Europe’s emerging upscale movie animation power, Spain, saw eight titles selected for March’s Cartoon Movie meet, trailing only France. Meanwhile, Spaniard Alberto Mielgo won an Academy Award for his animated short film “The Windshield Wiper.”
Spain’s animation industry generated revenues of over 950 million in 2021, according to Spanish trade promotion board Icex.
Growing a dedicated animation film fund, Catalonia looks set to grab an ever-larger piece of this action. September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

In her 1965 essay “The Imagination of Disaster,” Susan Sontag wrote that the allure of “exotic dangerous situations” came down to the way they “normalize what is psychologically unbearable.” It would have been intriguing to get Sontag’s take on “The Unthinkable,” , and doesn’t so much delight in world-ending events as it recognizes that surviving them never ensures a happy ending. Getting through the ordeal is only half the battle.
But what a battle: In this fast-paced adventure from Swedish director Victor Danell, an unsuspecting public contends with toxic rain that renders its victims into puddles of dementia who slam their cars into epic pileups as a mystery international threat invades from the skies. Like Jeremy Saulnier’s “Green Room,” the movie oscillates from stark survival drama to outright war movie and back again, speeding through taut, claustrophobic shootouts and exploding helicopters even as it shoehorns the spectacle into a...

If there were Oscars for chutzpah, “The Unthinkable” would be a cinch: The first feature for a Swedish collective who’ve been making short films together since childhood, it manages a sprawling story with considerable spectacular action to technically commanding effect on a relatively miniscule, partly Kickstarter-funded budget.
Yet Crazy Pictures’ disaster movie/thriller/romance/dysfunctional family drama is more laudable for its ambitious resourcefulness on limited means than for actual achievement or impact. Despite some strikingly accomplished elements, the awkward whole never quite gels, sewn-together parts from “Red Dawn,” “Independence Day,” et al., failing to cohere amid major logic gaps, not to mention lead characters more off-putting than interesting.
At once impressive and misconceived, this is truly an odd duck whose ungainliness may explain why the U.S. took so long to catch up with a film that’s launched in numerous other territories since its 2018 home-turf premiere.

"We never thought it would happen to us." Three years later, and they still didn't think it would happen! Ha. Magnolia Pictures has debuted a new US trailer for the US release of the Swedish disaster-thriller titled The Unthinkable. This originally premiered in Sweden back in 2018, and we featured a trailer years ago, but it's only now showing up in the US three years later. It's midsummer and Sweden wakes up to a state of emergency. All the networks are down, and before anyone realizes what's behind the collapse, a series of unexplained attacks take place around the country. Alex returns to his childhood village, and as old feelings come back to the surface, more mysterious attacks plunge Sweden into chaos & confusion. The Unthinkable is "about time running out, and protecting what matters most." Starring Christoffer Nordenrot, Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, and Magnus Sundberg. No idea why this...

A new trailer has been released to celebrate the occasion, which you can watch below. The film enjoyed its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in 2018, which is where I saw, and loved it: "When the audacious action finally kicks off, it's handled extremely well and shown to usually awful and sometimes shocking effect, primarily because of all the time spent constructing a strong foundation. It becomes a gripping and incredibly impressive affair, especially in view of the modest budget." Here's the official synopsis from the good folks at Magnet Releasing: "It's midsummer and Sweden...

The film stars Christoffer Nordenrot, Lisa Henni, Jesper Barkselius, Pia Halvorsen, and Magnus Sundberg.
