Taron Egerton Watches an Investigation Go Up in ‘Smoke’ in Exhilarating New Apple TV+ Series Trailer

Last year, Taron Egerton took over Netflix with the hit movie Carry-On. This year, the British actor is diving once again into an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but this time in more understated tones. Today, Apple TV+ released the trailer for Smoke, a new investigative series that centers on an investigator who is trying to locate two serial arsonists that are wreaking fiery havoc and challenging the police. The series is set to premiere on June 27.
The trailer for Smoke suggests that the fire is one way to grab the attention of the police, but there's something else brewing that we can't quite put our finger on. This is reflected in Egerton's character, Dave Gudsen, who gets so deeply involved in the mystery that it might bring some permanent consequences for his psyche. In that scenario, it looks like police detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) will be fundamental to keeping Dave grounded during the investigation.

Charlize Theron has thrown herself into several big action blockbuster movies in the last decade, including several turns in the Fast & Furious saga, and her Netflix franchise, The Old Guard. However, she made an appearance during Netflix’s Upfronts event sporting an injury sustained while working on her newest action thriller, Apex, which sees her teaming up with Carry-On star, Taron Egerton.
While it is hard to imagine Theron being able to outdo some of her previous thrillers in terms of action set-pieces, as Apex focuses on "a woman trying to rediscover herself only to be hunted by a ruthless and unforgiving human predator,” and takes place among plenty of precarious-looking mountains, it seems that she found a way to do just that, even if it meant risking her life – Tom Cruise style. She said:

“Carry-On” was a huge hit for Netflix. “Nickel Boys” earned Oscar nominations. And now “Sinners” has opened to rave reviews. These three very different films share one common bond, says Brittany Chandler, director of Film New Orleans. They all shot in and around New Orleans.
“Sinners” reportedly spent more than $65 million on location in Louisiana. Yet all that success was jeopardized last fall when Louisiana’s governor, Jeff Landry, backed by the state’s House of Representatives, moved to eliminate the state’s film tax credits. That would have dealt a devastating blow to an industry still trying to regain its footing in the state after the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023.
Back in 2002, Louisiana had been the pioneering state in tax incentives; it had worked so well that about half the parishes in the state had hosted a film or TV crew in the subsequent five years. So everyone from...

If you’re craving suspense at 30,000 feet, this is where to start streaming.
I’m seeing “Fight or Flight” tonight, and it totally got me in the mood for some classic airplane thrillers — the kind where you’re stuck at 30,000 feet, something’s gone horribly wrong, and nobody’s coming to help. But once I started craving more midair suspense, a familiar question arose: where do you actually stream the good ones? That question kicked off this article, and after some digging, the answer became clear — it’s Netflix. I wasn’t just looking for quantity (though that helps), I wanted a solid mix of high-stakes classics, modern hits, and original thrillers that actually deliver. Netflix isn’t packed with endless options, but the ones it does have? Great. Here’s why it’s the go-to streamer if you’re in the mood for plane-based panic.

From the phenomenal action director Timo Tjahjanto, The Big 4 is just one of the many action films the filmmaker has produced for Netflix. However, unlike his other movies, The Big 4 is as much comedy as action.
The story revolves around four former assassins who emerge from retirement to help a cop solve a mysterious murder. While boasting Tjahjanto’s trademark brutal combat and fight choreography, The Big 4 has an air of lightheartedness and charm that helps it stand out from Netflix’s other offerings in the action genre.

Netflix boss Ted Sarandos isn’t likely to be down your local Odeon anytime soon: cinemas, he argues, are an “outmoded idea, for most people.”
Netflix boss Ted Sarandos appears to be in competition with Warner Bros Discovery chief David Zaslav in a quest to see who can get the most Christmas cards. Zaslav, hasn’t exactly endeared himself to cinephiles, having overseen the deletion of several completed films in exchange for a tax break. Sarandos? Well, he’s doubling down on his anti-cinema stance, as he continues to bang the Netflix drum.
Netflix has famously been averse to cinema releases, unless it’s required to do so to qualify for awards, and/or keep major talent happy. Ted Sarandos has been chatting at the Time100 summit, another high profile event to which our invite must have got lost in the post. And he insists that Netflix is “saving Hollywood...

