Two animated children’s projects and two live-action series will share in $3.2 million of production funding from Screen Australia.
Northern Pictures’ Tom Weekly Versus… and Werner Film Productions’ Surviving Summer are being made for ViacomCBS and Netflix, respectively, while animation offerings 100% Wolf: The Book of Hath from Flying Bark Productions and Kangaroo Beach Summer Special from Cheeky Little Media will both appear on the ABC.
Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said the funding reflected Screen Australia’s commitment to supporting quality Australian screen stories for young audiences.

Fresh faces lead the cast of the ABC and Fremantle Australia’s children’s comedy-drama The Pm’s Daughter, now shooting in Canberra.
Cassandra Helmot will play Cat Parkes Pérez, a young activist whose relatively normal teen life is thrown into disarray when political turmoil strikes and her mother (Claire Fearon) is unexpectedly thrust into the role of Prime Minister.
Major disruptions begin to occur at Canberra landmarks – all seemingly designed to directly sabotage the Pm. Cat and her new friends, Sadie (Natalie English) and Ollie, set out to track down and unmask a rogue faction within a youth action group called Action Uprising. The clues will take them across every inch of the capital and lead them to investigate even their own schoolmates.
Nya Cofie (The Unlisted) and Amelie James-Power also star as Cat’s classmates Miro and Georgina, joining an adult cast of Anthony Brandon Wong (The Family Law...

The Australian screen industry is experiencing a boom, with Australia being seen as an affordable and safe place to film. This presents a distinct opportunity, not just for the Australian economy, but for modernising an industry ripe for change that can better meet the needs of contemporary audiences moving forward.
Although it is great to have all these international productions coming to Australia, we must also strive to protect Australian content and the unique value proposition that our productions bring to the global stage.
“The government is providing a whole lot of money for film and television at the moment but it’s principally for the Hollywood productions, and I welcome the jobs that come with that, but if they can pay for Hollywood stories to be told here, they can sure as hell make sure your stories are funded too,” Shadow Minister for the Arts Tony Burke told the...

Until there is diverse representation on stage and screen, not all Australians will feel acknowledged as a part of the society they live in, according Ursula Yovich.
The Burarra and Serbian actress, playwright, singer and songwriter delivered the inaugural Nida Naidoc Week Lecture yesterday, using her speech to call for cultural change that will lead to greater representation in the arts.
Yovich recounted that when she was young, she loved singing and religiously woke up at 6am each Saturday morning to watch ABC’s Rage.
And yet it wasn’t until she saw Whitney Houston for the first time that she ever imagined that a singing career was viable.
“I loved Tina Arena, John Farnham, Something for Kate, Crowded House, Wendy Matthews, Inxs, Australian Crawl, Midnight Oil and Icehouse. But I never felt that I could actually become a singer, because that career path was not for people like me.

The final season of Sbs’s The Family Law, the first series of ABC’s The Heights and the Sbs miniseries The Hunting have won the 10th annual Equity Ensemble Awards.
The actors who starred in these programs were voted the most outstanding Australian small screen ensembles in their respective categories by the Meaa Equity National Performers’ Committee (Npc).
Equity president Chloe Dallimore, who was among the 33 Npc members who selected this year’s finalists and winners, said: “I can’t think of a better way to spend lockdown than re-watching the incredible small screen performances of the last 12 months. What phenomenal talent we have in this country, both in front and behind the camera.
“It emphasised what’s at stake if we don’t continue to vigorously defend our local content quotas, and why we must continue to remind our government how the arts contribute to our Australian cultural identity.

Penny Smallacombe.
The Australian screen industry is on the “precipice of change” in giving more – and long overdue – recognition to Indigenous people and People of Colour creatives and stories, according to Penny Smallacombe.
As the head of Indigenous at Screen Australia, the Maramanindji woman who hails from the Northern Territory herself is an agent of change via a number of ongoing programs and upcoming new initiatives.
“This is both a scary and an exciting time,” she told Lowanna Grant in Media Ring’s The Yarning webinar. “There is a huge responsibility to do a large scale shift to bring more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders into the industry and provide more opportunities for People of Colour to tell their stories.
“I’m deeply saddened that it took the murder of George Floyd in order to be in a place where the industry is finally ready to listen to conversations about racism,...

Timothy Williams.
When Timothy Williams graduated from the Vca with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing in 2014, he set his sights on writing TV dramas.
After spending several years as a part-time scripted development assistant for Matchbox Pictures, he got his chance on the second season of the ABC’s The Heights, produced by Matchbox and For Pete’s Sake Productions’ Peta Astbury-Bulsara.
Williams joined the emerging writers’ room after being part of the observer program, which involved the participants writing scenes for the first season of the show co-created by Warren Clarke and Que Minh Luu.
The fact that he was born with Spina Bifida, a condition that affects the spinal cord and his mobility, made him well qualified to write scenes for Sabine, the character played by Bridie McKim, who has cerebral palsy.

