping on his job helmet, squeezing down into a job canon and firing off into job land, where mid-budget comedy movies still exist.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is coming up on two decades of TV excellence later this year, a legendary run that’s provided its stars and staff with a literally unprecedented level of job security in the history of situational comedy. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 is scheduled to premiere on July 9th when the Abbott Elementary cast comes to FX for the second part of their crosstown crossover, and Day has indicated that he and his co-stars Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton are already starting to schedule production on Season 18, with the future of the show apparently secure for...

Season 1 received 12 Emmy nominations, including for Ortega in Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She became just the third Latina ever to be nominated in a leading actress category. The series won four Emmys, though Ortega lost out to Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson on Emmy night.

Max Starts Selling ‘Extra Member’ Accounts, as Warner Bros. Discovery Follows Netflix’s Lead in Cracking Down on Password-Sharing
Image
Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to scour up additional revenue from Max subscribers who have been piggybacking off of someone else’s account.

On Tuesday, Max launched the Extra Member Add-On feature in the U.S., priced at $7.99/month. That lets a primary account owner share their Max account by inviting a friend or family member outside of their household to create a separate, standalone account with an adult profile under the same subscription. Max’s launch of the Extra Member feature comes after Wbd execs said they planned to notify users of restrictions on sharing streaming accounts outside their household.

Netflix in 2023 launched its own successful move to curb illicit password-sharing, which execs have credited with helping to boost revenue through account-sharing options. Similarly, Disney+ introduced an “Extra Member” option a last fall.

Max Extra Members will have their own login credentials separate from the primary account. Extra members...

Beetlejuice 3 is officially happening
Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O'Hara in Beetlejuice (1988)
Following a rather successful second outing last year, Warner Bros has given Beetlejuice 3 the go ahead.

After waiting several decades for a follow-up to 1988’s Beetlejuice, it looks like fans of the series won’t have to wait that long for the next one. Last year’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made some serious bank for Warner Bros, and so it appears that a sequel has been quickly commissioned. The news comes via a Deadline interview with Warner Bros co-heads, Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, two executives who have had to weather plenty of speculation about their futures of late.

All of that noise doesn’t seem to have stopped them building up the studio’s future slate, though, and with A Minecraft Movie continuing to gobble up plenty of cash at the box office (it’s now north of half a billion dollars), they have a sizeable hit to point...

A Minecraft Movie Becomes 2025's Highest-Grossing Hollywood Film in Just 2 Weekends Amid Sequel Chatter
Image
After the most successful opening weekend of 2025 at the box office, A Minecraft Movie isn't stopping. The video game adaptation of the popular game Minecraft has been a success despite poor reviews from critics and other criticism.

In its opening film, the Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment new adaptation earned twice its budget in its opening weekend alone. The movie was made on $150 million, and in its first three days, it had already covered its investment and was on its way to profit with $313 million globally. Per Deadline, A Minecraft Movie's dominance continues as it became the highest-grossing film of the year from Hollywood.

In just two weekends, A Minecraft Movie grossed $550.6 million worldwide, with $269.6 million of it from international markets, after breaking records for its lead stars. This pushed the adaptation above Captain America: Brave New World, which had been topping the domestic box office since its Feb.

Another 'Minecraft' Movie Is "Imminent" Following Unprecedented Box Office Success
Image
Looks like we’ll be punching trees and crafting sequels sooner than expected. AfterA Minecraft Movie smashed past industry expectations at the box office, Warner Bros. Pictures is wasting no time—another installment is already in the works. Studios love money, imagine! Speaking with Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairmen and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed that a sequel is moving forward fast, following a $350 million haul after just one week of release.

“The ink might not be dry on the deals yet,” De Luca said, “but imminently.” That’s a clear signal that the studio is treating the pixelated mega-hit as a top-tier franchise play, right up there with its surprise Beetlejuice Beetlejuice revival. The film, directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, took a concept many thought was unfilmable and turned it into a blockbuster. It’s Showtime!: ‘Beetlejuice 3’ Might Be Summoned at Warner Bros. According to Studio Heads
Image
After the surprise box office success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Warner Bros. Pictures might just say the name a third time. May we suggest Threetlejuice? In an exclusive interview with Deadline, studio co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy revealed that a third installment in Tim Burton’s iconic spooky franchise is already inching its way toward reality. The duo confirmed they are “imminently” developing sequels to both Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie, which became two of 2025’s most unexpected—and lucrative—blockbusters.

“The ink might not be dry on the deals yet,” De Luca said, “but imminently,” suggesting both films are quickly becoming top-priority franchise plays for the studio. That would be big news on its own, but it comes in the context of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice massively overperforming expectations. The long-gestating sequel reunited original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, while bringing in new...

Lionsgate’s unveiled new character posters for the R-rated suspense thriller Hurry Up Tomorrow. Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, stars in and co-wrote the screenplay, and apparently the film finds the four-time Grammy winner playing a version of himself.

“This experience was really introspective and cathartic for me,” stated Tesfaye in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “From writing to production and through post — I realized just how much of a catalyst this art form can be for conversations about our emotions, mental health, and vulnerabilities.”

The film also stars Jenna Ortega and Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin). Tesfaye, Ortega, and Keoghan are featured on the just-released red and black character posters.

Lionsgate’s very basic synopsis reads, “A musician plagued by insomnia is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.

Image
More Beetlejuice is on the way! Warner Brothers co-chairman/CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have confirmed that development on Beetlejuice 3 will begin "imminently" as soon as the deals are finalized.

Chatting with Deadline, Abdy and De Luca discussed the recent hits and misses at Warner Bros., from successful box office hits like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Minecraft to misses like Joker 2.

Tim Burton returned to direct Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which also saw the return of Michael Keaton as the titular character, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz. The sequel also featured several exciting new characters, such as Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter, Astrid, and Justin Theroux as Lydia's new boyfriend, Rory. Willem Dafoe, Burn Gorman, and Monica Belluci were also part of the 2024 film. It grossed over $451 million at the global box office, becoming one of last year's most profitable films.

A Minecraft Movie 2 Practically Confirmed by Warner Bros. Exec After Record-Breaking Success
Image
A Minecraft Movie continued a very popular trend of adapting video games to the small or big screen. Although the project, which had been long in development, came with initial reluctance from the critics and the industry, the adaptation proved to be a major hit.

A Minecraft Movie adapts the popular adventuring game of the same name, although the creators made sure to highlight that it's not the canon version. Instead, as its title suggests, the new movie tells one part of the bigger story created by Mojang Studios. In a new interview with Deadline, Warner Bros. co-chairmen and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed that there is a plan for A Minecraft Movie sequel.

A Minecraft Movie had the biggest opening weekend for a film in 2025, and it has already broken a series of records. It has also covered its initial investment and distribution and marketing costs,...

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice was a big success for Warner Bros., grossing over $451 million worldwide. I’m pretty sure you know what that number means — sequel. While speaking with Deadline, Warner Bros. CEO’s Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy revealed that Beetlejuice 3 is in the works.

However, it’s not quite official just yet. “Imminently,” De Luca said. “The ink might not be dry on the deals yet, but imminently.“

During the London premiere of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton didn’t seem optimistic about the chances of another sequel due to the amount of time it took to get the first sequel off the ground. “Well, if [the same] time frame goes on, I’ll be about 100,” Burton said. “So maybe. I doubt it.” It seems that things are moving a little bit faster this time around.