Dean Norris is drawing inspiration from two key men in his life as he expands his role as Randall in Law & Order: Organized Crime: series star Christopher Meloni and Norris’ own older brother. The latter is fitting, in fact, because the character of Randall, who was introduced last season on the hit show, is Detective Elliot Stabler’s (Meloni) older brother. In a recent MovieWeb interview, Norris told us how his older bro helped him shape his role.
“I actually kind of use some of [my brother’s] characteristics in Randall, even though they're completely different types of guys. But certain elements of him… I kind of think about when I play Randall. Brothers are brothers. There's a certain universality to it. And it's nice to have somebody working as your brother — somebody that you're friends with. You know, Chris and I have some history. We did an independent movie together...

It has taken a few years, but more legacy Hollywood studios’ streaming businesses have started turning annual profits, with the rest touting progress toward that goal.
Netflix, crowned on Wall Street as the undisputed king of streaming, grew its subscribers, revenue and profit in 2024. Meanwhile, among studios — which have been refocused on streaming profits after their initial bullseye on subscriber gains — Warner Bros. Discovery last year managed to multiply a small 2023 profit for the business that includes, among others, its streaming operations, while Disney swung to its first-ever full calendar-year streaming profit. And Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Paramount Global narrowed the losses in the divisions with their core streaming businesses with an eye on profitability ahead.
Boosting the bottom lines were such factors as more selective spending on original programming, price increases and a push of cheaper subscription tiers that include advertising. “Netflix spends more on direct-to-consumer (Dtc) content than any other company,...

Gotham Award winner Danielle Deadwyler (Till) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Street, a feature adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, in which she’s set to star.
Also aboard the project is Gina Atwater (Westworld), who will write the script and serve as executive producer.
Reissued in 2022, Petry’s 1946 debut novel was famously the first book by a Black woman to sell over one million copies. This is the harrowing story of young Black woman Lutie Johnson (Deadwyler) and her spirited struggle to raise her son amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem in the late 1940s.
In a statement accompanying the development announcement, Deadwyler said, “Ann Petry’s The Street has quaked my understanding of motherhood, Black and American family life experiences on how to just get by (historically), and the festering emotions that seed alongside the wilted...

There are few ways for a film to date itself quite like a premise entirely reliant on a piece of trendy technology, Try as Apple might to deny it, there’s simply no way of knowing whether or not the famed AirDrop feature will constitute a lasting part of our everyday experiences in the same manner as the phones on which it’s used. Not to suggest that Christopher Landon’s “Drop” is in any way framed like a shameless ad for the iPhone feature. On the contrary, the particular use of the program in this film may very well leave Tim Cook shaking in his turtleneck.
Of course, this would be ignoring the fact that “Drop” is, in premise, not all that dissimilar to an entirely different confined thriller made over a decade ago—switch its high-rise restaurant setting for an airplane, its AirDrop gimmick for a few simple anonymous texts,...

Barring a few exceptions, the last few months have been quite underwhelming for the horror genre. The curse appears to be continuing this year, with high-profile bombs such as Wolf Man and Heart Eyes getting the ball rolling for The Woman in the Yard to under-perform as well. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and starring Danielle Deadwyler, the movie barely held on to a spot in the top five list domestically in its second weekend, as it passed a minor milestone. It remains the lowest-grossing film of Collet-Serra’s career, during which he has delivered several mid-budget genre hits.
With $16 million domestically, and a negligible haul so far from overseas markets, the film’s cumulative global haul sits at $17 million. The Woman in the Yard only cost around $12 million to produce, which means that it is now in the clear. But it still has a long way to go before its...

The latest Blumhouse Productions project from Jaume Collet-Serra, the man behind Netflix's top-debuting movie of 2024, Carry-On, The Woman in the Yard, entered the 2025 theatrical circuit amidst a volatile landscape where most movies are facing poor reception and dropping ticket sales. With that in mind, strong reviews were always going to be key in helping the film find its feet and hopefully earn a successful run in theaters. Alas, that wasn't to be the case, with both audiences and critics alike tending to favor negativity when posing their view on the film.

