Protracted radio silence on the status of a developing project isn't usually a good sign, often hinting at bumps in development. Ever since Lionsgate announced in 2023 that it was rebooting its beloved Leprechaun franchise, not much has been heard of the project. Now, new reports reveal that the reboot movie that tapped Felipe Vargas as director has suffered a setback as Vargas has reportedly departed the project. While a director's reason for bailing on a project is often due to differences with the larger creative team, no reason has been given for Vargas's exit.
A consistent disappointment on the critical side of things, the Leprechaun films have been a top property for Lionsgate, thanks to a loyal fanbase. Save for the first two installments in the franchise, the subsequent movies have all been released direct-to-video. Regardless, it's proven a lucrative venture for Lionsgate, with the physical copies flying off the shelves.

Back in June of 2023, it was announced that Lionsgate had given the greenlight to a new film in the Leprechaun franchise – a project described as a “reimagining,” with Felipe Vargas, director of the award-winning short film Milk Teeth, on board to direct. Nine months later, Vargas said he was hoping to do something gory, sexy, crazy, and elevated with the property… But it wasn’t to be. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Vargas is no longer attached to direct the film.
Back in 2024, Vargas told Splattercast, “I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy. … I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going...

About two years ago, we heard that Emeraude Toubia, who is best known for playing the character Isabelle Lightwood in 55 episodes of the Freeform TV series Shadowhunters (a.k.a. Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments), had signed on to star in the “high concept” horror film Rosario, which would mark the feature directorial debut of Felipe Vargas. That project has since made its way through production and is ready for a theatrical release that’s scheduled for May 2nd – and with that date just one month away, a trailer has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Alan Trezza (We Summon the Darkness), Rosario sees Toubia taking on the role of the title character, Wall Street stockbroker, Rosario Fuentes, who returns to her grandmother’s apartment after her sudden death. Fans of the Leprechaun horror franchise longing for an update on the new reboot movie that was announced in June 2023 are in for some bad news. What’s the status on Vargas’ Leprechaun movie, you ask? Well, Bloody Disgusting’s sources have learned that Felipe Vargas is no longer directing the new Leprechaun movie for Lionsgate.
Whoever ends up taking over as director, the next Leprechaun movie will be the ninth installment in the franchise. Mike Van Waes wrote the screenplay, with Roy Lee producing.

One of the most iconic classics in the harem genre, High School DxD is what many consider the golden standard of action-comedy ecchi. Not all anime are created equal. Over the years, some of the most well known and highly rated manga have been adapted with subpar animation, poor writing, and diverging plot from the source material. From studios mishandling source material to being forced to create an anime online story, some anime adaptations were bound to fail from the start.
Sometimes, it's better to skip certain adaptations than waste the time necessary to regret the experience entirely. Not all adaptations are bad, considering the vast majority of all anime are adapted from their manga or light novel counterparts. But not every adaptation is given the love and attention needed to truly thrive, let alone bomb.

Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. Actor David Dastmalchian's collaborations with Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve made him the directors' go-to source for learning about each other.
Following the release of his new horror film Late Night with the Devil, Dastmalchian spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his unique career path and work as a character actor. This path, which began with a small role in The Dark Knight, would lead to him appearing in three of Villeneuve's films and, more recently, joining Nolan's star-studded Oppenheimer cast as Atomic Energy Committee executive director William L. Borden. When asked what it was like working with Nolan again, Dastmalchian revealed that he hadn't "seen him since The Dark Knight other than one chance run-in at a park when I was playing with my kids. So I got a chance to thank him for inviting me to be a part of [Oppenheimer], and then he told me how...

Nine months have gone by since Lionsgate announced that they were moving forward with a Leprechaun “reimagining” that had Felipe Vargas, director of the award-winning short film Milk Teeth, on board to direct. During a new interview with Splattercast, Vargas confirmed that the reimagining is still in development, and that he’s hoping to do something gory, sexy, crazy, and elevated with this property.
Vargas told Splattercast (with thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for the transcription), “I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.” He said that they’re still figuring out the tone for this movie and what the balance of horror and comedy will be. “I would love for it to...

