  • Well, from this 2021 family comedy movie's cover, I must admit that I was expecting quite some more from writers Brandon Burrows, Casey DeVargas and Jason Gruich.

However, this movie wasn't really worth writing home about. Sure, it was watchable, but it wasn't a particularly memorable or enjoyable movie, at least not for me. And even my 11 year old son quickly lost interest in the movie.

Why? Well, because the storyline was just all over the place. The majority of the movie was sort of a family movie with a slight Christmas theme to it, but without really having much of any Christmas feel really. And then director Alex Merkin took the movie into the "Home Alone" territory with the last 35 minutes of the movie. Made for a very strange combination. Especially since the "Home Alone" aspect was with dogs that were capable of setting traps and trick humans.

It should be said, though, that "Pups Alone" does have a good enough cast and voice cast ensemble, with the likes of on screen performances by Keith David, Dolph Lundgren, Nicholas Turturro and Eric Roberts, as well as the voices of Rob Schneider, Malcolm McDowell, Danny Trejo and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

But even with such names on the cast list, the movie didn't really fare all that well, given its chaotic and disorganized storyline and the fact that the movie felt like a random mess.

I managed to sit through the entire ordeal, but I wasn't particularly entertained. And "Pups Alone" is definitely not going to be a movie that I will be returning to watch a second time, nor is it anywhere near being a Christmas classic.

My rating of "Pups Alone" lands on a generous three out of ten stars, as it failed to pick a proper genre and stick with it, and also failed to have any convincing Christmas feel to it.
  • I heard about PUPS ALONE for almost all this year despite I knew that it was going to be released straight online because of the cast and the poster. After all, a talking dog movie could be perfect for Christmas right? Let's see.

It begins with an animated prologue narrated by Charlie the dog (voiced by Jerry O'Connell) that explains the situation of our lead Robert, a talented inventor that moves with his daughter in a new neighborhood before Christmas. Once there when he picks the boxes from the car he is targeted by his neighbor Victor (Dolph Lundgren), another inventor with an aggressive bulldog named Vinnie P (voiced by Danny Trejo) that despite becomes friends with Charlie has an army of dogs that follow him outdoors. At first Victor seems nice and good natured, but gradually as we are introduced to his goons we find out that he wants to steal Robert's new inventions. He will succedd at first, but only to have his plans foiled by Vinnie P's dogs after Vinnie had a change of heart in an HOME ALONE fashion.

I really wanted to like PUPS ALONE, but as the movie progressed it went downhill and especially in the last 40 minutes it took a detour to Stupidville... making it like a HOME ALONE film and CATS AND DOGS put together! It was a bit cringy seeing Dolph Lundgren in such a movie as he is mostly known for action fare including his collaborations with Sly Stallone, while respected B-movie stars Keith David and Eric Roberts (a bartender and a fun loving CEO respectively) were good even tho they had small roles, and I honestly think that if they had more scenes it probably would have worked better. The dogs were actually cute to look at, even tho some of their final gags fell flat for 90% of the time.

I won't recommend PUPS ALONE to adults as most of the humour in the second part seemed very gratuitous and immature, and not even to small kids as most of the jokes are mostly for adults. Only of interest for folks who love to see once beloved actors humiliating themselves.
  • It's bad. It's really bad. Young kids will probably cope, but my 6 year old was quite bored.

The acting is just atrocious with stunted looks from the actors absolutely everywhere, made all the worse by drawing it out to almost 2 hours.
  • Just another holiday movie for children but watched it anyhow. As expected a simple plot with "whispering" dogs. The runtime of 107 minutes is a bit too long but hey, it´s a holiday movie. The cast is impressive but again as expected the acting the opposite. But I have to admit I loved to see Dolph Lundgren (Victor) enjoying his Cuban cigar. A nice change with Christmas coming.

I thought the new home alone was terrible, this makes it look like the original!! I lasted about an hour with my 8 year old and even she said switch it off.

A waste of time and typical pandemic movie!!!

