Oliver Berben, who took the reins of German production and distribution powerhouse Constantin Film on March 1, faces a German media landscape that is “changing radically and quickly,” he says. In response, he is adjusting the company’s approach to the business.
He welcomes the government’s proposed reform of the German Film Law, which will change the country’s production incentives, including for television, and will introduce an obligation on broadcasters and streamers to invest 20% of sales generated in Germany back into European productions, 70% of which would have to be in the German language.
“You have stagnating funding of public broadcasters. You have declining revenues for the private stations. The question is: Is the model functioning altogether? It is not, if we just keep on doing the same thing again and again.”
He adds, “Everything is changing, and these changes, by the way, are good. Us, as producers, we need...

In den weiteren Rollen sieht man Emily Cox, Britta Hammelstein, Murathan Muslu, Peter Jordan, Pamuk Pilavci, Johannes Allmayer, Sascha Geršak, Marc Hosemann, Luca Maric.

Here in Germany at the inaugural Seriesly Berlin conference, execs from international TV sector debated market contraction, opportunities and the meaning behind “bonfires and fireworks.”
In a panel chair by Deadline’s Stewart Clarke at the Fotografiska arts center in Berlin’s Mitte, The Art of Coproduction founder Marc Lorber and Constantin Film Chief Content Officer Jan Ehlert outlined how shows could achieve success either by “burning brightly” for a short period of time or slowly gaining heat over several seasons or years.
“With the firework [shows], hopefully they burn big and bright, with lots of ‘ooh aah’ moments,” said Lorber. “Good or bad, people know about them. On the other hand, Bonfire shows smoulder and burn. They are sustainable and returnable, and people feel comfortable with them.”
Ehlert, whose company makes Netflix hit Liebes Kind (Dear Child), added there was “huge demand for all types of entertainment.”

“Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.
Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.
“Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.
Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.
Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.

Today, Apple TV+ announced, in partnership with ZDFneo, the new fast-paced, eight-episode medical drama Krank Berlin from Violet Pictures and Real Film Berlin, co-created by former emergency room physician turned screenwriter Samuel Jefferson and Viktor Jakovleski.
Krank Berlin stars Haley Louise Jones as Dr. Parker and Slavko Popadić (Crooks), alongside an ensemble cast including Şafak Şengül (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Aram Tafreshian (Dogs of Berlin), Samirah Breuer (The Gryphon), Bernhard Schütz (Barbarians), and Peter Lohmeyer (I don’t work here).
Managing a chaotic emergency room in the toughest and most overcrowded hospital in Berlin is no small task for the young Dr. Parker, who is seeking a fresh start in the big city after her private life implodes in Munich.
When she tries to implement necessary reforms, Parker is confronted with resistance from the underpaid, ill-equipped, and chronically fatigued hospital staff, who survive only with an indispensable dose of black humor.

When Comcast-owned Sky Deutschland cancelled its usual drama event at the Munich Film Festival at short notice last summer, it came as a surprise. That surprise quickly turned to shock and bitter disappointment when the pay-tv giant revealed it wasn’t simply nixing a networking bash, it was exiting the original drama business full stop.
More bad news followed as the local impact of Paramount Global reining in spend on original international drama kicked in – German shows were yanked off the streamer and projects in the works canned. Heart of Invictus dropped on Netflix on August 30, 2023. The show from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Productions received a favorable response from critics, with an 86% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But the average Netflix subscriber wasn’t enthralled, and the series failed to crack the streamer’s Top 10 list of most-watched shows in the days after its release.
Now, Netflix has revealed more details about how many people watched Heart of Invictus, and it’s not pretty. The show racked up just 300,000 views in months following its late-August release, according to What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,...

The streaming giant’s massive May 23 data trove for the second half of 2023 includes almost 16,000 series, movies and specials, which accounted for about 90 billion hours of viewing worldwide. The shows and movies below are … not a big part of that number, to say the least. Rather, they’re some of the higher-profile projects that, relatively speaking, almost no one watched. (For comparison’s sake, some of the biggest titles are also included).

Benedict Cumberbatch’s new six-part series that follows a desperate father in search of his missing son is now dominating Netflix’s global chart, topping even the hyped third season of Bridgerton. It proves people’s never-ending interest in chilling crime stories.
Here are 5 miniseries that are similar to Eric and available for streaming on Netflix too.
1. Safe (2018)
This British miniseries is reminiscent of Eric more than others, as it also follows a father who has his child vanished from home. The show is led by the Dexter star, Michael C. Hall, who portrays a widowed surgeon whose daughter is missing.
Just like Eric, it blends a dark mystery story, full of intrigue and deception, with deep psychological drama of the protagonist, who devotes himself entirely to searching for his closest person.

While Netflix has expanded the type of programming it offers, most recently venturing into live sports and other events, co-ceo Ted Sarandos has indicated in a new interview that news is not for Netflix.
“We don’t do breaking news and that kind of thing, because I think there’s a lot of other outlets for it. People aren’t looking to us for that,” Sarandos told The New York Times in a wide-ranging interview that ran online Saturday when asked what’s not right for Netflix. Yet the executive — whose company a year ago launched an ad tier — in the same answer said he’s open to new things: “I don’t think that there’s a clean answer because the best version of something may work really well for Netflix but just hasn’t worked to date.”

How successful? Well, the series is Netflix’s most-watched show between July and December 2023. Yes, that means it beat every other Netflix original series that year, showing just how many viewers watched it.
What’s also interesting is that the show had a noticeable effect on the anime series and films, with these also getting a major increase in viewership.

