We knew A24 had a decision to make on its streaming ambitions. The indie distributor’s output deal with Showtime, struck in 2019, expired in November, leaving A24’s movies without a dedicated digital home. Free agency can be quite lucrative.
Weeks later, A24 signed with Showtime’s biggest rival, HBO, and its sister streaming service Max. Upgrade.
A December 6 announcement unveiled a multiyear, pay-1 output deal for new A24 theatrical movies to run exclusively on HBO and Cinemax, and stream only on Max. The deal also extended A24’s 2022 licensing agreement with Max for older films, which covered more than two dozen movies.
Some of the newer A24 fare heading to the Warner Bros. Discovery platforms in the pay-1 window include 2023 theatrical releases “Past Lives,” “Dicks: The Musical,” “Priscilla,” “Dream Scenario,” “The Zone of Interest,” “The Iron Claw,” and the restored re-release of Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense.

Stephen Curry is still feeling the glow of winning the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament last weekend.
He grabbed the title with an eagle putt on the 18th green on Sunday, but it’s a shot he made Saturday that continues to reverberate: a hole in one on the course’s par-3 no. 7. After draining the pitching wedge, he sprinted down the fairway in celebration at speeds not normally achieved by golfers unless they’re riding in a motorized cart.
“I had to show off a little bit of athleticism,” Curry tells Deadline. “I kind of blacked out, so I don’t even know where that top-end speed and going from zero to a hundred real quick came from. But that’s what happens when you don’t have any real preparation for thinking that hole in one was going to happen.”

Ryan Coogler and Peter Nicks met in 2012 when Coogler was making “Fruitville Station” and needed help securing access to a location. Nicks, who was finishing his first feature documentary, “The Waiting Room, came to the rescue. Nine years later, Cooglar hired Nicks to run the nonfiction arm of his production company Proximity Media, which has a five-year overall exclusive television deal with The Walt Disney Co.
The fruits of that partnership have been revealed this summer. Proximity’s first feature documentary, “Anthem,” which Nicks directed, was released in June on Hulu. On July 21, Nicks’ “Stephen Curry: Underrated” will debut on Apple TV +. The doc, which chronicles the NBA star’s life and career, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“When I heard that Ryan was starting a company, I put together this little PowerPoint presentation and pitched him,” remembers Nicks. “I said, ‘Hey, are you guys going to support nonfiction?...

If the measure of a good documentary about a superstar athlete is in synthesizing what makes its subject tick, “Stephen Curry: Underrated” gets passing grades. And that’s no small compliment, considering the movie spends most of its time at school, a familiar place for director Peter Nicks, whose previous doc, “Homeroom,” served up a very different look at education. With enough fresh stories to keep basketball fanatics engaged and a coda that every soccer mom will appreciate, this is a film that’s worthy of its subject.
Produced in part by Curry’s Unanimous Media, “Underrated” leans on abundant clips of the hoop star’s career and interviews with family, coaches and college teammates, as well as fly-on-the-wall moments that come with the kind of access filmmakers get when the subject helps to drive the project. Nicks casts Curry as an undersized underdog-turned-college phenom who becomes a four-time NBA...

Napoleon is on his way.
During Monday night’s Sony presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the studio revealed the first footage ever of Ridley Scott’s epic from Apple Original Films. Directed by Scott from a screenplay by David Scarpa, Napoleon stars Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. The feature is notable as it signals Apple is serious about entering the theatrical space, which is welcome news for theater owners.
Sony film boss Tom Rothman introduced the footage, noting the film will have a “robust theatrical window and a full-throttle marketing campaign before moving to Apple TV+.” He added to theater owners, “We trust you will all give maximum support to this film,” as it could portend more cooperation between theaters and streamers to come.
Rothman noted that an epic tale of this scale has not been seen in years.
Indeed, the footage shown supports that notion.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise.""Evil Dead Rise," the latest installment in the now 40-odd-year-old "Evil Dead" franchise, is filled to the brim with evidence of writer/director Lee Cronin's bonafides toward being a fan of the series. While the film isn't merely a work of fan service, the movie is suffused with references to the earlier "Evil Dead" films, from Deadites screaming "Dead by dawn!" to a very particular clock being seen at a cabin in the film's opening sequence.
Yet Cronin isn't content with paying homage to just the "Evil Dead" series — in addition to multiple references to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "Evil Dead Rise" contains some latent homages to numerous other horror films, including Lamberto Bava's similar demons-loose-in-a-high-rise splatter opus, "Demons 2." Most surprisingly, however, "Evil Dead Rise" appears to have a good deal in common with another Sam Raimi film,...

Of all the major American sports, basketball is the one where personality shines through the easiest. There’s no helmet, no facemask. Any one player only has to share the court with nine others. The athleticism, the fire, and the smiles all come through. So one of the biggest challenges for any documentary filmmaker trying to make a biography of a professional basketball player is to contend with what’s already freely given.
In the world of the NBA, Stephen Curry isn’t one of the largest personalities, but he’s not a blank slate either. Watch clips from any of his Golden State Warriors’ title runs or his legendary game-winners, and you’ll see a man who isn’t afraid...