Sometimes, moms really do know best. That’s true not only for Sofia Carson’s character in the upcoming film The Life List, but also in real life.
Shortly after Purple Hearts came out in 2022, Carson was in a meeting and received an email with the subject line “The Life List.” The actress and producer knew it was a script, but she didn’t have time to read it just then. A few minutes later, she got a text from her mom that said, “Stop whatever you’re doing and read this script.” She’s sure glad she did.
Carson soon poured herself into The Life List’s Alex Rose, a young woman who doesn’t know how to get out of the rut she’s stuck in. And the only person who can push her to become who she’s meant to be is the one she just lost — her mother,...

Joe and Anthony Russo, the Cleveland-born filmmakers who started off directing small-scale comedies and episodes of “Arrested Development” before being knighted by the Marvel Studios apparatus, have a long history of saying provocative stuff in interviews. Sometimes you get the sense that they truly believe what they’re saying (Anthony proclaimed that everything developed at their studio Agbo “has universe potential”), other times it comes off as something more cartoonishly antagonistic (like when Joe said “this idea that the theater is a sacred space is bulls–t”).
But in the lead-up to their latest, a $320 million sci-fi extravaganza for Netflix called “The Electric State,” they were oddly quiet.
There was no declaration of intent, no premature announcement of a series of interconnected movies and series that make up a vast, overarching “Electric State” mythology. Instead, there was a smattering of polite interviews and a worldwide promotional tour that included stops in Los Angeles,...

Hot off the success of Carry-On, which was released in December and delivered the top debut for any Netflix film in 2024, director Jaume Collet-Serra delivered his first theatrical release in three years, The Woman in the Yard. Produced by horror specialists Blumhouse and distributed by Universal, the movie secured a spot in the top five list at the domestic box office, but it wasn't able to crack double digits. Collet-Serra's last theatrical film was the mega-budget misfire Black Adam, which generated around $390 million worldwide against a reported budget of almost $300 million.
It marked his second outing with star Dwayne Johnson, following the adventure film Jungle Cruise, which was released day-and-date on the Disney+ streaming service during the pandemic, under-performing with around $220 million worldwide against a reported budget of $200 million. The Woman in the Yard has the potential to become Collet-Serra's first theatrical hit since 2018's The Commuter. The last of...

Blumhouse just can't catch a break these days when it comes to how critics react to their films. All but one of their 2024 releases were universally panned by movie pundits, with James Watkins' Speak No Evil being the exception. 2025 hasn't been so hot, either, as Wolf Man was yet another divisive release from the famed production studio, and it seems that trend is continuing with their latest horror offering, The Woman in the Yard.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, The Woman in the Yard stars Danielle Deadwyler as Ramona, a grieving widow who must care for her children all by herself in a rural farmhouse. One day, a lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black appears on the family's front lawn without explanation and warns them, "Today's the day." Like most Blumhouse movies, the premise seems interesting, but according to its recently revealed Rotten Tomatoes score, The Woman in the Yard...

Carry-On’s Sofia Carson is a young woman whose mother sends her messages beyond the grave in a mushy Ps I Love You-esque drama
There are big, all-consuming emotions contained within the cosy Netflix weepie The Life List, a film about grief, family, love, dreams, heartbreak and the courage to strive for the life you truly want rather than the one you’ve settled for. Based on the bestselling novel by Lori Nelson Spielman, it’s a proudly heart-over-head confection and given how the platform has become a reliable provider of movies and shows aimed at younger women who have been underserved elsewhere, it’ll probably find its audience.
But writer-director Adam Brooks, who knows this world better than most, having been involved in sturdy star-led studio films such as Definitely, Maybe; Wimbledon; and the hugely underrated Meg Ryan romcom French Kiss, can’t quite squeeze the tears or...

The metaphors weigh heavily in the latest Blumhouse horror film, which relies more on subtle atmospherics than their usual offerings. The sort of thoughtful, measuredly-paced chiller that wouldn’t look out of place as a Twilight Zone episode — or, if it were amplified to bigger proportions, a Jordan Peele movie — The Woman in the Yard belies its disingenuously bland title with its considerable thematic ambitions. The film doesn’t fully live up to them, but it deserves credit for trying something different in an oversaturated, frequently exploitative genre.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra — who’s lately trafficked in such large-scale productions as Jungle Cruise, Black Adam and Carry-On — returns to his horror roots (House of Wax, Orphan) with this modestly budgeted effort. Set entirely at the sort of isolated rural farmhouse that Andrew Wyeth would have painted, it revolves around a family consisting of Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler, Till and The Piano Lesson...