Netflix, which for years had claimed that live sports did not factor into its business model, is now a major player in the field, recently snapping up Christmas NFL games. But before committing to established, conventional sports franchises like NFL football games and WWE Raw, the streamer tested the waters with stunt-y, made-for-tv sport events, starting with The Netflix Cup on Nov. 14, 2023.
According to Netflix’s second expansive viewership report released today, The Netflix Cup, a golf match featuring drivers and golfers from its docu series Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing, logged paltry 700,000 views in the second half of 2023.

Remember when HBO licensed those originals to Netflix last year?
Well, it’s finally time to see if the move paid off for Netflix, as the streamer just released another round of data that encapsulates all viewing on the platform from July to December 2023. That includes shows like Insecure, Band of Brothers, The Pacific and the rest of the HBO originals that landed on Netflix last July.
So, how did they do?
It looks like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was the star of the show, as Ballers tallied 33.5M views across all five seasons — by far the highest of the bunch. Season 1 came in No. 139 on the overall list with just under 11M views alone. Considering the list includes thousands of titles, that’s pretty good.

The show will be written by Frank Spotnitz, whose credits include “The Man in the High Castle,” “Ransom” and “Leonardo.”
The series follows young survivors of World War II who go to work for Allied prosecutors trying Nazi criminals in Nuremberg, only to find their quest for justice undermined by secret efforts to build a new world order based on power, not principle.

Its relevance has never been greater, and I am filled with a humble sense of duty to tell this story faithfully.

Veteran international film executive Martin Moszkowicz will step down as chairman of the executive board of German mini-major Constantin Film after his current contract expires early next year. Deputy chairman Oliver Berben will take over the role.
Moszkowicz, who has overseen the production of the Resident Evil and Mortal Instruments franchises at Constantin will stay on as a producer with the Munich-based outfit after his contract as chairman runs out on Feb. 29, 2024. Moszkowicz has been part of Constantin’s management since 1990 and took over as chairman in 2014.

“Beckham” has officially been defeated — the Netflix miniseries, not the soccer star. “The Fall of the House of Usher” moved from second place to first on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV list Tuesday.
This shift comes a week ahead of Halloween, fitting for the spooky miniseries based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. The series from Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy secured 7.9 million views in its second week. With those numbers, it beat out last week’s reigning champion “Beckham,” which secured 6.9 million views.
Also on the English-language Top 10 list were the U.K. limited series “Bodies” in the No. 3 spot with 5.5 million views, the fantasy series “I Woke Up a Vampire” in the No. 4 spot with 3.4 million views and Season 4 of the comedy “Sex Education” in the No.

After a week in second place, Suits returned to the top of the streaming charts, extending its record run as the No. 1 overall title in Nielsen’s weekly rankings. Netflix’s Sex Education also scored well for the week of its final season premiere, and a pair of HBO series joined the rankings after their Netflix debuts.
Suits drew 1.79 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock in the United States for the week of Sept. 18-24 — marking its 13th week as the overall No. 1 in the rankings and extending its own record. In the 14 weeks since it first made the rankings, the legal drama has racked up 40.55 billion minutes of viewing — more than 9 billion minutes more than the second-place show for 2023, Bluey on Disney+ (the kids’ favorite had 856 million minutes of viewing for the week).

Suits‘ three-month stranglehold on the top of the Nielsen streaming charts has come to an end.
Netflix’s Virgin River moved ahead of Suits and claimed the No. 1 overall spot for the week of Sept. 11-17. The drama, whose fifth season premiered Sept. 7, improved by 7 percent from the previous week with 2.05 billion minutes of viewing. Suits, meanwhile, slipped by 19.5 percent to a still very strong 1.9 billion minutes and was second overall. The former USA Network series had spent the previous 12 weeks at No. 1.
The Morning Show became the third Apple TV+ series (after Ted Lasso and Hijack) to make the streaming rankings. It finished eighth among original series for the week of its season three premiere with 350 million minutes of viewing. Netflix’s German thriller Dear Child moved up to second among originals with 720 million minutes.
On the movie charts, Elemental scored a big streaming debut on Disney+ with 1.73 billion minutes of viewing.

After 12 weeks on top, “Suits” has finally fallen — but not too far.
The USA Network procedural has concluded a summer-long reign as the most-watched streaming title, which began when Netflix acquired it in June — though Peacock had already been streaming the series. With a still-whopping 1.9 billion watched, “Suits” took second place on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for Sept. 11-17.
Now, “Virgin River” sits in the spot that belonged to “Suits” for so long. The Netflix drama was watched for 2.1 billion minutes during this viewing window, the first full week of availability for Season 5 Part 1. This marks a jump from last week, when the series landed at No. 2 with 1.9 billion minutes.
With 1.7 billion minutes watched, the No. 3 spot went to “Elemental,” the Pixar film that hit theaters in June and debuted on Disney+ during this viewing window with five days to spare. It was followed by “Bluey,” another children’s title.

Suits finally fell from grace.
For the first time in 12 weeks (and after breaking another record the week before), the USA Network legal drama was bumped from its top spot on the Nielsen streaming charts from September 11-17.
Don’t get it twisted, Suits still racked up 1.9 billion viewing minutes and took second place during this interval across Netflix and Peacock — which is icing on the cake for NBCUniversal, as the studio now appears to be eyeing an expansion of the Suits universe — but it was heavyweight Virgin River that came out on top.
The Netflix original hit the Nielsen charts last week at No. 2, following the debut of Season 5. With a full week of availability on the streaming platform, the latest installment helped boost Virgin River to an impressive 2.1 billion minutes viewed.
That, of course, is across all 52 episodes, since Nielsen doesn’t differentiate its viewing metrics by season.
