“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series currently in the works at Amazon MGM Studios has found its showrunner.
Variety has learned exclusively that Veena Sud will head up the series, which will be set in the world of the so-called Millennium novels originally written by Stieg Larsson.
Variety previously reported that the series was in development in May 2020, though no showrunner was attached at that time. It was originally reported to be a new standalone story about one of the novels’ main characters, Lisbeth Salander, but current plot details remain under wraps. Amazon MGM Studios will produce along with Left Bank Pictures, which is based at Sony Pictures Television.
Sud is no stranger dark crime and mystery dramas. She is best known for developing the series “The Killing,” which was based on the Danish series “Forbrydelsen.” She also served as executive producer and showrunner on that series. The show...

Zarifa Ghafari was only 26 when she became the mayor of Maidan Shar, which made her the youngest mayor in Afghanistan history (and one of the only women to ever hold the position). About a year and a half into her tenure, the Taliban took control of the country with dire consequences for its citizens, women’s rights and Ghafari in particular.
Marcel Mettelsiefen and Tamana Ayazi capture the lead-up to these events in their documentary “In Her Hands,” which held its world premiere at the Toronto film festival. The director duo and Ghafari sat down at TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at TIFF to talk about how the film came together and Ghafari’s journey.
Ayazi and Mettelsiefen first began working together in 2017, when the Taliban and the U.S. government entered into peace negotiations.

Taylor Sheridan is single-handedly making Paramount one of biggest success stories in television. The season 4 finale of Yellowstone, airing on Paramount Network, brought in a reported 9.3 million viewers to watch the Dutton family drama. Its prequel, 1883 debuted with over 6 million viewers, and gained so much momentum over it’s 10-episode run, that when the show had its recent finale, its popularity superseded the numbers set by Yellowstone, becoming the most in-demand program on Paramount+.
Paramount, through both its cable channel (Paramount Network) and it’s streaming service (Paramount+) has firmly attached the franchise flag to both Sheridan and his Yellowstone universe, and yet the prolific cowboy-creator is trying to prove he is much more than a one-trick horse. Pun intended.
Here’s what fans of Sheridan’s work can look forward to across Paramount Network, Paramount+, Peacock and other streaming services.

ViacomCBS missed Wall Street forecasts for earnings per share in the fourth quarter, but added a record 9.4 million streaming subscribers and smashed revenue projections.
Wall Street analysts had expected earnings of 43 cents, but they came in at 26 cents on an adjusted, diluted basis compared with $1.04 in the year-earlier quarter.
Revenue of $8 billion, though, far outdistanced estimates for $7.51 billion, climbing 16%.
Investors seemed unnerved by the earnings miss, sending shares down 4% in after-hours trading after they had closed the regular session at $35.99.
Streaming was by far the standout category in terms of revenue, shooting up 48% to $1.3 billion on the top line. Advertising, by contrast, flatlined at $2.6 billion, up just 1% due to lower political spending and fewer linear impressions.
The streaming subscriber gains were led by Paramount+, which added 7.3 million subscribers to get to 32.8 million by the December 31 end of the quarter. The company credited Clifford The Big Red Dog, a Paramount animated...

Paramount Network has unveiled some statistics for Yellowstone Season 4 Episode 10 -- the most recent finale for the Taylor Sheridan-created drama.
On Paramount Network alone, the highly-anticipated conclusion managed 9.3 million total viewers -- a rise of 81% vs. the Yellowstone Season 3 finale.

Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, […]

For politicians, a statement like, “Our goal is to provide municipal services first,” isn’t a call to action. Not much in David Osit’s documentary “Mayor” is. But when Musa Hadid, the mayor of the West Bank city of Ramallah, delivers those words during a meeting about Donald Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, he delivers those prosaic words with a surprisingly inspirational tone.

The Academy dropped another 33 feature films into the online screening room for members of its Documentary Branch on Oct. 30, giving the Oscars doc race its biggest influx of new films to date. The branch now has 86 films to consider, with two or three more batches of films (and potentially more than 50 additional contenders) likely to be added to the field by early January.
Coming the same week that the Critics Choice Documentary Awards announced its nominees and the International Documentary Association’s Ida Documentary Awards revealed the 30-film shortlist from which it will make its final choices, the Academy move kicked the Oscar doc race into another gear in a year that promises to be highly competitive.
Among the docs that were made available to voters this week were Bryce Dallas Howard’s film about fatherhood, “Dads,” which means she’ll be competing against her father, Ron Howard, who is...

"I feel jealous when I visit other cities." Film Movement has released an official trailer for a documentary titled Mayor, which has been winning a few awards at film festivals including the Next:wave Award at Cpx:dox Fest, and the Reva & David Logan Grand Jury Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Fest this year. The film is a compelling and darkly comedic profile of the life of Musa Hadid, the charismatic mayor of the Palestinian city called Ramallah, who aspires to lead the city into the future. Filmed over 18 months, Mayor is aimed at Westerners, particularly Americans. Reviews praise the doc film as a "gripping" story of a mayor "whose job consists of the mundane tasks of running a local government mixed with the extraordinary circumstances of navigating the repercussions of a geopolitical conflict. A sincere tale of a public servant who's seeking to lead in a world that’s stacked against him.