Anime typically involves at least a small amount of fanservice, and this isn't always a bad thing. Fanservice is added to please the audience at a base level, and series like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Kill La Kill prove that fanservice can be thrown in — or even be a core part of an anime's plot — without taking away from its overall enjoyment. However, because much of fanservice is sexual in nature or at least suggestive, it's easy to go overboard and ruin a compelling story with uncomfortable or unnecessary additions.
10 Anime Spinoffs That Didn't Disappoint
Some more serious and compelling shows, like Taboo Tattoo with rich lore and interesting characters, are bogged down so much by their fanservice that many can't recommend or even finish watching. Others like Rosario + Vampire stray so far away from their source material while pandering to their audience that it loses its actual meaning.

A few days after AFM wrapped in Santa Monica, the dearth of substantial deals trickling in is pointing to a weakened film sales market which is grappling with structural changes and the reverberations of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Global industry players came into the AFM with reasonable hopes of dealmaking after a quiet Toronto festival, even if many packages were held back due to the strike. Yet, the main talking point of this AFM came down to the dysfunctional logistics of the event which was held for the first time at the Meridien Delfina hotel instead of the beachfront Loews.
“The logistics of AFM were more noisy than the actual market of AFM,” admits Scott Shooman, who was named head of film earlier this year at AMC Networks, a portfolio that encompasses IFC Films, Rlje Films and the streaming service Shudder.

Demons, poltergeists, and Frankenstein-like creations don't just make great costumes — they make great characters, too. Not all monsters in anime are horrific; some anime have a diverse range of monsters with more cartoony, Halloween vibes than straightforward horror. Their cast of characters comprising vampires, ghosts, ghouls, and zombies are like a love letter to "The Monster Mash" and make year-round entertaining watches.
Sometimes, the protagonist is an unwitting human who serves as a foil to the supernatural that surrounds them, while other monster anime are full of sympathetic, humanized monsters. Some titles really lean into seinen-level horror, while others are more lighthearted, like The Munsters meets anime.

Star Wars Rebels may not often be considered the top Star Wars animated show, but the series is incredible and introduced fans to the wonderful crew of the Ghost. Hera, Kanan, Ezra, Sabine, Zeb, and Chopper are stunning characters who further enrich the Star Wars universe. With the release of Ahsoka coming and multiple Rebels characters appearing, fans could use a reminder of what happened at the end of the series. Star Wars Rebels may have started as a show for kids, but not all characters received a happy ending.
The Ghost Crew in Star Wars Rebels was a close-knit group of freedom fighters who became one of the founding cells of the Rebel Alliance. Hera and Kanan were the foundation of the group, acting almost as the parents to the other members. Each member had their life destroyed by the Empire and was tired of doing nothing in the fight against tyranny.

Josh Duhamel will join the ensemble of the survival thriller “Not Without Hope,” an adaptation of Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman’s best-selling book that will be written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Also joining the cast are JoBeth Williams, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell and Marshall Cook.
As previously announced, Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) is starring in the film, which tells the real-life story of a tragic 2009 boating accident involving Schuyler, his friends Will Bleakley (Cook) and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrell). Levi will play Schuyler.
The search-and rescue-operation captivated national attention. Duhamel will portray U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close, who oversaw a crew that cut through the ocean to try to find the friends who went missing. Carnahan has some experience orchestrating survival tales, having previously directed “The Grey,” which found Liam Neeson battling very hungry wolves after a plane crash stranded his character in a snowy mountain range.

When it came to making their 10th studio album, Epik High had a clear goal in mind: stick with the honest themes of self-love, loneliness, and confidence that have made them one of South Korea’s most popular hip-hop acts since debuting in 2003. “Epik High has always been best at songs that are deeply emotional, songs for those dealing with demons within,” says Tablo, who founded the group with Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz. “We’ve dealt with so many of those demons ourselves, and what we want is for...
