As music-hall star Elizabeth Cree awaits her sentence for the death of her husband John, Inspector Kildare suspects he may have died by the hand of the serial killer responsible for the series of murders that has shaken Victorian London.
Though only appearing in the movie briefly, philosopher Karl Marx was indeed living in London at the time the movie is set. Because he was a Jew and propounded socialist ideas, he was actually harassed by the police.

The great Dan Leno first appeared on stage in 1884 - so he became popular in the late 1880s and 1890s. Karl Marx died in 1883, one year before Dan Leno first took to the stage. There could be no point in time when someone could meet both Karl Marx and a successful, popular Dan Leno.