This was horrific. I don't understand how movies this terrible are made, it baffles me. My 7 year old thought it was alright, so maybe put it on for a little kid and leave the room. For your own sanity.
  • My god you can practically see their souls trying to escape their bodies in their scenes... My young girls liked it but I was half expecting those two to pull out an MG42 each and have a flashback to that terrible Stallone film.
  • Both Antagonist and Protagonist are retarded, all their decisions are illogical, it is not "a film for children", it is just poor parody on "Home Alone". I don't recommend anybody to watch it.
  • I was here for a cheesy knock off of home alone and i got it its absolute garbage. Its so bad that it was almost good its makes the cats movie look normal but theres dogs put it on for kids around 4-8 and its a good movie but dont watch and expect it to be good but its a good movie for kids unless your kids have any sense of whats happening.
  • I don't know how they got so many known actors to play in such a bad movie. I guess Hollywood is hard up for money since the pandemic they will literally take on any role for a buck. The story is hard to follow and many scenes do not make any sense. Absolute doggy dookie!
  • My kids and I absolutely adored this film. So funny, and with genuine heart. It's clear how much fun the entire team and cast had on set and the dogs were just amazing. The cast is outstanding! I was expecting it to just be a little Home Alone knockoff with dogs from the title and obvious similarities in places but honestly this film completely has its own charm. It has a throwback feel to many of my favorite 80s comedies and balances the slapstick humor with charming characters and beautiful emotional moments. I could not be happier or more surprised.

After watching this movie I was surprised by some of the reviews until I did the math and realized they were written about a week before the film even came out so I doubt they even saw the movie before they wrote them.

Highly recommended fun for the entire family.
  • That said, I actually enjoyed this movie a lot. It's a cross between Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Home Alone.

As far as Malcolm McDowell movies go, this was far superior to Timecrafters: Treasure Of The Pirates Cove, which came out the same time. That's largely because this movie, outside of veteran actor Malcolm McDowell, has a far better cast. Pups Alone certainly far more solid household names, than Timecrafters: Treasure Of The Pirates Cove.

A widower that's an inventor named Robert, played by relative newcomer Tyler Hollingsworth and his estranged daughter Jenna, played by newcomer Isidora Swann move to a new high affluent town in the Rocky Mountains (Colorado or Utah). They go on a Christmas vacation to a nearby ski resort. Their short fused neighbor Victor, played by veteran actor Dolph Lundgren and their CEO boss Bill, played by veteran actor Eric Roberts, go with them.

When Victor learns of Robert's new invention, he hires two foolish thieves named Benny, played by veteran actor Nicholas Turturro and Lenny, played by relative newcomer Stelio Savante. Victor communicates with through cell phones, to try and steal it.

The dogs, lead by Gidget, voiced by veteran actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, and her new love interest Charlie, voiced by veteran actor Jerry O'Connell, work together to try to thwart the thieves.

Rounding out the household names in this movie are veteran actors Keith David (in a cameo), Rob Schneider and Danny Trejo. The latter two each voice one of the dogs, as does Malcolm McDowell.

This is a good movie for people of any age to enjoy at Christmas time, despite a little bit crude humor, which may offend some people of any age. Only if you like the cast, especially Jennifer Love Hewitt, Dolph Lundgren, Malcolm McDowell and Jerry O'Connell, should you give this a try.
  • Language and way too much negativity We kept watching for it to get better.

I'm sorry I wasted money on it! I'm glad I don't children who were watching it.

    Very disappointed!!

No intelligence went into making this movie at all.the characters must have an IQ of 10 to get outwitted by a bunch of dogs not even funny in a silly way.
  • Will not surprise me when the Raspberry Awards come around and it wins them all. The dogs are the only part of this movie that isn't annoying. Their cuteness accounts for my three stars.
  • This film's title is just as similar to Home Alone's enough to be a total ripoff of that film. The storyline is also terrible and the special effects are dull!!! This film is also ranked the worst in my 5 worst films that I would not watch, even ever again!
  • Funny and kind movie to watch with family. The movie is touching and funny, suitable for both kids and adults. We enjoyed it and added to our "Christmas movies" list.

Cheesy holiday film but entertained the kids and engaging enough for me to stay awake

    Dolph lundgren steals the show.

    Danny Trejo most recognisable voice

Even a cameo from Eric Robert's.
