Jerusalem Film Festival’s industry sidebar, Pitch Point, has unveiled its selection of projects, including new works from Avishai Sivan, Shira Geffen (“Jellyfish”), Keren Yedaya (“My Treasure”), and Tawfik Abu Wael (“Atash”).
Among the 10 projects selected for Pitch Point is “Lot’s Wife,” Sivan’s follow-up to “Tikkun,” which won the top prize at the Jerusalem fest in 2015. Set up at Ronen Ben Tal at Plan b Productions, “Lot’s Wife” centers on a religious couple who, after 10 years of childlessness, has a child born with two heads, named Noah and Lot. Saying something is “like a David Lynch film” or calling something “Lynchian” is often not only lazy and cliche but also in many ways meaningless. When you have people calling films ranging from Alejandro Amenabar Open Your Eyes to Southland Tales as “Lynchian,” the descriptor not only loses much of its meaning but also becomes amorphous in a way that Lynch’s films absolutely are not.
But then there is a film like Tikkun. A hit on the festival circuit with runs at festivals ranging from Locarno to New Directors/New Films, this film comes from director Avishai Sivan and while it lacks the humor and energy of Lynch’s best work it owes a great deal aesthetically to the legendary wild-haired auteur.

Shot beautifully in black and white, Israeli artist and filmmaker Avishai Sivan's Tikkun tells a story about a young orthodox Jewish man, embodied astonishingly here by first time actor Aharon Traitel, slowly losing his faith after a near-death experience. With impressionistic visuals, Sivan paints nighttime Jerusalem as a Lynch-ian netherworld, shrouded in fog, where past and present exist side by side. The result is a hallucinatory tale of urban alienation, invoking the films of Antonioni. Haim-Aaron (Traitel) is a devout Yeshiva student, seen praying and fasting in the begining. Set in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem, Tikkun gives a unique glimpse into a highly reclusive world where tradition and religion dominate private lives. With its haunting imagery and thought provoking subject matter, Tikkun left me a lasting impression long after I left the theater. The Stockholm Xxvi Competition includes Marielle Heller’s Us title The Diary of a Teenage Girl and László Nemes’ Holocaust drama Son Of Saul.
It marks the first time Stockholm has a greater number of women than men competing for the Bronze Horse – the festival’s top prize.
The documentary competition includes Amy Berg’s An Open Secret, an investigation into accusations of teenagers being sexually abused within the film industry; and Cosima Spender’s Palio, centred on the annual horse race in Siena, Italy.

James Vanderbilt’s ‘Rathergate’ scandal drama starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford will open the 23rd annual event on October 8.
Topher Grace and Elisabeth Moss round out the key cast on the drama, based on journalist Mary Mapes’ account of the CBS report into former President George W Bush’s dereliction of duty while serving in the National Guard during the Vietnam War.
The government attempted to discredit the 2004 report, which led to the ruining of Rather’s career and the firing of Mapes.
Spc has positioned Truth for a potential awards run and will release it in theatres on October 16. The world premiere is set for Toronto in the Special Presentations strand.

The 68th Locarno International Film Festival wound to a close yesterday and offered its top prize to a Korean film for the first time, in what was a strong night overall for Asian features. Two years after picking up the Best Director (Silver Leopard) prize for Our Sunhi, Hong Sangsoo was awarded the Golden Leopard for his 17th film Right Now, Wrong Then (read Twitchfilm's review here). The film's star Jung Jae-young was also recognized with the Best Actor Prize from the Swiss Fest. Best Director went to Polish cineaste Andrzej Zulawski for Cosmos, his first film in 15 years, while the Special Jury Prize was won by Isreali filmmaker Avishai Sivan for Tikkun, which also received a special mention for its cinematography. Switzerland’s Locarno Film Fest wrapped Saturday with Korean director Hong Sang-soo taking home the Golden Leopard for his film Right Now, Wrong Then. The film’s star Jung Jae-Young also took the prize for best actor. Avishai Sivan’s drama Tikkun has won Best Israeli Feature at the 32nd Jerusalem Film Festival, which held its awards ceremony last night [July 16] and closes on Sunday.
Tikkun, which follows a committed Hassidic student who begins to doubt himself after a life-changing experience, won the Haggiag Award for Best Israeli Feature Film, which comes with a $31,500 (Ils 120,000) prize.
The film also won the Anat Pirchi Award for Best Script, which comes with a $2,600 (Ils 10,000) prize, the Haggiag Award for Best Actor for lead Khalifa Natour, also accompanied by a $2,600 (Ils 10,000) prize, and the Van Leer Award for Best Cinematography, which scoops $2,400 (Ils 9,000).
The film was directed by Avishai Sivan and produced by Ronen Ben-Tal, Avishai Sivan, Moshe Edery and Leon Edery of Plan B Productions.

The programme of Israeli films at the 35th Jerusalem Film Festival (July 9-19) has been revealed, including Feature and Documentary Film competitions.
The winner of the Haggiag Competition for Isreali Feature Films will take home the biggest prize in any Israeli film competition: $32,000 (120,000 Nis).
Prizes are also awarded for best first feature, actor, actress, cinematography, editing, screenplay, music and the audience choice award, as well as the Van Leer Competition for Israeli Documentary Films.
Other competitions include the International Spirit of Freedom competition and the Jewish Experience competition.
The festival will feature more than 200 Israeli and international films.
