The found footage types of movies haven’t been firing on all cylinders over the years, and Ratter is another one of them that has been lost to the archives, probably for good reason. Let’s be fair and say this: the idea was sound and the paranoia that can be created by this type of movie is real enough since the fact is that just about every device we use these days, from phones to laptops to security cameras, etc., are hooked up to a network that some folks can dip into whenever they want. The conceit behind Ratter is pretty straight forward and pulled directly from creepy headlines: the camera of a young woman's computer is hacked and her life monitored from afar, presumably by the cute-but-somewhat-creepy guy she meets at the library.

For his feature film debut, up-and-coming writer/director Branden Kramer utilizes the technology that surrounds us each and every day as not only the basis for his story but also with the way he presents his footage. Shot entirely Pov-style through iPhones, webcams and more, Ratter follows a newly relocated college student by the name of Emma (Ashley Benson) who begins to suspect someone is stalking her after a series of weird occurrences leaves her paranoid and unable to trust anyone.
Ratter is set to play at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival later this evening and in anticipation of its La premiere, Daily Dead recently chatted with Kramer about the origins behind his film, the challenges (and freedoms) of shooting the film non-traditionally and the importance of realism when telling a story such as this.

We're currently in a cinematic climate fearful of the power of the internet, but cyber-stalking in particular has been a popular flavor with filmmakers going all the back to "The Net," in which Sandra Bullock found out just how much of your life can be erased through the nefarious use of computers. Two decades later, it's not just computers where we can be compromised, but on our smartphones, too. And if you're a really determined bad guy (or any kind of governmental security agency) you can even log every keystroke, password, and communication from a targeted piece of digital equipment. That seems to be of particular fascination to writer/director Branden Kramer who has turned his short film "Webcam" into the feature length "Ratter," a stalking tale that purports to be told through the eye of the omnipresent but unseen hacker himself. "Spring Breakers" star Ashley Benson leads the film as Emma,...

It's not just Ashley Benson who is at risk. We all are. Based on the short film "Webcam," "Ratter" is a horror-thriller about a young woman, who, like her peers, is always "connected." Whether it's her phone or her laptop, Emma is always "on" -- making her an easy target for hackers using Rat (Remote Access Trojan), a type of malware that can be used to take control of a person's webcam and/or overall device. While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