Leon Ford in ‘The Letdown’ (Photo credit: Tony Mott).
Admirers of Leon Ford who enjoyed his work as Ruben in the ABC’s The Letdown and other shows should savour his performance in Jeremy Sims’ upcoming movie Rams because after that he will be off screen for a while.
The actor-writer moved to Los Angeles last year with his wife Alice Bell and their three young children as Alice serves as the writer/creator and co-showrunner on The Expatriates, a 10-part Amazon series produced by Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films.
Based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel, the series centres on a group of close-knit American women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong and is yet to go into production.
“I would like to find a happy medium that a lot people have where they can go and back forth and do jobs,” he tells If during a family vacation in Australia.

Sarah Lambert on the set of ‘Lambs of God.’
While Foxtel’s Lambs of God may well represent the pinnacle of Sarah Lambert’s 20-year career, the screenwriter/producer’s workload and reputation are set to reach new heights over the next two years.
The prolific Lambert is juggling four high-profile international TV series and two other projects. If they all get up, she may well have to clone herself.
First off, she has written the pilot of Traces, an 8-part drama based on a true crime case in Italy that has been transplanted to Australia. An examination of a miscarriage of justice, it’s being developed as a co-production between RevLover Films’ Martha Coleman and Lauren Edwards and Porchlight Films’ Vincent Sheehan and Liz Watts.
Currently she is tackling the pilot for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (working title) for Made Up Stories’ Bruna Papandrea, Jodi Matterson and Steve Hutensky.

Sam Cotton in ‘Diary of an Uber Driver.’
When Sam Cotton landed the title role in the ABC/RevLover Films’ dramedy Diary of an Uber Driver, he approached the job with some trepidation.
It was his first lead after playing Bruce, the nemesis of Luke McGregor’s Daniel in the ABC’s Rosehaven, and son-in-law Wayne in Sbs’s The Family Law.
He plays Uber driver Ben, whose life had always been in cruise control until his newish girlfriend Beck (Zahra Newman) gets pregnant in the six-parter scripted by Tom Ward, based on Ben Phillips’ blog.
He got the gig after doing a self-tape when he lived in Brisbane (he is now based in Sydney), followed by a call back in Sydney a few weeks later.
“At the outset I was kind of terrified but the director Matt Moore did so much to make me comfortable,” he tells If. “He...

Hugo Weaving and Jillian Nguyen in ‘Loveland’.
Jillian Nguyen landed her first screen role – as Molly Kane in Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang – just two weeks after graduating from 16th Street Actors Studio in Melbourne last year.
Since then her career has rocketed as she played the lead in Ivan Sen’s romantic sci-fi drama Loveland followed by a key supporting role in Hungry Ghosts, Matchbox Pictures’ genre-bending 4-parter for Sbs directed by Shawn Seet.
There was one speed bump after Kurzel’s film wrapped: She was so depressed she got fired from her retail job. It’s unlikely she will have to go back to such work, as Seet says: “I was blown away by Jillian. She is a real, natural talent.”
Stephen Corvini, who produced Hungry Ghosts with Timothy Hobart, tells If: “She is a superstar in the making. On the screen her energy crackles and pops.

(L-r) Peta Astbury-Bulsara, Que Minh Luu and Warren Clarke (Photo credit: Bohdan Warchomij).
The ABC had greenlit the development of The Heights when Que Minh Luu, who co-created the drama serial with Warren Clarke, was alerted to a job vacancy at the public broadcaster.
Sally Riley, the ABC’s head of drama, comedy and Indigenous, suggested Luu apply for the role of an executive producer.
That presented a dilemma for the Matchbox Pictures development executive. “On one hand I was keen to see the show through to completion,” she tells If. “On the other hand I wanted to get into producing, jobs like that are rare and I may not have had the opportunity again.”
So she applied, got the position and continued to oversee the 30-episode production from Matchbox and Peta Astbury-Bulsara’s For Pete’s Sake Productions as an Ep.

Alastair McKinnon.
A generational change is sweeping through Matchbox Pictures as the NBCUniversal-owned production company develops a raft of projects with emerging writers and producers.
“Talent development has always been a priority for Matchbox,” says Alastair McKinnon, who started as MD last December after three years with the ABC, most recently as head of content investment and planning,
McKinnon signed on just as the company founded by Penny Chapman, Tony Ayres, Helen Bowden, Michael McMahon and Helen Panckhurst was celebrating its 10th anniversary. “That was the perfect time to reflect and think about what Matchbox has done incredibly successfully over that time as the leading drama production company in Australia,” he tells If in his first interview since taking charge.
“But the industry has transformed in that 10 years and is unrecognisable if you think about the sorts of shows, how they are financed and the distribution models of drama.

Nikki Barrett and Anousha Zarkesh won multiple prizes at the Casting Guild of Australia Awards presented last Friday in Melbourne.

Zarkesh took home the awards for Princess Pictures’ Wrong Kind of Black (best achievement in casting) and Scarlett Pictures’ Black Comedy series 3 (TV comedy).
“We had a lucky year in that all three of these projects were very collaborative casting processes with the filmmakers actively engaged in trying to find something true to the world they were creating. It’s always the best kind of casting to be involved in and shows on screen,” Barrett tells If.
